Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

   Jun-10-22 L T Magee vs E L Holland, 1948 (replies)

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: Black's bishop makes me think of Godzilla emerging from the depths of the ocean to wreak havoc. However, in the end it's his Two Little Friends who steal the show. Well, maybe not so litt.

Phony Benoni: it was the last round. Rison-Morry was mired in last place. These things happen.

   Jun-06-22 W Adams vs M Kagan, 1947

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

WannaBe: 10:48 Central time, only the 4th inning after that rain delay. I sure hope this doesn't end up like those games at Pitts & at Cincinnati, going to the bottom of 13th.

Phony Benoni: Hopefully they'll finish before I get up in the morning. I have my clock radio set to the time tie sports report hits the air, and it gets the day off to a bad start when they don't have the result.

Penguincw: ARI-PIT in the bottom of the <15th>, tied 8-8. Why does Pittsburgh always seem to play these long inning games?

Right off the bat, I can recall <2> recent 19 inning battles vs. Pittsburgh. One was vs. the Cardinals, the other was vs. Atlanta (the Jerry Meals incident one).

But it's the NL, so there's no curfew, right?

Aug-19-15  Travis Bickle: 6-6 after 7...

What if it starts pouring again?? ; P

Aug-19-15  Travis Bickle: Mr Benoni, then maybe we'll have to Play Two Tomorrow!

Tabanus: Augustus Naebinger Towsen, apparently a lonely soul.

<PB> I spent two hours on G E Rundell but made no progress. I think I've tried him also before. Perhaps the initials are wrong.

Phony Benoni: <tabanus> Thanks, as always.

The source for G. E. Rundell is the report in ACB. In looking for tournament information I stumbled across other chess-laying Rundells from the time but no clear information.

I'm also uncertain about Wilber, also from the 1931 tournament. I'll post on his page tonight from home.

WannaBe: Anyone put money on them Oakland A's last night? (Kershaw game)

I think it was something ridiculous, Dodgers -230, which would mean betting on Oakland would have (at least) doubled your money.

Would that game have qualified as 'Trap Game'? Oakland played Monday night at Baltimore, (lost) and flew cross country for the Tuesday night game.

While Dodgers had Monday off, and traveled from LA to Oakland. I can 'see' why Dodgers were such heavy favourite...

Phony Benoni: Hey, Travis, think the Cubs might like to trade Wrigley Field for Comerica Park? Our boys do enjoy hitting there! We'll even throw in a case of two of Bud to sweeten the deal. OK, we'll make it cold Bud.

Naw, it would never work. Not with our announcers. Last night, out "color" analyst was talking about a ball that with hit "up in the ivory."

Aug-19-15  Travis Bickle: Yo Phony, as far as I know the ballgame is blacked out in Chicago... I see Cubs vs Tigers on about 4 different cable channels but no game... Their supposed to be on ESPN but I see 2 spins on the scale Serena Williams playing tennis. LOL
Aug-19-15  Travis Bickle: If I hadn't gone to the drugstore and put on my car radio I wouldn't of known there was a game! I thought maybe the Cubs were sold & relocated to Syria...

P.S. How could Cubs Scouts & brass make a multi-million dollar deal for Lester when the guy is terrified to make a pickup throw???

Aug-19-15  Travis Bickle: Yo Phony, The Cubs have a lot of arms... How about we send you five pitchers free of charge?

P.S. Good thing I bet the under 30 runs scored, so I can break even... ; P

Penguincw: I see Daniel Norris proving to be just as good as David Price. Price takes the mound tomorrow night in Anaheim, so let's see how he fares.
Aug-20-15
Premium Chessgames Member
Phony Benoni: I hope Price fares better than Norris. He strained an oblique later and is headed to the DL.

In his next at-bat, Norris took three vicious cuts, missed all three times, and appeared to be wincing afterwards. He denies this caused the injury, but you have to be suspicious.

Phony Benoni: Tigers put not only Norris, but Anibal Sanchez on the disabled list. To help fill the gap they pick up another Toronto farmhand, <Randy Wolf> for "cash considerations". *Don't tell the Blue Jays, but Norm has been dead for quite a few years and Ron was a bust.)

Wolf will start against Texas on Saturday, his 39th birthday. Afterwards, he will start a new job as the dictionary illustration of "stop-gap".
