WannaBe: 2016 will be Ichiro's last year (we think, or hope), I have bought tickets to the Friday April 22nd MIA/SFG game.

He is 65 hits short of 3K, and the game will be 16th of the young season. Doubt he will break 3K at that game...

Dec-28-15  Jim Bartle: 3000 hits, starting at age 28? Amazing.

What is the baseball analysts' consensus about Ichiro?

On one hand of course he had 200 hits a year for ten straight years, scored 100 runs every year. Has any other player gotten 2000 hits in his first ten years.

On the other hand 5 out of every 6 were singles, and he didn't walk much. And as a leadoff hitter generally a walk was as good as a hit, and his on-base percentage those years was usually around .370. (.356 career.) Good but not great.

Say in one year he got 220 hits and 40 walks. That's really not that much different than 180 hits and 80 walks, since he wasn't hitting very often with men in scoring position.

Then I hear comments that he was a selfish player, looking out for his batting average and hit total more than trying to win games. It seems clear he had the power to hit a lot more home runs but chose to slap singles instead. Did that help or hurt his teams?

I really don't know. Maybe I'll actually try some research.

Dec-28-15  Jim Bartle: Oops, forgot to include that Ichiro is an outstanding baserunner and was probably the best rightfielder in the majors for many years, great at chasing down balls and the best arm in the league.

I would think how good a rightfielder is not that important compared to his offense, but the evaluation of Jason Heyward rates him one of the best, based primarily on his fielding.

OhioChessFan: Solid HOF right fielder. I think he was a bit statistics oriented, but that is true of many players.

WannaBe: Okay, time for my 'Op-Ed' on the two articles' link I posted earlier on tech startups & valuation.

First, a bit background, I was fortunate enough to have been involved when this whole computer thing took off. Since my high school days during the very late 80s to have taken computer programming courses (BASIC and Pascal, then Borland C/C++)

I certainly did not anticipate or even imagined what computer as whole would become, much less the modern digital worlds with Apps and Smart Phones/watches etc...

That being said, (and I am currently watching Deadwood, I know, I am behind on certain TV watching) what is going on is really no different than gold prospecting of the old days.

You have (staked) a claim, think of that as a startup idea, borrow some money buy some tools and go digging' for gold.

Some pan out (no pun intended) and some don't. The Silicon Valley of 2016 in a way is no different than San Francisco of 1849 or Black Hills of Dakota Territory of 1870s.

You will find/have people who want to work startups to find that Google or Apple, or the next hot IPO (Uber, Lyft).

Or you can work for a solid established company, that may or may not be focused on the next hot thing, but is improving re-inventing an old thing.

(Think Cisco, or HP switches, the backbone of the internet without which packets wouldn't be routed from point A to point B half-way around the world)

At my company, few people have left to join a startup, but with my age, being a dinosaur that I am, working at a startup for half of my current pay, but have stock options is not a good idea.

Nor is the cut in pay make my living standard sustainable. I don't want to live in one house with 6 other people while coding 12+ hours a day.

I enjoy my current work/life balance and the benefit package my company have handed out to the employees. I'd be perfectly happy be the slow tortoise that marches to the finish line without trying to cash in on an IPO.

WannaBe: File this one under 'embarrassing'...

Company bought a new server

https://webobjects2.cdw.com/is/imag...

And as you can see, there is a handle to release the side cover, so you can add more hard drives, or PCI cards.

I took one look at the handle, tried it wouldn't open, search the box left and right, couldn't find a key.

That was last week before Christmas, and today, I google searched, and found out, there is no key! You can use a dime and just turn it.

WannaBe: I'll come back later and post some thoughts. But that last bishop move by black was a howler. (52... Bb8??)

I personally thought 52... Rxa7 was a must for black. 53. Kxa7 followed by black's king's march would have won the game.

But I need to spend some time and look at it and (all) the moves played.

if you are not a founder/early employee; a startup is not attractive for money. it _is_ however very attractive for experience. a great way to switch domains, and/or learn new methodologies.
