| Apr-16-15 | | Jim Bartle: Reshevsky must be a huge bridge to a low Morphy number for many players. |

|
| Apr-17-15 | | waustad: FYI, both of our pages here have been mentioned as places to talk about baseball. I'm good with it, up to a point. |

 | | WannaBe: <waustad> We respect the host of this page, and we tend to discuss historical sporting events, I tend to post funny or weird sporting links (see my illegal horse down field) Otherwise, we are all good here. =)) |

 | | WannaBe: Truly useless information, from (as always) J. Stark of ESPN. =) Trevor Bauer have already thrown a nine-inning no-hitter. http://espn.go.com/blog/jayson-star... |
|
| Apr-18-15 | | Jim Bartle: So many of the young ambitious sportswriters (hello, grantland) try too hard to find ever more esoteric stats, just to show off, and are boring. But Stark knows how to do it. He uses stats to make interesting points and is always entertaining. And he doesn't show off. |
|
| Apr-18-15 | | Jim Bartle: There's a documentary called "Fastball" coming out, sounds great. The director talked about Dalkowski. I didn't know he was about to make the majors after blowing away Dodgers and Yankees in spring training. Then he hurt his shoulder fielding a bunt by Phil Linz and it was all over. Wush there was film. He also said Yankee draftee Brian Taylor could throw welover 100 with no effort, was the next Gooden. Then he hurt his shoulder in a fight. Goodbye, career. |
|
| Apr-18-15 | | playground player: <Jim Bartle> Ah, yes--Brian Taylor! I do remember that. Yankees sign him to fabulous contract before he ever throws one pitch in a real game, his mother takes time off from her job at the crab meat-packing plant to demand even more money--and the stupid kid gets involved in a rock-fight with some other teenagers and blows out his arm. Contrast with Orel Hershiser, who took just about forever to develop. |
|
| Apr-18-15 | | Jim Bartle: I don't know that it's that simple. He fought for more money, his right, and his mother helped him. I like to see great pitchers become great, whether on my team or not. Taylor, stupidly didn't protect himself. Kerry Wood, pitched both ends of high school doubleheaders. Gooden, drugs and drinking. Canseco, threw his shoulder out in first appearance. Reds in 70s: Gullett, Nolan, Simpson. Dalkowski was apparently just dumb. Weaver figured it out and just kept it really simple, and Dalkowski got some control. |

 | | perfidious: <waustad: FYI, both of our pages here have been mentioned as places to talk about baseball....> No problem over in my neck of the woods, either, come to baseball. Or anything else, for that matter; the only thing is that I have tended not to post there very often. Still and all, anyone is welcome to come by--might e'en prod me to drop in there more than hitherto! |
|
| Apr-19-15 | | Jim Bartle: Here's the sort of manufactured stat which irritates me: <35 points & 5 rebounds in playoff debut all-time: Wilt Chamberlain, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Julius Erving...Anthony Davis (via @EliasSports)> What does "5 rebounds" mean. Not a big number. Seems it just keeps other players out to make Davis look more impressive. |
|
| Apr-19-15 | | Jim Bartle: Found the first reason for "5 rebounds":
Chris Paul 2008, 35 points, 10 assists.
But only three rebounds.
I'll bet there are others. |

 | | WannaBe: File this under "Appropo Names"
Anaheim Ducks have a player last name Fowler. And I remember a player for Univ of Oregon last name Mallard. Prince Fielder is a nice one. Since he plays first base. Too bad, he doesn't play for Kansas City. It'd be a 'double'. And LA Kings had a player last name, King. =)
Can anyone come up with more Appropo Names? |

 | | perfidious: <Jim....Then (Steve Dalkowski) hurt his shoulder fielding a bunt by Phil Linz and it was all over. Wush there was film.> Phil Linz, aka Mr Harmonica Man.
Jes' ask Yogi 'bout thet. |
|
| Apr-19-15 | | Jim Bartle: Horace Speed never stole a base. Vic Power was a singles hitter. |
|
| Apr-19-15 | | playground player: <WannaBe> If Jason Kidd had played basketball for the Seton Hall Pirates; if Rudy Arias had pitched for the New York Mets, and Bob Veale for the Nippon Ham Fighters; if Roman Gabriel had played baseball instead of football, and played for the California Angels... |

Apr-19-15
 | | Phony Benoni: Speaking of Phil Linz and appropriateness, don't forget he was an utility player. Back in the early 1970s, the Tiger's second baseman was Tony Taylor. Especially appropriate in the state where Kellogg's is based. |
|
| Apr-19-15 | | Jim Bartle: Then there was van Lingle Mungo:

 | | Phony Benoni: I've held off bringing up the Tigers so far, but I want to show you this play. It's not unbelievably spectacular, but what amazes me about Iglesias is the speed with which he gets rid of the ball. http://m.mlb.com/video/v81777783/ny... |
|
| Apr-20-15 | | Jim Bartle: Great play.
Looked at this other one. At first I wondered why the centerfielder was loafing. Then I realized it was bases loaded, one out, tie game, bottom of the ninth. Didn't matter if he caught it or not. http://m.mlb.com/video/v82073183/cl... |
|
Apr-21-15
 | | Phony Benoni: I don't like giving up by not even trying to catch the ball. Million-to-one shot, maybe, but players have been known to leave third base early. If everybody had just kept running, could the batter have gotten credit for an inside-the-park home run? |
