| May-07-16 | | Jim Bartle: All true. The evolving dinosaur (Darwin Barney) was on the way to second and the ball bounced off the wall directly into Puig's hand. You can see Barney look to right and really turn it on, so he wasn't going at absolutely top speed at that moment. And he was out by about one foot. If batters didn't try to take bases because there's some chance they'll get thrown out, they would save 10 outs and lose 90 bases not taken. |

 | | Penguincw: Hmm, look at this video: http://www.sportsnet.ca/basketball/.... Dwyane Wade takes some practice shots during the Canadian National Anthem. That's disrespectful. Well, the Heat lost, so karma?
Reminds me of last year during the IIHF Championship, gold medal game, when the Russians left the ice before the conclusion of O'Canada. |

 | | WannaBe: A snowball's chance in Hades.
When pigs fly.
When Bartolo Colon hits a homer.
Guess that last one can't be used anymore. |
|
| May-08-16 | | Jim Bartle: Colon should have done what a rookie did in that circumstance (he was given the silent treatment). He should have started high-fiving and hugging imaginary people. |
|
| May-08-16 | | Jim Bartle: He smashed Randy Johnson's record for oldest player to hit his first homer. Probably not a record to be aspired to. Probably not one to be broken soon. |
|
May-08-16
 | | Penguincw: Looking at this page: http://www.gammonsdaily.com/mlbs-ol.... Colon is the oldest active MLB player. Dickey and Uehara are the other pitchers on the list. None have hit their first MLB homer yet, but they're both in the AL. I seriously doubt Uehara will even bat again in his career, but Dickey, possible. In order for Dickey to break Colon's record, it looks like he will have to not homer 'til October 13th, 2017 or later. He had 2 hits and an RBI in 6 at bats with Toronto in 2013, so hey, it's possible. |
|
| May-08-16 | | Jim Bartle: Dickey has 3 doubles in 205 at bats. Not much of a threat, i don't think. Aren't there any older Kuipers in the majors, older position players with no homers? (Kuiper got his only homer at age 27.) But most no-power players don' t last into their forties. I will bet Hoyt Wilhelm holds the record for most years playing in the majors after hitting his final home run, 20 years. |
|
May-09-16
 | | Phony Benoni: I think Dickey does pretty well for hitting the ball with his knuckles. |
|
| May-09-16 | | Jim Bartle: A common misconception. It's with his fingertips, not his knuckles. Did anybody see Wright pitch against the Yankees last night? The pitches really look easy to hit and catch, yet everybody has so much trouble. He did throw some fastballs, including the one hit for the ninth-inning home run. |

 | | WannaBe: B. Harper set a new record yesterday, in that extra inning game vs ChiCubs. 0AB 6BB 1HBP
http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/1... Poor Ryan Zimmerman. |
|
| May-09-16 | | Jim Bartle: So in the current shorthand, Harper went .000/1.000/.000. Still that's a 1.000 OPS. Bill James did an article at least 25 years ago analyzing whether there was ever a hitter so good it would be better just to walk him every time. He found that not even Babe Ruth came close. I wonder if he still thought that during Barry Bonds' big years. |

 | | OhioChessFan: I recall some discussion of that in the year George Brett made a run at .400, but that was before the cybernuts took over. As for the strategy, if I was the manager, I'd bat them leadoff. |

| May-09-16 | | Jim Bartle: <I recall some discussion of that in the year George Brett made a run at .400, but that was before the cybernuts took over. As for the strategy, if I was the manager, I'd bat them leadoff.> I'm assuming that anybody good enough to consider walking every time has power. If you bat him leadoff he will bat many fewer times with men on base, so the value of his power goes down. And the wisdom of walking him every time goes down. Having said that, teams have been batting power hitters who also walk a lot at #2. The Giants started doing this with Darrell Evans in the 80s. He had a lot of power but only hit .250, not the traditional #2 hitter at all. But he did walk an awful lot and scored a lot of runs in front of Clark and Davis. |

| May-09-16 | | Jim Bartle: Cubs and White Sox are playing a four-game series, two at each park? Great idea! |

May-09-16
 | | WannaBe: <Jim Bartle> Yeah, all the 'natural rivalry' games are now 2 and 2 split, WAS/BAL, CHI/CHI, LAD/LAA, SFG/OAK, this is due to the Houston re-alignment to AL West, creating a balanced divisions. Before, it was 3 and 3 split when interleague was "an event", e.g. http://www.baseball-reference.com/t... LAD @ LAA (Or ANA) June 2, 3, 4 and then later July 13, 14, 15. |
|
| May-09-16 | | Jim Bartle: But what I think is great are going directly from one stadium to the other, just crossing the city. |

 | | WannaBe: <JB> Yes, MLB are doing it for everyone, or at least the ones that are natural rivalry. This year, SFG/OAK, LAD/LAA, CHI/CHI, NYM/NYY, WAS/BAL, TB/MIA, KC/StL are all playing 2-2 split, back to back. Don't know about those unnatural/fake rivalry interleague games... For a while MLB scheduled Seattle to be San Diego's West Division rival. |

| May-09-16 | | Jim Bartle: Ten most unlikely home runs: http://espn.go.com/blog/sweetspot/p... Statistically Esteban Yan is the best hitter in major league history. 1.000 BA, 2.500 SA. Two ABs, 1 HR (on the first pitch he ever saw), 1 single. |

 | | OhioChessFan: I just stumbled on this from 2 years ago:
<JB: This is a sign that the HR Derby should be allowed to die a dignified death. It's just boring and artificial.> I thought I was the only one. It mostly proves who has the best pitcher. <I'd like to see a "fastest to third base" contest. With weight classes, so Prince Fielder can compete.> 'Twould be great to see Billy Hamilton, Jose Altuve and Mike Trout, alas no Dee Gordon. <Or best throw to third or home from right or center. The throw would have to arrive in a certain number of seconds, and each contestant would decide exactly how deep he'd like to throw from. A little strategy.> I'd go with points for speed and accuracy from a predetermined spot. <As far as I'm concerned there's nothing as exciting in baseball as a strong throw from the outfield.> I love outfield throws too. Most people go for the home run, but is a bit Neanderthalish to me. Anyway, the skills competition for the NHL is far better than the Home Run Derby for MLB. |
