Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

Phony Benoni: Dodgers had trouble with the Rockies, but can now clinch the division with just one win over the Giants. Probably sweeter that way anyhow.
Sep-29-15  Black Ops: Yo Phony, don't you think this past season there's been an out of the ordinary high number of No Hitters & also No Hitter bids that failed? Also it seems to me the batting averages are significantly lower than in other years... You would usually see at least a couple 300 hitters on each team now it's a lot of 250 - 270 averages.

Phony Benoni: <Black Ops> I think somebody is deflating the baseballs.

Really, I believe these things come an go. Maybe right now there is more emphasis on "all-or-nothing" pitching and hitting styles, with either spectacular successes or miserable failures.

On the whole, hitting seems up just slightly this year. Here are numbers for batting average and runs-per-game for all of MLB since 2010:

2010: .257 4.38
2011: .255 4.28
2012: .259 4.32
2013: .253 4.17
2014: .251 4.02
2015: .255 4.26

  WannaBe: From ESPN:

<Tonight's potential clinching scenarios:

Cardinals beat Pirates, clinch NL Central

Dodgers beat Giants, clinch NL West

Blue Jays clinch AL East title with win over Orioles <AND> Yankees loss to Red Sox.>

So, two teams control their own destiny. Kershaw v. MadBum in San Francisco. Kershaw in 2015 have 3 starts v. SFG, 1-1 with one no-decision. Win came in LA, loss and ND was at AT&T.

WannaBe: Lookin' at the AL Wild Card standings, NYY is 4 games up on LAA (Second Wild Card contender). I really don't see NYY fallin' apart, (3 v BOS & 3 @ BAL).

So, let's just say they are Wild Card Team 1. Team Number 2 is in'r'stin' HOU/LAA/MIN.

HOU (2 @ SEA & 3 @ ARZ)
LAA (2 v OAK & 4 @ TEX)
MIN (3 @ CLE & 3 v KC)

Looks like HOU have it the easiest, if TEX & LAA are fighting it out, HOU can sweep ARZ and get AL West title.

Sep-29-15  Jim Bartle: TMQ is at the NY Times now? I used to love reading it every Tuesday, but it moved around so much I usually couldn't find it. I think it started at Slate, moved to somewhere in ESPN, then to Football Outsiders, NFL.com, and I don't know where.

Always a lot to disagree with, but always fun to read. Especially his names for teams, such as the Flaming Thumbtacks (Tennessee), New Jersey A, and New Jersey B.

WannaBe: <Jim Bartle> ESPN have gone thru a lot of changes, especially their web page layouts and fewer & fewer article writers.

I miss Jim Caple's weekly article during baseball season, and the always enjoyable Jayson Starks.

They are still with ESPN, but more like bloggers than 'writers'.

TMQ was at ESPN (Remember Page 2?) for 3 or was it 4 years, now with the cuts, he moved to NYT, which is fine. Still enjoyable read.

More on budgets and layoffs at ESPN, if you are interested in reading about that: http://thebiglead.com/2015/09/21/la...

Sep-29-15  Jim Bartle: Caple and Stark are both excellent writers, both entertaining and informative. They use modern statistical analysis for illumination, but don't oversue it the way so many of young showoff writers do.

I really enjoyed reading today's TMQ, I'd forgotten how much fun it is. As usual I disagree a lot with his play-or-punt analysis (which was a major theme in "Scorecasting" as well).

One of my favorites at ESPN is Tim Keown, who doesn't seem to write very often now. I read him a lot when he was at the SF Chronicle, and we wrote back and forth quite a bit.

WannaBe: Due to weather, Pittsburgh's game have been postponed, (split day/night double-header tomorrow.)

Baltimore just tweeted their game is also postponed to tomorrow. It will be a single ticket double-header in Baltimore. Guess fewer people are expected than the St.L/Pitt double-header. =)

Cubs/Cincy is still schedule to be played, no words yet from New York or Philadelphia.

The Bay Area have clear weather, no delay or postponement is expected for LAD/SFG tonight.

Sep-29-15  Jim Bartle: Boston 6, Yankees 4 after the 1st.

Penguincw: Boston defeats New York 10-4 in a relatively quick 3.5 hours (quick by their standards), Toronto's magic number to clinch the division down to 1!
Sep-30-15  Jim Bartle: Time for the Dodgers to get back to the World Series. I only wish they'd done it when Matt Kemp was still on the team and playing his best.

WannaBe: So, here we go with the NL Cy Young talk:

Arrieta: 21 Wins/229 Ks/1.82 ERA
Greinke 18/192/1.68
Kershaw 16/294/2.13

Just found out, the last game of the season for LAD will feature Frias (at SD) instead of the usual Kershaw scheduled start. Which means Kershaw will not reach 300K on the season.

To put that 294Ks in perspective, let's look at the past years:

2014 <242>, 2013 <232>, 2012 <230>, 2011 <248>, 2010 <231>, 2009 <261>, 2008 <265>, 2007 <240>, 2006 <216>, 2005 <216>, 2004 <290>, 2003 <266>, 2002 <334!!!>

Oh, that 2002, some guy named Randy Johnson...

C. Shilling (1997-1998) and then Johnson (1999-2002) were NL Ks leader, every year, it was 300 or higher. Wow! Are we going to see another 300K pitcher? Or will it go by the way of 30 Ws pitcher?

(N. Ryan in 1973, playing with the Angels, had 383Ks, 383!!!)

Greinke will still start the penultimate game on Saturday.

Which means Game 1 of NLDS will be Kershaw v. Harvey(??) LAD is also one back of NYM for the second seed of NL.

However, LAD lost the season series 3-4 to NYM, so they are actually 2 games behind NYM.

WannaBe: TOR and PIT won their first game of the double header, NYM winning. LAD's chance of catching NYM, not good.
Sep-30-15  Jim Bartle: I just don't see home field as a real big deal in baseball. Whether you have to play the wild-card game, yes, of course. And whether you have to play the 97-win team, or the 90-win team, definitely. But playing at home isn't typically a huge advantage.

And yes, Ryan's 383 strikeouts was amazing. He blew away Koufax's previous record of...382.

Phony Benoni: Good thing most of the remaining significant action is out West. There are likely to be a lot of unplayed games on the East Coast over the weekend.
Sep-30-15  Jim Bartle: <Wooooo, them angry Red Birds brought out their <THUNDER STICKS> and leads 6-0 over PIT, bottom third.>

From what I have seen they have brought their <ozzy gloves> as well.

Penguincw: Toronto clinches the AL East with an 11-2 win! Finally, they can add to their collections of pennant for the first time since 1992.

But let's not stop there. Toronto leads Kansas City by 2 games for the top seed in the AL, and its magic number is 4. Toronto has also clinched home field advantage in the ALDS.

Sep-30-15  Jim Bartle: <Finally, they can add to their collections of pennant for the first time since 1992.>

1993 was just a dream? The 15-14 game? Joe Carter?

Sep-30-15  Jim Bartle: At least the Giants' streak of nine postseason series wins won't be broken. But they'll have to wait at least another year to attempt to tie or break the Yankees' record of 11 straight.

WannaBe: Philadelphia just pulled ahead of them NYM!! 6-5 Top 8th.

NYM have one more at PHI, then it's 3 at Queens vs WAS. Any possible outside long shot snowball's chance that LAD can get home field for NLDS? =))
