WannaBe: In case I forgot, congrats to them Lady Bruins. =)) U. Mich (69-63) won, but the last spread I saw was -6.5, so if you took UConn w/ spread, you got very lucky, if you bet on them U. Mich, I feel bad; the O/U was 148.5

WannaBe: <CIO> LOL. I remember those mems... <chancho> North by Norwest, totally agree, the audiences know that the plane scene was filmed earlier and played on a screen behind. It was still drama. Same thing with the Mt. Rushmore chase scene.

WannaBe: ¡Olé! ¡Olé! this is what I see for "¡Olé! ¡Olé!" (game of the day Mar-13-2026) I also know this issue have been around for a while, and it's not that important, in IT term, it is a level 'C', cosmetic fix. But I just wish to report it again. Can CG.com unify this ...

WannaBe: <FSR> March 11 is his birthday, and usually PoD is chosen from the birth date of the player. So unless CG.com decides to change the algorithm on how PoD is decided. We will randomly get "undesired" player(s).

perfidious: <YouRang: A player named Wade Boggs had his jersey number retired. For which team?>

It definitely was not by the Red Sox.

perfidious: On reading <Jim>'s reminiscences of Hunter, and the mention of Jenkins, it occurred to me that Bill James considered them both descendants of the Robin Roberts family of pitchers.

Don't recall everything James wrote, but, inter alia, he mentioned that they were A) right-handed, B) outstanding control pitchers with decent fastballs, but only fair breaking stuff.

Another nugget on Hunter: after his career was finished with an inauspicious end (one excellent year with Yankees and not much else for his $1.25 million), George Steinbrenner was asked whether it was worth paying Hunter all that money. The response was something to the effect that Hunter was worth every penny, as he helped restore respect to that organisation.

Apr-22-14  Shams: <WannaBe> BPA means Best Player Available. As opposed to drafting for need. One current approach is for the team to fill as many holes as they can in free agency before the draft, so they can draft BPA as much as possible. But every team drafts a least a little bit for need, even after accounting for scheme misfits (i.e. not drafting the top value player left because he's a 4-3 end and you play a 3-4).

The Falcons are contrarians. "We draft for need," their GM Thomas Dimitroff has said. "Look at our drafts." It's an interesting approach. I think the jury is still out about that team. They completely fell off the table last year, and much of that was due to horribly bad luck with injuries. But drafting for need inevitably makes your roster thin, too, so the bad luck turned into a catastrophe.

Apr-22-14  Shams: Incidentally, I'm quite excited for the draft this year because it looks like it could shake out beautifully for the Seahawks. One of their top needs is at WR, and there are so many good WRs this year that it's conceivable a guy they really like could fall to 32. That's a dream scenario when you pick late: a difference maker at a position of need falls into your lap.

Meanwhile the Rams get to double-dip in the first round AGAIN this year, and the Niners have 6 picks in the first three rounds. The division ain't getting any easier.
