| Aug-09-09 | | Jim Bartle: Bring back Larry Bowa!! |
Aug-09-09
 | | Phony Benoni: And, remember, many of the old traditions still live on in the minor leagues: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H2Ud... |
| Aug-09-09 | | Jim Bartle: Exactly what I was thinking! But I didn't know any good examples. All I could think of was the catcher throwing the potato into left field. The odd thing is that I thought the minor leagues were now for developing players, not necessarily winning games. But I guess some managers' competitive juices keep flowing. |
Aug-09-09
 | | Phony Benoni: I can see why that manager (Phil Wellman) never made it to the major leagues. No arm. Couldn't even get the rosin bag to home plate. The minors also seem to have turned into an extra couple of roster spots for the major league team. It's routine to bring up a pitcher for a spot start or to help out a tired bullpen, then send them right back down after one game. And there was a time when the big club would hesitate about bringing up young stars in August or September because it might affect the minor team's chances in postseason play. |
| Aug-09-09 | | A.G. Argent: Oooh, the Braves deserve that guy in their system. And yeah, Jim, I forgot about Bowa the Human Volcano. But he's still around. Still the 3rd base coach with the Dodgers, ain't he. Was last year. And speaking of controversial calls, I remember being struck by the irony of him coaching with the Dodgers and Davy Lopes, 1st base coach with the Phils and the two teams meeting in last year's NLCS, what with their history of a situation they were involved in back in the '70's as players. Don't recall exactly what it was though. I'm old. |
Aug-09-09
 | | Phony Benoni: Oh, you mean this little brouhaha?
http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp... And here's the game.
http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/... I can't seem to find a video, though; I'll leave that for the pros. |
| Aug-09-09 | | Jim Bartle: Paging President Obama!! Time for another beer summit. (I always liked Lopes, even though he played for the O'Malleys. In fact I liked every guy in their lineup except for Garvey.) |
Aug-09-09
 | | Phony Benoni: That's two people who hated Garvey. What was it, the smugness factor? |
| Aug-09-09 | | playground player: <Phony Benoni> Ain't it da truth? For some reason all this Triple Crown Talk reminds me of a quote from Lefty O'Doul: "Good pitching stops good hitting, and vice versa." My wife thought Steve Garvey was the cat's meow, and I always thought he was a big phony. As a reporter experienced in covering local and county politics, I can spot guys like that a mile off. When Cindy Garvey's book came out, Mrs. PP had to admit I was right about him. |
| Aug-09-09 | | Jim Bartle: At least three. Wes Parker couldn't stand him, basically because Garvey would rather hold the ball (avoiding a possible error) rather than try to throw out a runner going to third. And runners knew he wouldn't throw. |
Aug-09-09
 | | Phony Benoni: Just Wikipedia'd Steve Garvey. Found out he now produces infomercials. That's enough for me. |

 | | Phony Benoni: Most businesses in the Detroit area are suffering due to the economy, but the makers of antacids are doing a thriving business due solely to the efforts of Fernando Rodney. Today was a typical example. Rodney comes in for the 9th with the Tigers up 8-6, and faces Mauer/Morneau, the new MM combination who had spent the weekend leaving Tigers fans nostalgic for the good old days when they only had to get Maris and Mantle out. Mauer hits a harmless grounder. One out.
Morneau hits a harmless grounder. Two out.
Tigers fans relax. Michael Cuddyer belts a home run.
Everybody in the city nods. Uh-huh, typical Rodney. Now that it's a one-run game he's OK, and the next hitter bounces out harmlessly. He's now saved 23 of 24, but I hear that the National Association of Cardiologists is planning to bring their annual convention here to pay tribute. |
| Aug-09-09 | | Jim Bartle: Does Rodney have a nickname yet? You know, like "Wild Thing"? |
Aug-10-09
 | | Phony Benoni: Naw, Just calling his "Rodney" is funny enough. Though I keep getting these visions of Mitch Williams every time he pitches. |
| Aug-10-09 | | Jim Bartle: Are really nutty, hard-throwing, hyper closers like Dibble or Gagne becoming an endangered species, or am I just not paying attention? I want another Goose Gossage. I saw a tape once where the lights went out when Gossage was in his windup. The lights came back on in about three seconds, and the batter was curled up in terror near the on-deck circle. |
| Aug-10-09 | | Travis Bickle: <A.G. Argent> I think Piniella did toss a base quite a few yards lol. To me Billy Martin was the best at blasting an ump into next week and I especially loved the Billy dirt covering on the umpires shoes hahah!!! Earl Weaver knew his rulebook and could really put the pressure on an ump who flat out blew a call. One forgotten manager Dallas Green when he managed The Philies could put the fear of God into an umpire about a blown call. Here's Lou getting his Irish up!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VTmJ...
This has strong language, (It's up to Phony Benoni if he wants to show it), but it is hilarious of Earle Weaver going into a 3 minute tirade with an umpire. They have a mic on them.

Short funny Billy Martin clip.

Aug-10-09
 | | Phony Benoni: <JB> How could your forget THe Mad Hungarian, Al Hrabosky? |
| Aug-10-09 | | Jim Bartle: I was afraid to mention his name. |
| Aug-10-09 | | Jim Bartle: Oh man oh man, Travis. What a great video!
Weaver: "You put your finger on me!"
Weaver: "I'm gonna be in the Hall of Fame."
Haller: "For what, ****ing up the World Series?" |
| Aug-10-09 | | A.G. Argent: Oh man, listen to this one if you want Earl Weaver and strong language. This would put Ted Williams to shame, who was also well-known for his "colorful" language. And this was a radio interview! He, of course, knew it was to be broadcast which of course it never was. How do you REALLY feel, Earl? - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9YKx... |
| Aug-10-09 | | Jim Bartle: Damn, I can't find any videos of these, but when Martin was managing the A's he did some commercials similar to the one Travis linked to. In one he charged out to confront the umpire and started telling him, "You know, that was a great call, you were really on top of it, the league ought to give you a raise, how are you wife and kids?" Waving his arms and sticking his nose in the ump's face the whole time, of course. Anybody remember the name of that announcer known for his malaprops, played second for the Yankees in the 50s? Jerry somebody, I think. |
Aug-10-09
 | | Phony Benoni: Jerry Coleman. Here are a few classics: http://www.funny2.com/coleman.htm |
| Aug-10-09 | | Jim Bartle: Right!! Winfield's head rolling across the field still makes me laugh every time I think of it. |
| Aug-10-09 | | Travis Bickle: Hey Guys come to my Forum to hear the most hilarious meltdown of a manager of all time. I put it on my forum cause the language doesnt get anymore descriptive than this LOL! |
| Aug-10-09 | | Jim Bartle: Don't even have to look: Jim Frey, right? |
