Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: Prohibiting tagging up on foul flies would present a problem on flies very close tot he line. Often, you won't be able to tell if it's fair or foul unless it hits the ground. The play doesn't happen enough to require such drastic action.

And' I'd agree that letting one drop should generally be a late-inning play with the game definitely on the line (so to speak). Rather like John Madden's rule about not thinking about a two-point conversion until the fourth quarter.

3/8, one game not played. The LAD-NYM series screwed me up!

Oct-15-15  Jim Bartle: It's one thing to lose, but the Dodgers went awfully meekly in the last two innings, swinging at all sorts of bad balls. Utley hit a rocket to the wrong spot, but otherwise...

Chicago Cubs went 7-0 vs Mets this year. But the last time they saw each other was early July, before all the trades took place.

WannaBe: 35-17 Halftime, unfortunately, I don't think I'm gonna make it to the end of the game.

Good luck to them Boo-ins, who played horrible defence in the first 30 minutes.

Guess I'll have to catch the final score in the morning.

WannaBe: Boo-ins did great, only lost by 3 scores.

In other news, updated Odds on World Series:

<Odds to win the World Series

Toronto Blue Jays 7-4
Chicago Cubs 9-4
Kansas City Royals 3-1
New York Mets 4-1 >

Cubs are -150 to win the series over NYM, while Blue Jays are -145 to win their series over Kansas City.

So, the two teams without home field advantage in the League Championship round are bookie's favoured. Go fig.

When the season started, Cubs were pegged at 30-1 to win it all, if they do, Caesars is due to lose 350K (Chump change...)

Oct-16-15  Jim Bartle: <Boo-ins did great, only lost by 3 scores. >

Well, it was 5 before Stanford brought in the backups.

Listening to the broadcast Broons killed themselves with penalties and dropped TD passes in the first half.

But looking at highlights, the UCLA defense just opened up for Stanford runner Christian McCaffrey. He didn't do anything special beyond run fast through huge holes.

Oct-16-15  Jim Bartle: <Toronto Blue Jays 7-4
Chicago Cubs 9-4
Kansas City Royals 3-1
New York Mets 4-1 >

I love to add up the odds. It's 113% for a Series winner. I guess the 13% is where the bookies earn their cash.

WannaBe: You know the one thing that I really, really, really, really dislike with this expanded play-off format? Celebration.

1. You clinched a play-off spot. Champagne

2. You clinched a Wild Card spot. Champagne

3. You clinched the division. Champagne

3. You survived the one-game Wild Card play-off. Champagne

4. You won the Division Series. Champagne

5. You won the League Championship Series, Champagne

6. You didn't get hurt warming up/stretching. Champagne

7. You legged out an infield hit. Champagne

I mean, C'mon, man. I don't see this in NBA, NHL, or NFL play-offs. Did you see them Warriors spray champagne after each round victory? Did you see Patriots spray champagne? Geeeeeze.

Oct-16-15  Jim Bartle: Yeah, me, too. Save it for reaching the Series or winning it.

I don't gamble outside of the ChessBookie game. What does -150 mean?

Now regarding the image that may be disturbing, if you want to know what it is, it's basically a man who shaved his chest to display the Blue Jays logo.

That's pretty cool, but I've seen cooler: http://www.thestar.com/sports/2015/.... :)

Great moment in Blue Jays history, but a tattoo, really? Seems a bit too, permanent...

<WannaBe>, you may recall the last Stanley Cup Finals was between the Tampa Bay Lightning, and Chicago Blackhawks:

WannaBe: <Penguincw> The money line betting, is based on $100. Or "To win 100 bux".

-150 means you put 150 upfront, and if Cubs win, you collect 250 (wager + win)

Usually, for the underdog, it's +140, a.k.a. 10 cents line, but sometimes, it's 15 cents or 20 cents. Which means +135 or +130.

What that means, is you put 100 up front and you collect 235 or 230. The differential is where bookie makes their money. (see below)

In a money line bet, bookie do not make money unless underdog wins. Example:

I put 150 (to win 100) on the favoured, you put 100 on the underdog.

Underdog <LOSES> (as they are suppose to), bookie take your 100 and gives it to me.

If underdog wins, bookie takes my 150, pays you 135 or 130, and keeps the differential. =)

So, take tonight's Game 1. TOR -112 O/U 7.5

That is about as an even bet (-110) as you can get. I've seen cases where Kershaw or Greinke or D. Price or M. Bumgarner pitches, the line is -250 (!!!) or worse, -300.

I read an article about him, and he's a nice guy and all, but man, he has a lot of time and money on hand...

EDIT/UPDATE: Jays trail 3-0, after they strand 2 on with no one out.

Now I've never seen Volquez pitch before, but is it me, or his pitches have perhaps too much rotation...

Penguincw: And the Blue Jays lose 5-0. :( Pretty obvious what the problem was today: couldn't come through with runners on base! 0 for 7 with RISP, 9 LOB.
