Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

Jul-14-09  Travis Bickle: The NL ought to slaughter the AL tonight with The Cubs Lily starting the Allstar Game. ; P

Phony Benoni: <Travis Bickle> In the first place, Lilly isn't starting.

In the second place, the starting pitcher doesn't mean that much. Rmember that game in 1934, where Carl Hubbell struck out five in a row in the first and second innings? The NL still lost that game.

Jul-14-09  Travis Bickle: <Phony Benoni> I disagree Phony even if you are a great baseball historian. Pitching is 75% of the game, example if a hitter gets 3 hits out of 10 at bats thats a very good batting average. They better bring Lily in and let him pitch the rest of this game!

Phony Benoni: Speaking of All-Star pitchers--anyone want to guess what was the last time a pitcher batted in an All-Star game?
Jul-14-09  Travis Bickle: <Phony Benoni> I hope you know I was just kidding you about Lily pitching the last 8 innnings LOL.
Jul-14-09  Travis Bickle: I dont know who it was but it must've been an extra inning game and they were out of players.
Jul-14-09  Jim Bartle: It had to be in the tie a few years ago. Of course if Carlos Zambrano were on the team they could send him up to pinch hit in good conscience.

Phony Benoni: Nope. In fact it was in the first inning!

Back in 2004, the AL scored six runs in the top of the first, They got down to the pitcher's spot, and Mark Mulder, who hadn't yet thrown a pitch, went ahead and batted.

Phony Benoni: Hmmm. You're batting against Roger Clemens, who has already given up six runs in the inning.

I wouldn't be surprised if there was a little bailing out going on.

  tpstar: <Phony Benoni> Hello David,

The next magazine is a tribute issue to V.E. Vandenburg. I have the August 1983 issue with a nice newspaper clipping, and the August 1984 issue with the Port Huron Open where he went 3.5/5 but no gamescores. So far I haven't found any of his games, although I was told he didn't like to publish his own. Do you have any Vandenburg games which I could annotate for this issue or even use in a tactics set? I appreciate any help - thanks a lot.

P.S. Those old chess cartoons in the 80s issues are a scream. ;>D

Jul-15-09  suenteus po 147: <Phony Benoni> Well, I've made some actual progress today! After getting the 1989 USSR championship squared away, I emailed PGN for 1931, 1937, and 1940. And I submitted the missing games for 1944 via the PGN Upload Utility so they should be up soon. Next is 1945 and 1949!

Phony Benoni: HBO? Is that on television?
Jul-15-09  Jim Bartle: Hope it's not narrated by his head.
Jul-16-09  Benzol: Thanks for the heads up on those two tournaments Dave. The Zonal Tournament of Seven in 1964 was important and was a category 15 tournament if I remember correctly. As Peter points out it was probably stronger than many of the interzonals.

:)

Jul-16-09  A.G. Argent: <TB> Would that I could afford HBO. I'm a mostly unemployed house painter. In the middle of the summer.

Introduced by Amy Klobuchar as "the only member of the panel to have thrown a perfect game."

Sam Horn gets a whiff of history.

Jul-17-09  Jim Bartle: More than a whiff. Got to admire him for keeping his head straight and hitting a double in his seventh at bat, though.

One thing I find curious about these boxscores (AL ones) is why the pitchers are listed in the batting stats. They're not part of the lineup...

Phony Benoni: I suspect because of the fielding statistics.
