Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

WannaBe: Now that Rams are moving back to LA (LAR), if I am the commissioner:

1. Move Dallas to NFC South and move Carolina to NFC East.

2. Move Miami to AFC South and move Indianapolis to AFC North and move Baltimore to AFC East.

I mean c'mon, you have NE, NYJ, BUF and MIA?? But what the? I know fans in New England areas (as a whole) would love to go to Florida in Nov or Dec for a football game, but is that fair to Miami fans that want to go to Buffalo?!

perfidious: <WannaBe....1. Move Dallas to NFC South and move Carolina to NFC East.>

Seems reasonable to me, but the hue and cry over that would dwarf Bill Bidwill's clamouring to keep Cards in the NFC East some years ago, solely because the home date with Dallas was his meal ticket.

I hear what you're saying, but things have changed. Dallas used to be a perennial contender. After years of mismanagement by the GM - nay, decades (!!) of mismanagement - the Cowboys are only relevant because of the stadium.

The once-great rivalry games are now only interesting because the Eagles and Giants are also losers, and so loser versus loser keeps the score close and interesting.

I, for one, have no problem with <WannaBe>'s proposal now, although a decade ago I would have clamoured for no changes right along with Bidwell.

Jan-14-16  thegoodanarchist: <WannaBe: 49ers have hired Chip Kelly as new head coach!! >

Another owner with a huge ego making a mess of things. At least Dan Snyder's team finally won the division.

Jerry Jones had 3 straight seasons of 5-11 not too many years after firing Jimmy Johnson. Looks like he is headed that way again.

Jan-14-16  Jim Bartle: Looks like a good choice to me. Kelly prefers the old Walsh/Mariucci style of football, not the brutish Harbaugh style. Better fit for the 49ers. Or at least for this 49er fan.
Jan-14-16  thegoodanarchist: <JB> Wait until Kelly gets rid of any and all decent skill players and finishes 6-10. Let me know then if you still feel the same.
Jan-14-16  Jim Bartle: Of course it could all go horribly wrong.

As far as getting rid of any and all decent skill players, it will be impossible to do that with the 49ers by definition.

I've noticed that my kibitzes are generally met by silence. This is no doubt because they are like the Pope speaking <Ex Cathedra>. There is no repoly because there cannot possibly be one.

So when I say that the Chiefs, Broncos, Seahawks and Cardinals will win this weekend, everybody knows exactly what the results will be. It's quite different with <WannaBe>. This is proven by the fact that he is willing to back his opinions with cold, hard cash, while I am not.

Geography-wise, this plan makes a lot of sense. But, to mangle the words of a certain unpopular NFL owner, “The Redskins will never – and you can put that in all caps – NEVER – agree to stop playing the Cowboys twice a year.” It’s not just Dallas and their NFC east foes, either; too many other good rivalries would fall by the wayside. Panthers-Falcons, Panthers-Saints, Ravens-Browns, and especially Ravens-Steelers are all twice-a-years that the NFL’s TV partners milk for ratings and talking points.

If you want to put Miami in the AFC South, I’d suggest just doing a straight swap with Indianapolis. The Dolphins still get to play in a warmer-weather division and it cuts down on travel time for all concerned, since Indy gets annual trips to Buffalo, New Jersey and Foxborough. Plus, Indy versus New England twice a year would get the network executives foaming at the mouth (although those of us who got sick of hearing about DeflateGate last February might have to mute their televisions).
