Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

WannaBe: <JB> If I can make a little profit, great, if not, I'll go and have a great time, The Big Game isn't really on my bucket list, but it would be a great experience/atmosphere regardless. =)

Considering how much cozier Stanford stadium is, compared to the size of Rose Bowl or Coliseum the noise and festivity will be worth it, alone.

Still have not had a chance to visit War Memorial Stadium, yet...

WannaBe: Bwahahahaha... The only things missing are Tommy Trojan and Stanford Tree jumping out of the horse.

https://twitter.com/BonaguraESPN/st...

Oct-22-15  Jim Bartle: I believe it's been refurbished since I last went to a game, but Cal's stadium is great. First it has no track so the seats are close to the action. And the west side is just built into the hillside. The slope keeps going up and hundreds of people watch from up there on Tightwad Hill.

The only bad thing is it's extremely congested around the stadium, and there's no parking.

I guess I've gone to maybe fifteen Big Games, but the last one was in 1985. The worst was a loss in 1970, last game of the season. Stanford was already in the Rose Bowl, rated #7, and lost 29-28 in Plunkett's last regular season game. Fortunately they hammered Ohio State in the Rose Bowl.

WannaBe: <JB> The new stadium is NICE! Very tight/cozy, I was there last year for Stanford/UC Davis and then Stanford/Army game.

Nothing against the (aging) Rose Bowl or Coliseum, but these newer (furbished) stadiums have the seats stacked, so even when you are in the 300 sections, you are not like 80 yards away from playing field (Rose Bowl)

WannaBe: Mercifully the Seattle/Santa Clara game is over.

Kaepernick 124 yards passing (but 6 sacks -43) net 81 yards, or about 20 yards a quarter.

Team rushing 15 carries, 61 yards. 4 yards per carry. (not too bad average) 142 total yards of offense. <FOR 4 QTRS>!!

Kick return, 4 returns, 104 yards.

San Francisco, 9 punts, 390 yards.

Oct-22-15  Jim Bartle: Right, the Rose Bowl is odd. The slope of the stands is really flat, so the upper seats are far away.

Went to so many games there, 80,000 for USC and Cal, about 50,000 for the others. Also went to two big track meets with the stadium full: 1960 Olympic Trials and the 1962 US-USSR meet.

Oct-22-15  Jim Bartle: I saw a video of Kaepernick firing a long pass and hitting a guy right in the chest. Unfortunately it was a spectator on the sideline.
Oct-22-15  Jim Bartle: So, Stanford absolutely stomped UCLA. And UCLA is beating Cal by 25.

That all but guarantees a Cal win in the Big Game.

Oct-23-15  Black Ops: Hey Phony, I may go on that hunting trip for a bears head and not take a weapon...

The Cubs are at least two pitchers away, The Bears couldn't put away your Lions when The Lions tryed to give 'em the game...

The Blackhawks lost some really good players after winning The Cup & now our best defenseman Duncan Keith is out 5-6 weeks...

If only I could play tournament chess worth a damn. ; P

Phony Benoni: <Black Ops> Well, the Bears just fell victim tot he Monkeys / Typewriters paradox. If a Lions' quarterback throws up enough random passes, sooner or later Calvin Johnson will catch one.

WannaBe: Toronto is favoured tonight, -131 O/U is at 7.5

The question now, is will D. Price break the hex, or not? He is perfectly capable of losing a game 1-0 or win the game 1-0

(On the other hand, he can go to the mound tonight, and give up 5 runs in the first, a la Hammel in game 4 of NYM/CHI)

Will the real D. Price <PLEASE> stand up!?

WannaBe: Seattle Mariners have a new manager, here's his resume:

<Scott Servais bio

¡Angels assistant GM (2012-15)
¡Rangers senior director of player development (2006-11) ¡Rockies professional scout (2005)
¡11 MLB seasons as catcher
¡Member of Team USA that won gold in 1988>

What's the opinion of the members here on hiring manager(s) that have zero prior dugout experiences?

Unless you want to count coaching your son's T-ball league...

Penguincw: If the Jays do happen to lose by that score, there will be some controversy.

Looking at the bottom of the 2nd, Gordon hit a line drive to the outfield, and a fan <reached over>, and it was a HR. o.O

No no no. That's fan interference, double. And yes, it matters, as the next 2 batters struck out, and it could've still been 1-1.

And FTR, earlier this series, a ball was hit to right field, no fan touched it, and it was a double.

http://m.mlb.com/video/v523643383/e...

So if a fan touches the ball, a double becomes a homerun?!

Why am I surprised?! Obviously, MLB will do whatever it takes to ensure a Canadian team will not win the World Series.
