Jul-03-18  morfishine: <Wannabe> Thanks for the quick update and for running this fun game!
Jul-03-18  technical draw: Well, my daughter in-law's Colombia team earns TD's coveted Olympic Freeze award. Too bad, I was hoping for a Colombian win after that last minute goal. This has been one chilly world cup.
Jul-03-18  optimal play: <morfishine: <Wannabe> Thanks for the quick update and for running this fun game!>

Yeah, fun for you!

You're coming =1st

The only people more clueless than myself are offramp, zborris8 & sodal.

And since most of my picks have now been eliminated, I have no chance to catch up.

I only have Belgium and Croatia left in the competition, nevertheless I will offer the following tips for the Quarter-Finals:

France to beat Uruguay
Belgium to beat Brazil
Croatia to beat Russia
Sweden to beat England

And let's hope they all come down to penalty shootouts which I love!

Jul-04-18  Dr Winston OBoogie: I predict Morf will win the <Wannabe World Cup>. Come on MORF!! 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧 🖕🇧🇷

What an exhilarating and energy draining game last night. It's been a long time since we won a penalty shootout, these players aren't afraid.. Unlike Southgate who missed one in the semi final of EURO96. We'll beat Sweden I'm absolutely positive of that, I just don't know about Russia/Croatia. Hopefully we'll get Brazil in the final. Come on England!!

Jul-04-18  morfishine: <Dr Winston OBoogie> This has been a terrific World Cup, probably the best I've seen since I've been watching (since 1982). The quality of play has been excellent and I think the refereeing has been very accurate

Luckily, due to my work schedule, I've been able to watch 30+ games so far, from beginning to end

Jul-04-18  Count Wedgemore: <Dr Winston OBoogie: We'll beat Sweden I'm absolutely positive of that,>

Seems like there is a long tradition in England of underestimating Scandinavian teams. They're always convinced they'll win easily! Truth is: the English track record against Scandinavian teams is rather poor. Sure, England has a good chance of winning, but it wil be close.

I don't know who to root for. Here in Norway, English football is immensely popular, and I grew up watching English league games. "Tippekampen", as we called it (translated into English: "the betting match") was on TV here every Saturday afternoon. But, I am Scandinavian, so I cannot help rooting for our Swedish brothers also.

I'm not a fan of soccer at all. I'm here for the predictions more than for the games.

And well, I should've done my research and realized that if a team has only won 5 knockout games in the last 12 WC, there's a good chance that they won't go too far this time.

Diademas: <technical draw> Sorry I ratted you out. I'll buy you a beer next time I'm on your continent.

To my defense - I think both our predictions are rather doomed. 😞

Interesting. In South America, Brazilian and Argentinian fans would NEVER cheer for each other's teams. Their rivalry translates into "the enemies of my enemy are my friends." As an Argentinian, I have Brazilian friends (most of us do) but I am almost morally obligated to cheer against Brazil! (I personally laugh at this nonsense.)

More generally, most Latin Americans don't like Argentinians. At the 1986 World Cup final between Argentina and Germany, the local Mexican fans cheered for Germany (who, btw, had eliminated them.)

Jul-05-18  Keyser Soze: Too true <fusili>. But I cheered for Argentina in 1986. Diego was unstopable and beautiful to watch.

I thought Uruguay and Argentina were the bitter rivalry in sport. It is?

Jul-05-18  morfishine: As long as your final winner is still alive, you have a chance due to this exponential point increase system

I'm also Norwegian, and growing up in the 70's we had a bit of an inferiority complex regarding Sweden. Their economy was better and their athlets like Bjørn Borg and Ingemar Stenmark won just about everything there was. Our athleets could hardly stay on their feets either on ice, snow or solid ground, and our footballteam were the laughing stock of Europe. (Their greatest feat was beating Germany in 1936. Still refered to as our golden moment.) So the sayin was: "The most important thing is not to win, but to beat the Swedes."

Today things are very much the opposite, except for our lousy football team. So we kind of wish them the best in a patronizing way.

Jul-05-18  rogge: Eh, well, the Swedes are much better in many big sports. Hockey, swimming, tennis, golf, football, volleyball, basketball, table-tennis, etc. Basically, we're good at skiing and skating. And maybe better than Swedes in cycling, athletics and chess :)

England vs Sweden? Normally I'd want them both to lose, but OK, Go Sweden :)

Thats true. But except for football and maybe hockey thats not big sports in Norway. So we don't realy care. 😉

Yes, but not at the same level as the rivalry with Brazil. I don't think Argentines will be massively cheering for France, and many will be cheering for Uruguay. And there are many family ties between Porteños (residents of Buenos Aires) and Uruguayans. No doubt Argentines will be massively cheering for Belgium, though.

Jul-05-18  Count Wedgemore: <Diademas: Thats true. But except for football and maybe hockey thats not big sports in Norway. So we don't realy care. 😉>

Exactly, LOL. Who cares about volleyball, table tennis and all that, when we've got the best chess player of all time?

Yep, no need to have an inferiority complex anymore. We're better than them..where it counts the most!
