 | | WannaBe: C. Seager's 3-5 today (game in extra innings). Here's the 2016 stats: 190 hits, 40 doubles, 5 triples, 26 HR, 72 RBI, .313 BA, .371 OBP, .523 SLG, .894 OPS. He should win 2016 Cy Young, MVP, Rookie of the Year, Vezina Award, Lady Byng Trophy, Golden Ball, Golden Globe, Academy Award, Emmy, Daytime Emmy, and Billboard's top male vocal. |

 | | saffuna: <190 hits, 40 doubles, 5 triples, 26 HR, 72 RBI, .313 BA, .371 OBP, .523 SLG, .894 OPS.> That has to be one of the best seasons for a shortstop since 1950, Alex Rodriguez excepted. Ripken and Banks each had maybe three similar seasons, and Jimmy Rollins had the MVP year. Otherwise, I can't think of many. |

The Dodgers win their fourth consecutive NL West title. It is also the first time in franchise history they have advanced to the postseason in four consecutive seasons.> Well, that's all fine and dandy, how many World Series have they won in those 4 trips??? Gonna start comparing them to the Atlanta Braves, one World Series victory out of what? 10 post-seasons?? |
|
Sep-25-16
 | | saffuna: Atlanta did poorly in the World Series, but at least they did make it there in 1991, 1992, 1995, 1996 and 1999, five times in eight years. |

 | | OhioChessFan: Barry Larkin 1996:
154 hits, 32 doubles, 4 triples, 33 HR, 89 RBI, .298 BA, .410 OBP, .567 SLG, .977 OPS 12th in MVP after winning the previous year. |
|
Sep-25-16
 | | saffuna: Yikes, forgot about Larkin. Probably a couple others as well. |
|
Sep-25-16
 | | OhioChessFan: It's interesting to me the Braves usually had bullpen problems in the 90's. It was often speculated the starters were so good and worked so many innings that the relievers tended to get rusty. |
|
Sep-25-16
 | | OhioChessFan: Allan Trammell 1987:
205 hits, 34 doubles, 3 triples, 28 HR, 105 RBI, 21 SB, .343 BA, .402 OBP, .551 SLG, .953 OPS Larkin had 36 SB in 96. |

 | | WannaBe: Post-season's just different animal all together (Mr. Obvious here...) In 162 games, you get to beat up on weak teams and get to 90+ wins and 72 loses or less. Once a manager have the post-season rotation set, it's #1 v #1. Example, even in regular season, Kershaw does not have good record against MadBum. I think he is career 1-3 with 2 no decisions. (I realize this is just one example, and the sample size is too small to be anything 'conclusive'...) And Kershaw's previous post-season starts speak for themselves. It's hard to find another multi-Cy Young award winner that got slapped around like he did. Those horrible games vs StL Cardinals immediately comes to mind. |
|
Sep-25-16
 | | OhioChessFan: Looking at these numbers, it reminds me that I think the WAR statistic undervalues defense by magnitudes. If you really took it to heart, you'd stick a good hitting outfielder at SS and not worry about the loss of defense. Teams don't do that, with good reason, as they <know> the SS has a value with the glove far beyond what the stats geeks seem to think. |
|
Sep-25-16
 | | saffuna: I will agree with that. If people judged defense by going to games rather than by watching on TV (or listening or reading) they would give it much more importance. Defense looks so much more difficult in person than on TV. |
|
Sep-25-16
 | | OhioChessFan: As few games as the Reds won this year, I personally saw 4 where Billy Hamilton essentially won the game with his defense on plays that I doubt any other OF in the league could have made. For whatever reason, that just doesn't show up in the WAR numbers. |
|
Sep-25-16
 | | saffuna: I think Kershaw's poor postseason record is basically a fluke. He's a great pitcher and can pitch well in the postseason. The other big difference in the postseason is far more rest days. A team needs fewer starters. In a seven game series the #4 starter will probably start once and the #5 not at all. The game one starter might get three starts. |
|
Sep-25-16
 | | OhioChessFan: <Saf: Defense looks so much more difficult in person than on TV.> When I want to impress people how hard defense is, I try to get them on a regulation field with 90 foot baselines. Standing on 3B, it's really surprising how far a throw to 1B is. It's hard enough to get settled and make a throw on a line over there, but to make one picking a ball up on a short hop, moving right, having to sidearm it? Absolutely impossible. And the MLBers make it look easy. |
|
Sep-25-16
 | | WannaBe: <OCF> It's easy, I've seen Ozzie do it all the time, heck, he'd give the batter a 3 second head start before he even bother to shift his feet to catch the ball. He then do a summersault, cart-wheel before he throws the ball to first base. I swear!! |

 | | OhioChessFan: Robin Yount, 1982:
210 hits, 46 2B, 12 3B, 29 HR, 114 RBI, 14 SB, .331 BA, .379 OBP, .578 SLG, .957 OPS MVP of course. The OBP might be a bit low for today's voters, but huge numbers regardless. |
|
Sep-25-16
 | | saffuna: Exactly. And you see how difficult it is when you are at the stadium. You see how quickly fielders have to react and how far they have to run. You see how hard it is to field a ground ball. You see how throws have to be accurate or the ball will go bouncing around the field. Of course you see that on TV to some extent, but not the way you do when you're at the game. |

 | | WannaBe: Very fascinating, as Spock would say, final 3 games of the season for Giants, which they host Dodgers (already clinched NL West), ticket prices are out of <SIGHT>!! Even the cheap 300s section are now approaching $100 mark, for all 3 days! For as long I've tracked and followed Giants ticket prices, I've never seen anything like this for regular season. I mean Sunday's game, Section 323 are asking for $120, with all fees. It wasn't even this high when Oakland came to AT&T for interleague. And I sat in section 122!! (Must be Vin Scully...) |

 | | WannaBe: Memo to self, here's what happens when a baseball game is tied: <Dave Tuley
ESPN Staff Writer
The suspended Cubs-Pirates game has been declared a 1-1 tie by MLB. The ViewFromVegas is a straight bet is official after 5 innings (4.5 if home team leading), so money-line bets on both teams are refunds. The run line (where the favorite is -1.5 runs and the underdog is +1.5) and over/unders must go 9 innings (8.5 if home team leading) to be official for betting purposes, so those are no-action and also refunded. There was a 5-inning line on the game and that was also tied 1-1, so that's another refund, BUT the 5-inning over/under of 4 runs ended up being the only valid game wager as the under cashes.> This is the first official tie game since 2005, so the next tie-game will be 2027 or 2028... |
