Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

May-10-16  Jim Bartle: I see in the video players in the opposing team's dugout jump up and start pointing when the batter passes the runner.

It usually looks as if the people in the dugout are distracted, not paying attention. But if one runner passes another, or a runner misses a base or doesn't touch coming back on a fly out, all the players start jumping up and yelling.

May-10-16  playground player: <Highly Esteemed Baseball Mavens> It's been too long since I visited this oasis of sanity.

Baseball nicknames: two of the all-time great nicknames: Arlie Latham, "The Freshest Man on Earth," and Bob Ferguson, "Death to Flying Things." It seems Latham was named for his penchant for practical jokes, and Ferguson for his remarkable talent for running down fly balls.

I almost wish I hadn't looked it up. Speculating about those nicknames was a lot of fun.

<Jim Bartle> The batter passing the runner ahead of him on the basepaths? Does that happen anymore? I mean, since Ernie Lombardi retired...

May-10-16  Jim Bartle: <pgp> Happened yesterday on a home run.

Somehow reminds of a joke about the Brooklyn Dodgers way back when:

"The Dodgers have three men on base!"

"Which base?"

I had heard Gary Pettis referred to as "Death to Flying Things." Guess it wasn't original.

One of my favorite nicknames is "Stan the Man Unusual" for the Orioles' Don Stanhouse.

May-10-16  playground player: <Jim Bartle> Ferguson got his nickname in the 19th century.

I was watching Game of the Week one day, years ago, and Tony Kubek--or was it Bob Costas?--said of Gary Pettis, "He's the ideal leadoff man, although he doesn't get on base that much."

Huh?

Hank Aaron hit his only non-out of the park home run (in the park HR, in another word), off some guy named Jim Bunning...

May-10-16  Jim Bartle: Jim Bunning, who won 57 games over three years, yet didn't win twenty in any year.

Have I told my favorite Aaron story on this page?

In the 50s Aaron faked a bunt and Jackie Robinson at third didn't even move.

Afterward Aaron asked Robinson why he didn't come in when he squared to bunt. And Robinson said, "Henry, any time you want to bunt that's just fine with us."

Noah Syndergaard with his second home run of the game! Has a pitcher ever hit three in a game, you ask? Yep. Once. Jim Tobin of the 1942 Boston Braves did it. He hit .242 with six home runs that year.>

<SportsCenter
@SportsCenter

THOR! Noah Syndergaard hits his 2nd HR of the game. He's 1st pitcher with multi-HR game since Micah Owings in 2007. >

May-12-16  Jim Bartle: I listened to a game in 1966 when Braves pitcher Tony Cloninger hit two home runs. Both grand slams. Giants pitcher Ray Sadecki also hit a home run.

Sadecki was, as they say, "Taking one for the team", so his homer was a token of appreciation.

May-12-16  Jim Bartle: That's why they traded Cepeda to get him, so he could mop up in lost causes.

Actually Sadecki turned it around and pitched well for the Giants in 1967 (as Cepeda won the MVP in St. Louis), but went rapidly downhill after that.

May-12-16  Jim Bartle: Scherzer struck out 20 in nine innings, the fifth time it's been done. The others were Kerry Wood, Randy Johnson, and Rogers Clemens twice.

How many walks in those five games?

Phony Benoni: Scherzere walked nobody, whch is quite remarkable. You can find a list of other high strikeout games here:.

Phony Benoni: Contrast with this game, where Nolan Ryan goes 13 innings, strikes out 19, and walks 10.

http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/...

Stunts like that will shorten your career.

May-12-16  Jim Bartle: All five 20 K games were with no walks. Scherzer hardly threw any balls at all last night.
