 | | LIFE Master AJ: Probably not having adjournments is the best thing about "sudden-death" time limits. |
| Aug-26-09 | | Jim Bartle: Talking about leadoff hitters, we shouldn't forget Wade Boggs. No speed, of course, but consistently on base for ten years for the Sox, and pretty well for the Yankees afterward. I don't know if Jackie Robinson hit leadoff often, but he would certainly be in the same category. |

 | | Phony Benoni: I had forgotten how good Boggs was at getting on base. In his prime, he was good for 100+ walks a year and led the league in OBP six years out of seven. But I think you do need speed to be a prototypical lead-off hitter. By the way, I meant to bring up this game yesterday, <Travis Bickle> will enjoy seeing the Bears beat the Eagles by a field goal. http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/... Perhaps it's a good thing there is no play-by-play. |

 | | LIFE Master AJ: OK! I guess this will be a good forum to visit once the "World Series" starts! |
Aug-27-09
 | | Phony Benoni: <LIFE Master AJ> Yes, this is our own little private box seat. However, I do try to have a token chess discussion at least once a month, just to keep up appearances. I actually played in all of those 25 US Opens. As a result, I made it down to Florida three times (Hollywood 85, Jacksonville 90, Orlando 97), but never your neck of the woods. I have to admit I didn't enjoy Florida, being a humidophobe, but I imagine being there in August didn't help. And adjournments! Oh, could I tell you horror stories (none of which, thankfully, ever happened to me). |

 | | Phony Benoni: What's happened to the Dodgers? The Tigers now have a bigger lead in their division, for goodness sakes.. Are the Rockies really that good? |
| Aug-27-09 | | Jim Bartle: San Francisco writers say Colorado is loaded, though I don't know much about them beyond Tulowitski. They beat the Giants 3 of 4 last weekend, but the games were close. To me the Dodgers look like a strong team, but I guess their pitching has been slipping a bit lately. I've been watching some of the Little League World Series (OK, one game turned out to be Royals vs. Nationals, but I caught on after an inning or so), and I'm impressed by how hard some of the pitchers throw, around 75 mph. That's the equivalent of almost 100 in the majors, yet they get hit at times. |

 | | Phony Benoni: Catch this play last night?
http://minnesota.twins.mlb.com/medi... Personally, I think the runner was safe but the umpire was giving extra credit for effort. |
| Aug-27-09 | | Jim Bartle: That's like the one from the minors where the ball girl catches the foul running along the wall. Doesn't look real. Another nice one is the first baseman who fumbles a dribbler, then flips it behind his back to the pitcher for the out. Can't remember the teams. Dodgers beat the Rockies again today, 3-2. |
Aug-27-09
 | | Phony Benoni: It wasn't a dribbler, but was this the play?
http://mlb.mlb.com/media/video.jsp?... |
| Aug-27-09 | | Jim Bartle: Great play, but no, the one I saw the first baseman was on the infield grass. |
Aug-28-09
 | | Phony Benoni: http://losangeles.angels.mlb.com/me... Ho hum. Just your average 1-4-6-3 out. |
| Aug-28-09 | | Travis Bickle: Hey you sportsfans an interesting game for us Chicago fans is on Sunday night.
The Bears play The Broncos in Denver with an ironic twist. The two QB's of last year are on opposite teams, Kyle Orton and Jay Cutler. Should be fun for us. Over and Out! |
Aug-29-09
 | | Phony Benoni: <Travis Bickle> So you're expecting a lot of interceptions? |
| Aug-29-09 | | Travis Bickle: <Phony Benoni> Of course from Brian Erlacher, and company! Orton always throws alot of picks!! |
| Aug-29-09 | | Travis Bickle: Mr Benoni who is the QB of the Lions? |
Aug-29-09
 | | Phony Benoni: Mr. Bickle, that is the $64,000 question. Our Beloved Coach Schwartz has appointed Duante Culpepper to "begin" the game today. Apparently, the Lions still have no "starters", only "beginners". (Hey, we knew that!) Then Mr. 43 Million, Matthew $tafford, will come in during the seqcond quarter. But who will start (or begin) when the regular season kicks off? Well, I understand that Bobby Wade hasn't been doing much lately. Coach Schwartz, by the way, is proving a prime source of wonderful quotes. Last week he was making a point of how the Lions need to look ahead. <"We need to stop looking in the rear view mirror, and start looking in the front view mirror."> Think about it. |
| Aug-29-09 | | playground player: <Phony Benoni> It's true Wade Boggs didn't have a lot of speed. But when he came to the Yankees and I got to see him every day, I noticed that he was a very heads-up baserunner who almost never made a mistake. He certainly never seemed to get in the way of any of the faster guys behind him. He was a Dick Groat-type leadoff man--only with an added 50 points' worth of batting average and about 100 more walks! |
| Aug-29-09 | | Travis Bickle: Mr Benoni as you probably know ex Lions head coach is now The Bears Defensive Line Coach. Rod has got the D-Line all fired up with his knowledge of the game and entusiasm. Last week's game against The Giants the D-line were getting fronts they weren't prepared for by the Giants. Word is Marinelli literally drew up plays in the dirt on the sidelines which led to sacks! |
| Aug-29-09 | | Jim Bartle: The front-view mirror!! Yogi has found his successor. |
Aug-29-09
 | | Phony Benoni: <playground player> Lead-off hitters without speed--or much of anything else--<Eddie Yost>, the Walking Man from the 1950s. Top ten seasons for walks: Barry Bonds has 4, Ted Williams 3, Babe Ruth and Mark McGwire 1 each--and Eddie Yost, with 151 in 1956, a year he batted .231 with 11 home runs. In 1960, he led the league in on base percentage while batting .260. Now there was a guy with a good eye! |
| Aug-29-09 | | Travis Bickle: Didnt Pete Rose lead off at some point in his career? I seem to remember Charlie Hustle blazing to 1st base on walks. |
Aug-29-09
 | | Phony Benoni: Rose batted often hit lead-off his first two or three years. He settled into the #3 spot around 1966-67, when he became a consistent .300 hitter. |
| Aug-29-09 | | A.G. Argent: T, I think perhaps that because Rose ran to first base every bloody time he drew a walk, that you may be thinking he was Mr. Wonderful in general and ergo widely regarded as Mr. Lead-off. Personally, I admit that I always pretty much hated the guy. I give him nothing. No due whatsoever. An eternal ban from the Hall of Fame is exactly what I want. I don't even care about the gambling. The Charlie Hustle thing? Screw that. To me, everything he did and how he went about it just rubbed me the wrong way. The way he played was pretty much anamalistic. He was out to hurt people if need be. To me, he was anti-baseball. If he had been an middle linebacker, he would have made Butkus or Romanowski seem like a choir boy. There was nothing the least bit that I could admire let alone respect. He personified the Reds of the 70's which is my all-time least favorite team. If you want to place him on any sort of pedastal, design one for the greatest meathead of all time. If for no other reason, because he ran to first base every time he drew a walk which was sort of giving the finger to the other team. Belligerence personified. Which don't belong in baseball which, to me, is why he don't belong. The most deserved outcast I can think of. |
| Aug-29-09 | | A.G. Argent: Oh and by the by, Life Master Al, you don't gotta wait 'til the World Series. You can pop in most any time. Just say something like " How 'bout those (insert team here)_______? You shall become immediately accepted. |
