Mar del Plata 1982

This was the 4th tournament organized and sponsored by the newspaper Clarín, and is also known as the IV Torneo Magistral Internacional de Ajedrez Clarín. The opening ceremony took place ca. half an hour before round 1 started. On behalf of Clarín spoke the Sports Minister Juan De Biase, who praised the presence of each of the players, especially the World Champion Anatoly Karpov. The tournament director Carlos Guimard invited the players to take their seats, one by one, and the first to be mentioned was Karpov, whom the public offered an enthusiastic applause. Once the players had been seated, mayor Luis Nuncio Fabrizio spoke for the General Pueyrredon* municipality, praising the effort of Clarín. Guimard explained to the public the importance of the 1st move, and at 1 pm mayor Fabrizio performed Karpov's move 1.e4.

Five of the world top 10 players participated. In addition to Karpov (#1) and Polugaevsky (#10) from Russia, these were Portisch (#4) from Hungary, Timman (#5) from Holland, and Andersson (#9) from Sweden. The Dane Bent Larsen (#16) had won the 2nd (1979) and 3rd (1980) Clarin tournaments but was on the decline. Whereas the young US champion Seirawan (#29) was on the rise. Andersson had won the 1st Buenos Aires (Clarin) (1978), and was again undefeated (1 win 12 draws).

The 30-year-old clear winner Jan Timman was also on the rise and made one of his best tournaments. The 71-year-old Argentine legend Miguel Najdorf once again proved hard to beat. Oscar Panno had to write detailed daily reports in Clarín, which must have been quite energy consuming. Braga and Garcia made GM norms, and the pan-American champion Franco from Paraguay made an IM norm.

Tournament leader: Carlos Enrique Guimard, assisted by Emilio Guindon and Mariano Varga. Appeals Committee: Karpov, Larsen and Panno, with Andersson and Portisch as substitutes. Spokesman for the tournament (to the press, radio and TV) was Jorge Rubinetti.

Tournament book: Clarín Ajedrez IV Magistral Internacional (General Pueyrredon, 42 pp. Consists of copies from the newspaper Clarín (about 45 pieces written by the players, plus other reports), with an added table). Timman wrote a piece for Schaakbulletin 172.
