 | | Phony Benoni: There aren't many teams that wouldn't want Kevin Youkilis on their side, for intangibles as well as skill. How can you not hustle when he's glaring at you? |
| Aug-12-09 | | Jim Bartle: Here's Carlos Pena of Arizona, hitting .213. And scoring 71 runs and driving in 74, with 31 homers. Good example that batting average isn't everything. |
Aug-12-09
 | | Phony Benoni: He's also on a pace for 200 strikeouts. At what point does he become Rob Deer? |
| Aug-12-09 | | Jim Bartle: But it seems to me he's much more productive than Rob Deer ever was. (And Deer came up as a Giant, a major prospect.) |
| Aug-12-09 | | A.G. Argent: Or Dave Kingman. |
| Aug-13-09 | | Travis Bickle: Ty Cobb

| Aug-13-09 | | playground player: <Phony Benoni, Jim Bartle> Rob Deer! Wow! I haven't thought about him in donkey's years. I remember a reporter asking Sparky Anderson about maybe getting Deer a personal hitting coach, and Sparky saying "I dunno, you could send him to Joe Gorilla for lessons and it wouldn't do any good." I think Sparky might'a been losin' it, at that point. True, batting average isn't everything, and you can hit .200 and still drive in 100 runs, as Kingman once did (but only once). But if you're striking out all the time, your teammates sure as heck don't get a chance to drive YOU in. |
| Aug-13-09 | | Jim Bartle: But getting back to Peña, he's already scored 70 runs, which is very good. Plus he's walked so much that his on-base percentage is around .350. It's all very confusing. He puts the ball in play less than half the time! |
Aug-13-09
 | | Phony Benoni: I wonder if Pena gets a lot of walks because Tampa Bay has nobody dangerous hitting behind him. Maybe the ultimate in this category was Mark McGwire in his last year, 2001. He batted .187, and got 56 hits the entire year: 23 singles, 4 doubles, no triples, 29 home runs. |

 | | Phony Benoni: <News item: Michael Vick signs a contract wit the Eagles.> Hmmm. I wonder if Philadelphia plays at Cleveland this year. |
| Aug-14-09 | | Jim Bartle: What's he going to do? Play wide receiver? Running back? |
Aug-14-09
 | | Phony Benoni: Maybe fetch errant balls during practice.
I was just imagining what would happen when he was greeted by Browns fans in "The Dog Pound". |
| Aug-14-09 | | Jim Bartle: Oops, I missed that. I suspect he's going to get a hard time everywhere on the road this year. Deservedly so. |
| Aug-14-09 | | A.G. Argent: <Deservedly so> Hear, hear. And even Eagle Fan ain't going to be very patient with the punk. |
Aug-14-09
 | | Phony Benoni: Are Eagles Fans patient with anybody?
I haven't been following the story closely, but has Vick said or done anything since his release to indicate that he hasn't learned his lesson? I suppose it's possible for even him to reform--though it looks like this is going to stick with him the rest of his life, regardless. |
| Aug-14-09 | | Jim Bartle: I was hoping he'd be on the same team with Terrell Owens... |
Aug-14-09
 | | Phony Benoni: That would probably be the only way the media spotlight wouldn't be on him. |
| Aug-14-09 | | Travis Bickle: It makes me sick a team even picked up Vick. After getting involved in the vicious "sport" of dog fighting he has shown what he's all about. Besides the obvious of pure evil he has no moral's and is cold blooded. The illegal dogfighting is all about abuse to animals. From training big ferocious dogs like pit bull's and rotweiller's who can kill people, they use on little dogs like beagles for these big dogs to learn how to kill. Besides what I mentioned above Vick and his cohorts comitted atrocity's on the dogs that were injured or couldnt fight anymore. Some dogs were slammed on concrete until dead and others were drowned! Vick should be banned for life from The NFL. But big money wins all the time and it doesnt surprise me he got re-instated. |
Aug-15-09
 | | chancho: Vick did not look repentant about his involvement in Dog fighting. He was coached to say what he said at the press conference. |
| Aug-15-09 | | playground player: Hi, everybody. It's me, Michael Vick.
Look here, I'm sincerely sorry I got caught and had to go to jail. Heck, everybody tortures animals to death, don't they? I mean, it was just a little fun. Anyways, I have paid my debt to society and now I deserve to make bajillions of dollars playing football. So why don't you all shut up about me being a bad person or whatever? <Sounds of tussle offstage: roaring and screaming.> Don't you wish Mr. Vick would get a chance to abuse great white sharks, or dinosaurs--in their natural habitat, not his? |
| Aug-15-09 | | Jim Bartle: Er, welcome to the site, Michael? Sure you've got the right sport? |
Aug-15-09
 | | Phony Benoni: Speaking of the right sport, where have the Yankees come from? They're four games ahead of the Dodgers for best record in MLB. Right now it's hard to see who can stand up to them in the post-season, especially if they get home field advantage. Tigers are still doddering along in first place in the Central. They've pitched two shutouts in a row, and will have to be nearly that good to stay on top of the division, even by default. Their offensive output in those two games has resulted from two solo home runs and an infield single. |
| Aug-15-09 | | technical draw: Hello, my name is technical draw and I am a Yankees fan. |
| Aug-15-09 | | Jim Bartle: The Yankees have their third-best record at this point since 1970. Very surprising. Watched the Giants for the first time last night, against the Mets. Absolutely no power, no hitting in general. Zito pitches great, doesn't matter. |
| Aug-15-09 | | A.G. Argent: T-Draw, that don't make you a bad person. Well........wait a minute, I'll get back to you. |
