Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: it was the last round. Rison-Morry was mired in last place. These things happen.

   Jun-06-22 W Adams vs M Kagan, 1947

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

perfidious: <PB> The question with Iglesias was whether he would hit enough to keep a regular job; it seems, restored to full health, he is doing well. That defence alone will keep Iglesias in the bigs for a decade--after all, look at Rey Ordonez, who hit .246 for his career, did not draw walks, had little power or speed, (typical OPS+ number in the sixties) yet hung around a long while because he was a glove wizard.

  WannaBe: Super easy-easy-easy trivia:

Prince Fielder is at 299 HRs, Prince will join his father with the next HR in the 300 club.

Only one other pair father/son combo is current member of this 300 HR club, can you name them?

First one to answer correctly will get a solid gold replica Rolacks or one-day supply of Ryce-O-Rony, your choice. =))

Penguincw: Is it that Ken Griffey father-son combo? :)

UPDATE: Just checked Wikipedia, and that's not it. :( The only other 2 father-son combos I know are Bobby/Barry Bonds (doesn't count though) and Sandy/Roberto Alomar.

Jun-23-15  technical draw: According to scientists if it hadn't been for "enhancers" Barry Bonds would only have hit 2 home runs. The science is settled.
Jun-23-15  Jim Bartle: I was a huge Bobby Bonds fan when he was on the Giants. He was going so great in 1973, looked like the sure MVP in the middle of August, then he more or less stopped hitting. Came in third for MVP behind Rose and Stargell.

He had a terrible, and terribly disappointing 1974, then the Giants traded him to the Yankees for Bobby Murcer.

Phony Benoni: Just looking at Levi Meyerle's 1871 season at third base for the Philadelphia Athletics of the Natinoal Association>

http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/...

Batting average: .492
On-base percentage: .500
Slugging average: .700
Fielding average: .646

All right, it was harder to get walks in those days, and the fielders didn't use gloves. But you don't often see a regular player whose slugging average is higher than his fielding average.

Penguincw: So glad no rabbits were around in TB this afternoon. Marco Estrada retired the first <22> batters before surrendering an infield single that was only confirmed after a challenge (I blame Joe West and New York for that one).

However, the most important part is that the Jays won anyway (1-0 in 12). The Jays are now 3-2 in extra innings and 6-15 in one run games this year. :| New York is going to win, but Jays are within 2 games of Tampa!

BTW: One thing I like about Toronto having a winning record is that it you combine the records of all Canadian teams, you get 39-35 (0.527). Do that all the U.S. teams, and you get 1032-1036 (0.499).

∴ Canadian baseball > American baseball. ;)

WannaBe: Pretty good article on baseball brawls, and it covers a few of interesting (previously) fights:

One section of the story reminded me of Dodgers at Wrigley and going into the stands: http://articles.latimes.com/2000/ma...

Rule number 1, never, ever, never, go into the stands and fight fans, ESPECIALLY if you are on the road!!! Dumb-Azzes

WannaBe: Today maybe the best chance for the "Vander Meer" feat.

Max Scherzer is on the mound against Phillies. (All ranking are based on NL only)

Philly Team BA: .241 (13th), Runs: 244 (15th, <DEAD> last), Hits: 603 (12th), HRs: 46 (14th, only ATL 42, have fewer HRs), Total Bases: 896 (14th, only NYM have fewer TBs), OBP: .292 (14th, MIL is last)

Game Time - 7:05 Eastern. If things get interesting, you can flip back/forth between that game and US Women Soccer game. =))

Jun-26-15  Deus Ex Alekhina: I haven't been following the Tigers too closely but I think keeping Justin Verlander on the roster is just wishful thinking. Most likely his arm is burned out; unless he can find the finesse to become a junkball pitcher, he should hang it up.
