Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

Sep-20-15  Jim Bartle: The Cubs sure screwed over the owners of the homes beyond the outfield at Wrigley with those huge scoreboards. Though it may make a little money--or keep the homeowners from earning any--I still think it's a bad idea. The stands on the roofs were part of the atmosphere at the park.

Love the Stanford/USC cartoon, and as noted in the article, Trees are 6-3 vs Trojans in their last 9 meetings.

Granted, A. Luck was at Stanford during that period of time.

Sep-20-15  Jim Bartle: Luck was great, of course, and I think Stanford won all three games against USC. But it wasn't just his passing that won those games. He only threw 25-30 times a game. They ran the ball more than they passed.

Elway, for example, threw 35-40 times a game. Of course the team was terrible then, so he had to keep passing to the end, trying to catch up.

  WannaBe: Story of StubHub Journey:

Yesterday afternoon, I was at a friend's house watching the Giants and channel flipping the Oakland game. During the baseball game we & the TV announcers kept on mentioning the upcoming interleague game at Oakland.

And the possibility of Saturday 26th Zito v Hudson, (they pitched together for Oakland back in the days of dinosaurs.)

So, I jumped on StubHub just for sheets and giggles to see what the prices are going for. Lo & behold, second cheapest seats were $50.00 each, section 129, row 16, seats 5 and 6.

Immediate hit the 'Buy' button! (Average price is $95 for section 126-130) Once the transaction completed, I got the ticket serial numbers. And re-listed them at $90.00 each.

(But StubHub collects 10% for their troubles, so if the tickets get picked up by someone, I'd net $31 each, subtracting the $50 I paid upfront.)

If you go to MLB.com to purchase tickets in this section, they are currently listed at $101, plus $20.50 convenience fee and $4.25 per handling fee, for a total of $226.75

So far, no takers. Worst case scenario, buddy and I are going to an A's game this Saturday! =)

  Phony Benoni: Arizona finally went down Sunday. It will be a few days before the next round of clinches and drop-outs.

Kansas City will likely be first, currently at (3) for both division and wild card.

After that, Pittsburgh (4) and Cubs (5) will likely clinch their wild-card spots.

Dodgers are at 7, Mets at 8,

Toronto is at (5) for Wild Card, butt all other AL Contenders remain in double digits.

Tigers doing their best to be the next tema eliminated. losing the first game of a doubleheader and and behind in the 2nd.

  Penguincw: The Toronto Blue Jays down the New York Yankees 4-2! Their magic number to clinch the division is down to 10, but to make the postseason, it looks to be 4. Also, they're only a game and a half back of the Royals for the top seed in the AL, so still anything possible.

  WannaBe: If them Dodgers can win tonight, Giants would be 8 games back (biggest lead of 3 NL Divisions).

If Rangers or Astros are in the NL, they would be playing for the second wild card, if not, next year...

Sep-22-15  Black Ops: Yo Phony, Cubs Win! 9-5 over The Brewers!
Magic number = 4.

Tigers eliminated with a loss and wins by Texas and Houston.

  WannaBe: From ESPN:

<On Sept. 22, 1911, the pitching legend tossed a 1-0 shutout vs. the Pirates -- the last win of his career. He'd retire with 511 career wins, almost 100 more than any other pitcher in MLB history.>

  WannaBe: Just for sheets and giggles, I decided to look at what happens when team travels 2 or more time zones away for weeks 1 & 2 of NFL:

Week 1:

<LOST> Seattle (Pacific) @ St.L (Central)

<LOST> Detroit (Eastern) @ San Diego (Pacific)

<WON> Cincinnati (East) @ Oakland (Pacific)

<LOST> Baltimore (East) @ Denver (Mountain)

<LOST> Minnesota (Central) @ San Francisco (Pacific)

If you throw out those 5 games (1-4 0.200), rest of the road teams went 5-6

Week 2:

<LOST> San Francisco (P) @ Pittsburgh (E)

<LOST> San Diego (P) @ Cincinnati (E)

<LOST> Baltimore (E) @ Oakland (P)

<LOST> Seattle (P) @ Green Bay (C)

Road teams that played two or more time zones away, went 0-4. All other road teams went 7-5

Total after 2 weeks, road teams that have to travel 'far', are 1-8, while all other 'on the road' teams are 12-11.

Will update this total after week 3.

<??> Oakland at Cleveland

<??> San Diego @ Minnesota

<??> Chicago @ Seattle

<??> Denver @ Detroit

Sep-22-15  playground player: <Esteemed Baseball Mavens> A rather odd statistic jumped out at me today.

In 1962 Bob Buhl, in 70 at-bats, was hitless. Zero base hits. How that is even possible, I can't imagine.

But here's the funny thing.

He was walked six times.

What does your manager say to you if you walk a guy who literally never gets a hit?
