Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

Penguincw: You know, all it takes is for the Jays to go 47-1 to match that record.

But still, that's impressive: those are the only 2 teams in MLB history with 2 separate 11+ game winning streaks in the same season.

I can see the Jays win 30-35 more games, which should be enough to end the playoff drought.

I'm not sure if it's a good thing or bad thing though if the Jays' season ends the same way as those Indians (a 4 game sweep of the World Series).

However, I just found that the 6 other MLB teams with 2 different 10+ game winning streaks in the same season all ended up losing the World Series. :|

Penguincw: I wonder what happened if one bought tickets before the price increased.

Anyway, I haven't been to a Jays game since Aug 30/2013, where they beat KC 4-2.

However, I know that a lot of people like to watch from their homes for <free>.

Last year, I switched my cable stuff from Rogers to Bell because the bill was exceeding $300+ a <month>. Unfortunately, Bell doesn't come with SNO (Sportsnet Ontario), which broadcasts every Blue Jays game (I have TSN). To obtain it from Bell, it's only $7/month, but I've been too lazy to call them. :p

WannaBe: <Penguincw: I wonder what happened if one...>

Nothing, you pay the (locked-in) price. If the price goes up, you can (try to) sell it at higher price, if there are takers.

I looked into it last year for GS/CLE play-off series, games 5 and 7 (in Oakland).

Example. Say I paid $2000.00 USD for 2 game 7 tix, and the series does not go 7 (It did not), I get full $2000.00 refund from Stubhub. (regardless of the original face-value of the tickets, could have been $600.00 or $700.00)

If there had been a game 7, I can try sell them for $3000.00 USD, and see if anyone is willing to pay for them. If not, I can list them $2800.00, or $2700.00

So, NYY will return to Toronto Sept 21-23, and the cheapest tickets right now Section 526 @ $26.00 and say you buy two. <NOW>.

By Sept 18, TOR & NYY are dead tied for first place, and tickets goes to $40.00, you can (re)list them on Stubhub and see if anyone will pay that price. Else you can always go to the game yourself.

In a way, it's kinda like stock market, supply & demand... =))

Penguincw: What the (beep) just happened?! Jays were leading 3-0, now trailing 4-3. D:

Huge game, as the winner of this game will go to sleep, knowing they lead the AL East.

Penguincw: Wow, that was epic. A 12 pitch at bat with 2 runners in scoring position, 2 outs, to end the ball game. The Jays can never seem to get their win streak past 11 games. :| (12 must be an unlucky number for the Jays, except that their lone HOFer wore it)

David Price's first 3 starts with Toronto: 2-0, 22.1 IP, 17 H, 3 BB, 4 ER 24 K, 0.90 WHIP, 1.63 ERA. Still great overall, but not as great as the first 2 starts today. Hoping the Jays can recover tomorrow!

Phony Benoni: Don't know why I didn't bring up the 1916 New York Giants:

http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/...

From May 9 to May 29 they won 17 straight games -- all on the road. However, they had started so poor (2-13) that the streak did no more than bring them up to second place. Afterward, they foundered,

By September 6, they were 59-62 and in 4th place, 13.5 games behind Philadelphia and Brooklyn and 12.5 behind Boston. From September 7 to September 30 the Giants won 26 in a row (with one tie), all at home. At the end of the streak they were in ... 4th place, and remained there by losing four of their last five.

Momentum is a wonderful thing when you have it.

Penguincw: Blue Jays win 3-1, NYY's lead down to half a game now.

Meanwhile, Shelby Miller in Atlanta loses his no-hitter. I swear, this guy a couple of years ago had a start where he gave up a leadoff single, and then retired the next 27 batters. :| The Battle of Chicago also had a no-no till the 6th (or so).

BTW: I just realized that the Mariners lost 22-10 yesterday, with Felix Hernandez pitching, on the 3 year anniversary of his perfect game. :p
