| Aug-10-09 | | Travis Bickle: Nah Mr lee Elia. |
| Aug-10-09 | | Jim Bartle: Oops, right tirade, wrong name. The bums in the bleachers, never worked a day in their lives? |
| Aug-10-09 | | Travis Bickle: No, "85 per cent of the people work the other 15% come here" hahahaha!!! |
| Aug-10-09 | | Jim Bartle: Is there really a pitcher named http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/ba...? Maybe not for long. Jeter leadoff homer to straightaway center. |
Aug-10-09
 | | Phony Benoni: Well, Jeter will do that to a lot of pitchers.
"Zep" looks like one of those young fireballers with control issues. 34 innings, 18 BB, 37 K, .197 batting average against. |
| Aug-10-09 | | Jim Bartle: His name makes a nice semi-circle on his back.
I just caught that homer on the fly between innings of the Red Sox game. Not sure who the Sox are playing. |
Aug-10-09
 | | Phony Benoni: Just the Tigers. Red Sox up 4-0 after three innings against Edwin Jackson. With the run support Jackson usually doesn't get, this game is over. |
| Aug-10-09 | | Jim Bartle: Leyland had to go to the bullpen early. One of those "nights he says Ni." |
| Aug-10-09 | | Travis Bickle: Last I checked the Cubs were getting their a$$ handed to them by The Rockies 9-1 so Im looking forward to football season. Here's an interesting clip of The Vikings coach's assessment of The Bears. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aYKI... |

| Aug-11-09 | | Benzol: <Phony Benoni> Dave are you in possession of Alekhine's "My Best Games of Chess 1908-1923"? If so check out game 53 against E Rabinovitch. This is Alyekhin's 13th round game against I Rabinovich from Game Collection: USSR Championship 1920 played on the 21st of October. I'm also going to check in Skinner and Verhoeven to see if there are any other Alyekhin gamescores available from the 1st USSR Ch. If so I'll post them on your forum here. |
| Aug-11-09 | | Benzol: Dave, S & V agree with your Chess Stars line-up. As a side note there was a subsidiary event played alongside the masters tournament. It was won by K Vigodchikov after a play-off match with Klyatskin. Alekhine's brother Aleksei finished in third place. Ilyin-Zhenevsky in his book "Notes of a Soviet Master" wrote "It is curious that Alekhine, who was a member of the organising committee and was well aware of our difficulties, instead of trying to ease the conflict or help us with his advice, poured oil on the fires by declaring that he too would refuse to play on since he could not play against hungry opponents." |
| Aug-11-09 | | playground player: <Phony Benoni> Jerry Coleman is the all-time champ, I grant you that. But surely Ralph Kiner rates an honorable mention. My two favorite Kiner Klassics: "That pitch hit him right in the back of the back," and "I see the Charlotte Harlots won today." |
| Aug-11-09 | | Jim Bartle: What would a booth with Vin Scully and Jerry Coleman (or Kiner) sound like? Scully never ever makes a grammatical mistake, even during bang-bang plays, never has to correct himself or say something twice. While you never know what might come out of the mouths of the other two. |
| Aug-11-09 | | Jim Bartle: Lots of hard hitting in the Patriots-Lions game tonight. I mean Sox-Tigers. Eckersley actually thinks Porcello really wasn't trying to hit Youkilis. Something I've never seen: after a brawl, the two managers talking calmly to each other. |
Aug-11-09
 | | Phony Benoni: Wouldn't you know it? I go out for a while instead of staying home to watch the fights, and a baseball game breaks out. What happened? |
| Aug-11-09 | | Jim Bartle: Sox' Takawa hit Cabrera on the hand, again, and Cabrera had to leave a little later. Tigers went up 3-0. Porcello came way inside against one of the Sox, then later hit Youkilis in the back. He charged the mound, threw his helmet at Porcello, and tackled him. Benches cleared, big pile-up, typical baseball "brawl." Leyland and Francona spent some time chatting amiably, as umps conferred, Porcello tossed out. Tigers brought in Laimbeer, who gave up a 3-run shot to Bay, and laid two fat ones for two homers to Lowell to go to 6-3 Sox. Now rain delay. Eckersley (announcer) changed his mind, now thinks Porcello hit Youk intentiionally, to show his teammates he's got their back. |
Aug-11-09
 | | Phony Benoni: Oh, great. If Cabrera is out for any length of time the Tigers are in big trouble. I see Lambert (wish they had brought in Laimbeer) has gone five innings already, taking one for the team. You almost hope that the rain delay holds up, and the rest of the bullpen can take a rest. |
| Aug-11-09 | | Jim Bartle: Doesn't seem like a serious injury to Cabrera. He stayed in the game at first, then left in the middle of his next at-bat. I really wrote Laimbeer! I was thinking the names were similar, then slipped up. |
Aug-12-09
 | | Phony Benoni: X-rays negative on Cabrera. No time frame on his return. |
| Aug-12-09 | | Jim Bartle: I've been watching games for several days in a row for the first time in many years. What has struck me most is the importance of good infield play. Not just avoiding errors, but making tough plays, not giving up extra bases, turning the double play. It's striking the difference in the quality of play among some of the teams, and how important it is in saving or giving up runs. |
Aug-12-09
 | | Phony Benoni: Ah, it's good to see Youklis and Porcello embracing and having a good laugh about the whole business: http://detroit.tigers.mlb.com/news/... |
| Aug-12-09 | | Jim Bartle: The strange thing is that Porcello seems completely surprised that Youkilis came after him. It was like "Why are you doing this?" |
| Aug-12-09 | | A.G. Argent: Jim,<infield play>, also the most fun to watch. They make it look so easy. |
| Aug-12-09 | | Jim Bartle: Part of that is the amazing strength of their arms. The shortstops throw to first with no effort, making you forget how long a throw it is. But I see them screw it up, too.
Just today, Toronto mucked up the first inning against NY without committing an error: Runners on second and third, one out. Hard grounder to third, Jeter breaks for the plate, throw goes home, Jeter gets back to third safely. Bases loaded. Next batter, grounder to second, fumbled so no DP (out at first), run scores. |
| Aug-12-09 | | Jim Bartle: Sports Illustrated player poll:
WHICH OPPOSING HITTER DO YOU MOST FEAR WITH THE GAME ON THE LINE? Albert Pujols, Cardinals 1B 41%
Manny Ramirez, Dodgers LF 18%
Derek Jeter, Yankees SS 6%
Chipper Jones, Braves 3B 3%
Kevin Youkilis, Red Sox 1B 3% |
