Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

Jul-17-09  suenteus po 147: <Phony Benoni> I've been working today, putting together the 1945 USSR Championship, when I came across this discrepancy: You have Tolush listed as a bye for rounds 5 AND 6, and the game B Ratner vs P Romanovsky, 1945 is duplicated in rounds 1 and 6. Not sure what caused the error, but I'm afraid that it might throw off the whole game sequence. You can review the posts on my chessforum here: http://www.chessgames.com/perl/ches...

In the meantime, I'll jump ahead to the 1949 USSR Championship and make sure there are no discrepancies. I apologize if this creates a lot of extra work. I do appreciate all the work you put into rebuilding these tournaments for the collection!

Jul-17-09  playground player: <Phony Benoni> I've posted one of my better Polish Opening games on my forum, and would appreciate your comments on it. My opponent had twice as many wins as I, a higher winning percentage, and a much higher (Pogo) rating. I also made a few errors in the middle game that cost me a couple of pawns--but I did go on to win, and I believe the game shows some of the strengths of this not-very-highly-respected opening.

Any and all kibitzers are welcome. Always looking to improve my game!

Jul-17-09  playground player: <Phony Benoni> Thanks for your comments. I'll be taking a much closer look at them later. Meanwhile, as I've said before, it often seems that good players play badly against this opening--while weak or inexperienced players don't seem to be fazed by it at all.

Jul-18-09  suenteus po 147: <Phony Benoni> Thanks for checking through all the games again, David. I thought there might have been an error because the word "bye" is hyphenated next to Tolush's name twice, and in every other instance (when the player was supposed to play Flohr) the was no "bye" next to the game so I assumed it was an error and not a typo :) I should finish 1949 tomorrow, and if I have time I'll squeeze in 1945 now that it's hunky-dory. Not sure when I will get to '62, '65, '69, and '72, but it will be soon. It looks like all the games are present for '65 and '72, but the other two will need uploads for sure.

Double your pleasure

Jul-19-09  Jim Bartle: A dramatic game I saw from the rightfield stands at
Candlestick: http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/...

First of a three-game series vs. LA, final weekend of the 82 season. SF and LA tied for second, one game behind Atlanta.

Breining pitched well for the Giants before loading the bases in the 8th. Robinson visited the mound, and all of us were screaming to take Breining out. (Today I'm sure any manager would--different strategies.) He didn't, and sure enough second pitch, Rick Monday drilled one into the seats below us.

Reuss geared up and mowed the Giants down in the 8th and 9th, the model of a clutch pitcher. Giants pennant chances pretty much over...

Phony Benoni: Definitely an Old School decision.

Some pennant race. Was it much consolation when the Giants ruined the Dodgers' chances on Sunday?

Jul-19-09  Dredge Rivers: <playground player> <You wouldn't be Keith Olbermann here incognito, would you?>

That's right, <pp>, I wouldn't! I'm just a reasonably intelligent and observant guy. Unlike George W. Bush, I might add!

Now, why dontcha head back to the playground? Us grown-ups are doing something important, i.e. saving the country!

Jul-19-09  Jim Bartle: PB: Oh yes!! The Joe Morgan homer to keep the Dodgers out of a playoff was cause for celebration in the Bay Area. Caused some friction with my college roommate, an LA fan.

Plus on the Saturday in between, our group went to the Washington-Stanford football game. Huskies were undefeated and ranked #1, but Elway just blew them off the field, and ended up on the cover of SI.

Phony Benoni: Ah, that explains <The Play> in the Stanford-Cal game later that year. The SI Cover Jinx!
Jul-19-09  Jim Bartle: The Play?? Can you be more specific?
Jul-19-09

Phony Benoni: Do I need to be more specific than saying it was a Stanford-Cal game and Gary Tyrell was involved? Well, OK:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7aCD...

Jul-19-09  Jim Bartle: Ooh, that play...I'd erased it from my memory.

The game was at Berkeley that year, so I didn't go. And it wasn't on TV. Listening, I couldn't believe it.

For some reason, Stanford spent the first three quarters running the ball, despite having Elway at quarterback and receivers like Ken Margerum.

Finally he started throwing and got to the Cal 33 trailing by 2 with ten seconds left. Unfortunately Elway called time right then instead of waiting until three or four seconds. The FG was good, but there was still time, necessitating a kickoff...

Phony Benoni: Oh, yes, Ken Margerum. I remember rooting for him to be named the MVP of the Bluebonnet Bowl.
Jul-19-09  suenteus po 147: <Phony Benoni> I just finished adding all the games you posted for the 1950 USSR Championship: Game Collection: USSR Championship 1950 Did you submit the 18 missing games? I know you usually don't, but thought I'd ask anyway. I also completed the '45 and '49 championships and posted them at <Benzol>'s chessforum, if you want to look them over. I'm ready for you to post the 1954 USSR Championship in my chessforum, if it's ready. Once that's posted I see that all that is left is the 1980/81, 1984, 1986, 1987, and 1990 to post and we'll be done! (there's also the 1962, 1965, 1969, and 1972, but I've begun those already, and the 1967 Swiss, but that's crazy).
Jul-19-09  suenteus po 147: <Phony Benoni> I see your point. I checked three independent PGNs on three different databases, and they all have the same score for Flohr vs Suetin, 1954 that is in the database. I find it unlikely two different boards in the exact same round of the exact same tournament came up with the same game. I'm guessing the score of Flohr's game is lost to oblivion. The problem is that this happens again with the other two games you mentioned. All three of the independent PGNs I checked have the same score for both games. Kholmov's game, like Flohr's, is probably lost to oblivion. I don't know there is anything to be done about it, except collect them and make a footnote about it in the game collection page.

Btw, I uploaded those 18 missing games from the 1950 championship. If you want to skip 1954 for now, I'll happily take the next tournament on the list, when you have it prepared. In the meantime I have four other championships to work on and other tournaments as well. It feels good to be back :)
