Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

  WannaBe: Updated Pennant Odds:

AL --

TOR 13-10
KC 2-1
TEX 9-2
HOU 5-1

NL --

CHI 3-2
NYM 2-1
LAD 4-1
StL 9-2

Oct-13-15  Jim Bartle: I know odds are set based on how many people bet which way, but those odds don't show much respect for Houston, do they? Or for Texas?

By flipping a coin, Houston has a 3-1 odds against winning the pennant: a deciding game today, then a series if they win. Yet they're given only 5-1 odds. Same with Texas, given only 9-2 odds.

The Dodgers have better odds, and the Cards the same odds, even though they are down 2-1 while Texas and Houston are tied 2-2.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott jinxed the Astros yesterday, tweeting out congratulations for winning the series in the 7th inning, when they were ahead 6-2.

  WannaBe: <JB> Interesting points you bring up, so let's take a closer look at the numbers for game 5s

(All pitching stats are 2015 regular season numbers)

<TEX/TOR>

C. Hamels 9-years experience in the bigs, 2015: 32 starts, 2 complete games, 1 shut out, 212 1/3 IP, 3.65 ERA

M. Stroman <ROOKIE> 2015: 4 starts, 0 CG, 0 SHO 27.0 IP 1.67 ERA

<HOU/KC>

C. McHugh 3-years 2015: 32 starts, 0 CG 0 SHO, 203 2/3 IP 3.89 ERA

J. Cueto 7-years 2015: 32 starts, 2 CG, 2 SHO, 212.0 IP 3.44 ERA (4-9 as starter for KC 7-4 as starter for CIN)

If I'm a betting man, I'd say it's 50-50 for both games and for both sides, experience (Hamels) vs a rookie, McHugh vs erratic Cueto.

Right now, TOR -181 & KC -131

  WannaBe: Arrieta will have plenty of rest to start for Cubs' game 1. If LAD & NYM go game 5, it will be deGroom vs Greinke.

So Kershaw would pitch game 2 if they can win 2 in a row over NYM. Ugh...

ALCS starts Friday, NLCS Saturday.

  WannaBe: Driving back from LA Monday, listening to ESPNRadio, commentators said Kershaw loves to pitch on 3 days rest. (Team player) Greinke would not.

Be interesting, if Kershaw comes back and pitch game 1 vs Cubs, if Dodgers win game 5. On another 3 days rest, and do a MadBum, as everyone's calling it these days.

  WannaBe: I don't understand how ESPN's Baseball Tonight got this figure/result:

<Baseball Tonight
@BBTN

Dodgers are 4-0 in elimination games since moving to LA.

They'll have Zack Greinke going up against Jacob deGrom.>

Do they mean Dodgers are 4-0 while playing in LA facing elimination? Otherwise that post makes no sense at all.

Oct-14-15  Jim Bartle: <Dodgers are 4-0 in elimination games since moving to LA.>

What??

  SwitchingQuylthulg: I think by "elimination game" they mean a playoff game in which either team would be eliminated with a loss; i.e. the playoff series is tied 2-2 (or 3-3) going into the final game. It's equivalent to saying the Dodgers haven't lost any playoff series by exactly one game since they moved to LA.

The four elimination games won by the Dodgers were game 7 of the 1965 World Series (against the Twins), game 5 of the 1981 NL Division Series (against the Astros), game 5 of the 1981 NL Championship Series (against the Expos) and game 7 of the 1988 NL Championship Series (against the Mets).

They did lose three World Series by one game as the Brooklyn Dodgers, most recently in 1956.

Oct-14-15  Jim Bartle: I've always thought an elimination game is any game where you lose and you go home.

  WannaBe: The way I see it, game 4 was elimination game for LAD, they <HAD> to win to continue playing. Ditto for StL. And Game 3 in Texas for TOR, elimination game, game 4, ditto.

English can be soooooooo confusing.

Oct-14-15  Jim Bartle: <So an elimination game is akin to zugzwang?>

I don't know how to reply to that? Everything I can think of to say would just put me in a worse position.
