Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

"Extra scoring".

Jul-03-09  Jim Bartle: Holy mackerel!

I once went to an extra-inning game at the Oakland Coliseum. Had to leave after 12 because BART (rapid transit) shut down at midnight. Would have missed some fireworks at this game!

Jul-03-09  Jim Bartle: My mistake. This was a day game. No surprise, as you just can't score 12 runs at night in Oakland. The air gets so heavy fly balls just stop and drop to the ground.

Okay, enough about the current NBA free throw percentages...

Jul-03-09  playground player: Anybody got any video of that swarm of bees delaying the Astros' game yesterday? I saw a still photo of an usher trying to shoo away a whole cloud of bees. Obviously suicidal, in a rather exotic way.

Phony Benoni: <playground player> There's a brief segment near the end of this, if the link works:

http://houston.astros.mlb.com/media...

Jul-03-09  Jim Bartle: Anybody else thinking what I'm thinking?

That those were the ghosts of the Astros' Killer B's making a visit?

Jul-03-09  Jim Bartle: Curse you, PB, for linking to mlb.com videos, which I had not been aware of. Now I'll NEVER get any work done.

Check out this one of the Yankees for "homer" announcers. Most bored call of home run ever:

http://mlb.mlb.com/media/video.jsp?...

I guess the replay for home run calls has its merits, but the sight of the umps running off the field to look at video is ludicrous.

Phony Benoni: You never head Bob Scheffing.

He was the Tigers' manager in the unespectedly good year of 1961, but the good days didn't last and he got moved to the broadcast booth. Unfortunately, Scheffing <never> got excited, and delivered every sentence in an emotionless monotone.

Here's Scheffing calling Bobby Thomson's home run:

"There's a long drive to left.
<PAUSE>
"The Giants win the pennant.
<PAUSE>
"We'll be back after this word from our sponsor."

Now, imagine that toned down a couple of notches, and you have Scheffing.

Jul-03-09  Jim Bartle: I certainly remember Scheffing as a manager, but never knew he was an announcer.

Vin Scully is low key, but still transmits the drama, and he's not a homer. I think he's hitting his stride these days.

Take a look at this video of two shots at Mark Texeira: http://mlb.mlb.com/media/video.jsp?...

Hits or errors? I go clearly for hits on both. Plays look so much easier on TV (or computer screen)?

Phony Benoni: Ah! I see. Thanks.

The second one, definitely a hit. Bad hops, especiallly on hard hit balls, are rarely the fielder's fault. I really think he should have had the first one, though.

Phony Benoni: Maglie and Dale Mitchell would learn something about no-hitters just a couple of weeks later.
Jul-03-09  Jim Bartle: Hadn't thought of that, but you're right. How about Harvey Haddix pinch-hitting for Philadelphia? I hear he pitched a pretty good game a couple of years later, against the Braves of all teams.

Phony Benoni: No doubt about this one.

<Game of the Day> July 4, 1985

http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/...

"What I did on my summer vacation."

Jul-04-09  Jim Bartle: There's a a reason they called it the Launching Pad. Heck of a lineup the Mets had then, at least against righties (when Dykstra and Backman led off).
Jul-04-09  A.G. Argent: Jim Bartle, talk about a launching pad; your Giants flexed some muscle last night. As well as getting the Major League leading 10th shutout. Don't look now but they have the second best record in the NL. What games they got left in the 2nd half with the enemy Dodgers down south will be fun to watch. And the Rockies have shot their bolt, I'm sure. They'll fade hard after the break. ( New acronym; FLW, as in *famous last words*)
Jul-04-09  Jim Bartle: Thanks, AG, I missed that, being all wrapped up Federers, Roddicks and Murrays.

I do not believe the Giants are a contending team, but it would be great if they ended with 85 wins or so. They do have a good pitching staff, and their bad-luck pitcher from last year, Matt Cain, keeps getting wins.

I wouldn't worry about the Cards too much. They'll get it going as soon as Pujols starts hitting.

Jul-05-09
Premium Chessgames Member
Phony Benoni: You think that was bad--take a look at this:

http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/...

16 baserunners (11 hits including 5 doubles, 3 walks, 1 error, 1 HBP), 16 left on base.

Phony Benoni: And here's the all-time record for one team in a nine-inning game: <20>

http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/...

That seems almost impossible.
