Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

   Jun-06-22 W Adams vs M Kagan, 1947

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

Apr-02-15  Jim Bartle: Ronn Reynolds:

<Christensen bats righthanded. As he stepped around the plate he nodded to Ronn Reynolds, the stocky reserve catcher who has been with the Met organization since 1980. Reynolds whispered up to him from his crouch, "Kid, you won't believe what you're about to see.">

Apr-02-15  Jim Bartle: Yeah, but yours suffers in comparison because it actually happened.
Apr-03-15  Jim Bartle: I hate this sportswriter custom of stringing different stats together to proclaim a player or team is something special.

<After all, last year, the Nats’ starting staff joined the 2011 Phillies’ as the only ones in baseball history with four times as many strikeouts as walks in at least 1,000 innings>

That's far from the worst example, but it's still irritating.

  WannaBe: To NCAA:

Please, please, please, stop, stop! Do I wanna see a stadium 10% full for a weekday game held at Little Rock Arkansas? Or a Bowl held at Bahamas that had 500 people in the stands?

http://espn.go.com/college-football...

Apr-03-15  Jim Bartle: In the mid-60s there were nine bowl games: the 4 New Years games, and the Gatorr, Liberty, Bluebonnet, Sun and Tangerine Bowls. I think only one team from a conference .
Apr-03-15  Jim Bartle: To kick off baseball season, a famous Giants game: http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/...

I wonder exactly what happened in the Giants' third. Looks like Phils catcher threw the ball into center as Mays stile, but what kind of rundown was that?

Apr-03-15  Jim Bartle: Mays "stole."

Apr-04-15  Jim Bartle: Gibson thre a shutout in his first start and McCovey got four hits in his debut on the same day?

Note the Giants had high hopes for McCovey from the start. They moved Mays up to second to have McCovey hit third, in his first game.

Phony Benoni: <JB> My thought exactly. Wonder if the umpire used to work in Atlanta.

Not to be pessimistic, but how much of that strain can an arm stand?

WannaBe: I think them Ump's arm are quite good.
Apr-04-15  Jim Bartle: I think a lot of pitchers have that much break on their curves. But they don't throw them nearly as hard.

The screwball is a great pitch, but few pitchers throw it because it wrecks the arm. Same with the American twist serve in tennis: a great weapon, but destroys the elbow.

Phony Benoni: Do you notice that, when your arms hang relaxed at your side, the palm faces backwards? When Carl Hubbell, (the great left-handed screwball specialist) did that, his left palm faced forwards.

  WannaBe: Dumb question...

On/At the very top level of baseball play, the delivery of the ball is/usually the same, else the batter will know what kind of pitch is coming. (But usually not the location)

Hence, is the difference of a curve vs screwy (Hello Fernando V.!) vs knuckleball the action of the wrist, or the elbow or the shoulder?

Apr-04-15  Jim Bartle: The grip and the wrist mainly, but I guess the elbow on screwballs and the like.

WannaBe: Well, this could be a fine how-do-you-do...

If this current Wisconsin-Kentucky score keeps up, we will have:

Aaron Rogers, attended Cal rooting for Wisconsin.

Tony Romo, born in California, attended high school in Wisconsin, went to college in the state of Illinois.

Twitter world will explode with crappy comments on 'loyalty' to State and College and everything else in-between.

Me, I'm just rootin' for Ms. Judd. Good ol' male hormone. (Watch as this comment come back to haunt me in 2020 when I run for president...)

Phony Benoni: Apprehension rather than anticipation in these parts. Every indication is that this will be one of those years with a lot of 7-6 games, and the closer will likely have more decisions than saves.
Apr-06-15  Shams: <Jim Bartle> <Same with the American twist serve in tennis: a great weapon, but destroys the elbow.>

I don't know the serve you speak of, but can players safely learn it, lightly practice it and use it in key spots only without ruining their arm?
