Richard Taylor: <Jessicafischerqueen> Thanks for nominating me. I think people overlook that I have done some good chess analysis (and some quite bad!). I would do more especially now as I check things with Fritz but it is time consuming.

One thing I think is important in analysis or chess study, is that if people (say), attempt to solve a problem, or pick a move, that they realize that whether they get it "wrong" or not doesn't matter. It is the effort of trying to find a plan etc which matters. Finding ideas is the important thing and is a great start. And it can be fun even if one is only doing it for chess enjoyment alone.

(Perhaps it is an error to measure one's results too much, just enjoy the process of thought, and ideas etc.

I sometimes study a position to try to find what a GM played and "fail", so in that case I try to memorize or practice that position or idea quite a few times until I understand it.

[In this respect tactics and positional ideas are both "learnable" - so the IQP is good example, as most strategy books cover it (Pachman's series is only one) but e.g the games of Karpov-Korchnoi (lines of the Tarrasch v the French) and some of Fischer's games will show it as well as Smyslov and others.]

Some positions are extremely difficult however. Too much analysis can sometimes be counterproductive I feel!

But chess is massively difficult as we all should know!

Jan-12-12  Nemesistic: <Once> That post of yours a few pages back about Darthstapler is really really funny, and would have been up for a nom from me in itself, but id already voted for "The Goldsby"..
