 | | WannaBe: That was a freakin' BRILLIANT play, put up your hands as the ball rolled into the ivy. Saved a run, at least!! |
| Oct-20-15 | | Jim Bartle: Or he could have made a big show of looking for the ball, and the umps would have got the idea. I don't think the rightfielder touched the ball, but I wonder what the rule is if a player has touched it and then it gets stuck in the ivy. |
| Oct-20-15 | | Jim Bartle: Put a Luzinski or an Incaviglia in left, and you're going to the pay the price sometimes. |

| Oct-21-15 | | Jim Bartle: In "Moneyball" Billy Beane says that a player's defensive ability doesn't matter that much, that the difference between good and bad defense doesn't really add up to that much, that a player's ability to get on base is much more important. Yet as I watch playoff games I notice many of the closer games turn on either good or bad defensive plays. The Cubs lost last night in part because a catcher couldn't hold a third strike and the slugging leftfielder couldn't catch a line drive over his head. Maybe that attitude is a reason Beane's A's have never won anything in the postseason. |

 | | Penguincw: Huge inning for the Jays, as they go up 5-0 in Game 5, which is an elimination game. |

 | | Penguincw: < WannaBe: Don't recall ever seeing WP turned into CS before. > I think one time during an NLDS, a runner took off from 1st trying to steal, the ball was a wild pitch, but the catcher threw out the runner at 3rd. Does that count? In other news: http://bleacherreport.com/articles/.... The Mets are likely to advance, but not certain!
BTW: 2 weeks ago, the Texas governor prematurely congratulating the Astros on advancing to the ALCS, and hoped for an all-Texas ALCS. Sorry, I'm <Back to the Future>. Remind me what happened? |
Oct-21-15
 | | WannaBe: <Penguincw> Hmmmm.... Tonight, it was at second base, very very unusual play. Looking at the live box score, there's no CS or WP. The ball definitely went off the glove of the catcher, so unless it was a strike 3 with man on first base, and runner had to advance. |
| Oct-22-15 | | Jim Bartle: As far as I can figure out, this year's Series will be the first between two expansion teams. None of the sixteen pre-1961 teams will be playing. |
| Oct-22-15 | | Jim Bartle: With the articles on the 40th anniversary of game six, I took a look at the final innings. Here's Doyle getting thrown out at home in the 9th: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GHQ... Why didn't Doyle slide? He probably would have been safe. The announcers didn`t say a thing; today they would have analyzed it frame by frame (does video have frames?) and probably condemned Doyle. |

<Among small-market teams, the A's and Twins, for example, didn't take the same approach as much as some folks think they did; Billy Beane thought for quite awhile that defense was overrated and pioneered the Earl Weaver school of sabermetrics, while the Twins believed in defense so much they trained their staff to pitch-to-contact. > http://www.beachwoodreporter.com/sp... My vague impression is that sabermetricians think they've gotten much better at evaluating defense and gauging its importance. |
| Oct-22-15 | | Jim Bartle: Interesting. Certainly defensive stats have advanced a great deal, though they are also headache-inducing to read. I think the psychological value of having a good defense is important. Whitey Herzog wrote he told his pitchers, "Throw the ball over the plate, you've got a great defense behind you which can catch almost everything." The Cubs playing Schwarber in the outfield is a classic case of giving up defense for offense. He certainly can hit, but he doesn't seem capable of catching anything but routine balls. |

 | | WannaBe: Since Super Bowl 50 is at Levi Stadium, I looked it up on Stubhub, cheapest tix is $4,000 after fees, $4,600 and change... 15% fee collected by Stubhub. Ugh. Just hoping my 2 tix investment in that Cal/Stanford game works out. Otherwise I'll have to go to the game meself! =)) |
| Oct-22-15 | | Jim Bartle: If you want your Big Game tickets to earn a profit, you better hope for Cal to come back vs. UCLA. Sorry to get nostalgic, but one of my best memories as a kid was going with the Cal band to the UCLA game in the Coliseum in 1967. I was in high school, a gofer for the band, and spent most of the night game down in the field. Watched the play up close, Gary Beban dissecting the Bears, a brilliant performance on his way to the Heisman. |
