Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

Tabanus: <PB> Eugene Kenneth Dart, like you supposed.

He re-married in 1957, and started immediately to play dart ... I mean chess! Not baseball, as far as I know :)

  WannaBe: From ESPN NFL:

<Jets won't wipe out in England

The team is bringing 350 rolls of toilet paper to replace the thinner version used in England.

Senior manager of team operations Aaron Degerness said, "Some may say that's a little over the top or whatnot, but it didn't really cost that much, so why not?">

WannaBe: So NFL in Europe begins this weekend with NYJ/MIA at Wembley, then Oct 25 BUF/JAX, at last Nov 1st DET/KC. Really, these are the teams NFL want to "show off" to Europe? Get more fan base/interest?

I mean, who is the QB for Miami this weekend?

WannaBe: Since y'all know I'm somewhat of a masochist when it comes to sports and scheduling 'fun'.

I want the NYY/BAL & WAS/NYM weekend games to be completely washed out possibly the CIN/PIT, too.

And then a total log jam for NL's #2 seeding (NYM or LAD) hence forcing NYM to play Monday, possibly Tuesday (That's if LAD can beat SD and get more wins than NYM)

Then ChiCubs be tied to PIT in total wins forcing PIT to win at least one make-up game to host the Wild Card Game.

Then have the AL Wild Cards be tied in wins, forcing NYY to play a make up game, possibly double-header for the right to host AL Wild Card Game (which is suppose to take place Tuesday, which means NYY will have to play their game Monday, weather permitting).

Oh!! What joy it would be to see the TV scheduling and MLB Execs' heads explode.

Maybe we can even throw in an injury or two in there, like CC sprain an elbow, or Harvey slips and tweak an ankle. Cespedes already have a bruised finger...

Oh, please, please, please, please, please.

  WannaBe: An interesting tidbit:

When Dodgers clinched the West in Arizona (2-years ago?) some team members thought it would be cool to jump into the outfield pool and go for a quick dip.

Of course, D'backs weren't too happy about that. Even though there was hardly anyone left in the stadium, fans or employees.

So when Dodgers clinched two days at San Francisco, some members decided it would be fun to slide down the big Coke bottle's slide. (Yes, inside the bottle is a slide.)

They were told by security/police to return to their club house and not wonder around the empty stadium. =))

Oct-01-15  Jim Bartle: <wb> I've been a 49ers fan since they played at Kezar Stadium, with the average John Brodie teams of the 60s. I've always liked the playing style and the type of players who generally made up the team.

But now they've gone to an ugly power style, they've had one player after another arrested, the classic uniforms have given way to these ugly black things, Levi's looks more like a palace than a football stadium. This resale rule sounds just like another way to rip off the fans.

I get the impression many longtime fans, typical football fans, feel they are being pushed aside for the wealthy Silicon Valley newby fans. I have nothing, or not much, against rich techies, but they do not make a good NFL fan base.

Oct-01-15  optimal play: <Jim Bartle> May I ask your opinion of 49ers new recruit, Jarryd Hayne?

http://www.49ers.com/news/article-2...

Have you seen him play yet?

Oct-01-15  Jim Bartle: I only saw him on one play as a punt returner, and he fumbled the ball and lost it. I don't know how much he is playing.

But the Rugby World Cup is going on right now, and I've watched a little. Those guys are just so huge and so fast, I can see how easily a lot of them could switch to American football pretty easily.

Oct-01-15  optimal play: <Jim Bartle: I only saw him on one play as a punt returner, and he fumbled the ball and lost it.> lol

Down here they're only showing highlights of him making big runs, so I guess his mistakes are being edited out for his home fans!

:D

Oct-01-15  Jim Bartle: Really, I have not been watching much. The Niners won the game I watched, then have gotten crushed the past two weeks.

I really don't know how he's been playing or how much. I repeat, rugby players are so huge, with such powerful upper bodies, it shouldn't be difficult for them to learn at least the non-ball handling positions in American football.

WannaBe: Twinkies win, LAA losing, HOU idle. If scores hold, both MIN & LAA would be a game back of HOU for second Wild Card.

On paper, HOU have the easiest schedule, (@ARZ) while MIN hosts KC for 3 (KC one back of TOR for best AL record, and home field all the way) and LAA @ TEX for 3 more.

How you like 'em apples?

  WannaBe: NYY/BAL, MIA/PHI, WAS/NYM all postponed!! C'mon rain! =)

WAS/NYM will play split double-header Saturday, no words on the schedule of NYY/BAL. 'Course, I am hoping for tomorrow's games to be all rained out, too!!

Phony Benoni: Meanwhile, the Tigers and White Sox are engaged in a season-ending battle to avoid the Central Cellar. Whoever wins the series finishes fourth, so the motivation is extremely intense and the publicity guys on both sides are in off-season form.

Penguincw: Toronto rallies to win 8-4 in Tampa, while Kansas downs Minnesota 3-1. Both team's magic number is 3 to clinch home field advantage throughout the playoffs.

I think Toronto holds the tiebreaker due to H2H, in which case, it's only 2. They could clinch tomorrow!

In other news, I heard about this "GoFundMe", which is an organization that wants to fund Steve Bartman to return to a Cubs playoff game...

Oct-03-15  Black Ops: I'm not asking you what to play but just giving you an idea of the position at move 6.

1. d4 Nf6 2. c4 g6 3. Nc3 Bg7 4. e4 d6 5. f4 0-0 6. Nf3

WannaBe: NYM lost the first game of the double-header! Dodgers have Z. Greinke going tonight. LAA down 4 runs, looks like it's all over for LAA & MIN.

Twins had a good season. No one expected them to be in contention, yet. But there they are going into the last Saturday of the season. Good for them. =)

Gonna be a lot of head scratching in Anaheim about this season, and what to do about Mike Sciocia.
