May-21-12  Once: <sarayu> I applaud your sentiments, I really do, but as Ramdaz was writing back in 2003 (and hasn't been seen since 2007) I suspect he can't hear you!
May-21-12  NewLine: Yea, unless you are a ghost whisperer. And I'm not sure about that insult anyway.

The bastard, he called me a real shah!
What a terrible thing to say. Shame on him. I am definitely not a real shah.

May-21-12  sevenseaman: Its from a game that ended in a draw, whether Black managed or White allowed. I am sure you can do better.

I'll put the difficulty close to that of a Thursday puzzle.

White to play & win.

May-21-12  En prise: Please excuse my ignorance. What's a shah?
May-21-12  King Death: <Dec-16-03 Benzol: Your right Ben. I can claim to be a 2500 rated player with a mouse rated at 900. LOL.>

This is probably what my trying to play after more than 20 years away from chess would be like. Even back in 2003 it would've been pretty sad.

May-21-12  sevenseaman: <En prise> shah (or more appropriately Shah)was the king of Iran (Persia). Here it has been used as a pejorative. The allusion is to the wastefulness or prodigality associated with the obscenely rich.
May-21-12  Cardinal Fang: I scrolled down only as far as the sixth rank before solving this.

I saw the black diagonal across the Black King, figured there had to be a Bishop ranging along it, and that therefore the Queen had to be hitting c6, followed by mate from either the other Bishop going to a6, or a Rook going to b8.

May-21-12  kevin86: An interesting variation of Boden's mate-merging it with Reti's mate vs Tartakower. Here, the queen is sacrificed and the rook mates at b8.
May-21-12  Marmot PFL: <in keep rook it d7 in bag the swag bd6 looks equal instead rookd7 I>

if 13...Bd6 14 Bg5 wins material, but 13...Qg6 looks OK

May-21-12  BOSTER: In this <POTD> after 15.Qxc6 (bxc6 Rb8#) Kd8 16.Qxd7+ Kxd7 17.Ne5+ Kc8 18.Nxg6 hxg6 white is a rook up.

In this position from game 8 Anand-Gelfand

black sacr. the knight on h5 <going for green>, to take the rook on h1. But who cares about the black queen on h1, where queen has no any mobiity?

I guess, that even Anand didn't play 17.Qf2 trapping the queen , black game was lost.

May-21-12  fokers13: Sorry if someone has already pointed it out but instead of Qxd7+(followed by Ne5+) i like quite a bit better the immediate Ne5! and if bxc6+ Nxc6+ Ke8 Rb8+ Rd8 Rxd8#.

Better for black is probably Rc7 but Qxc7+ Kxc7 Nxg6+ is curtains imo.

Not that it matters all the variations are winning honestly.

HeMateMe: Gamboa was rated around 2000. I guess he hadn't read any tactics books, of late.
May-21-12  dragon player: Monday, so a queen sac:

15.Qxc6+ bxc6
16.Rb8#

but what if 15...Kd8? This is your only move then:
16.Rxb7 Rxb7
17.Qxb7 Qxg2
18.Rf1

and white probably gets away with an extra piece, but I don't trust this.

Time to check.

----------

I didn't see the Ne5+ idea, but this wins as well I think.

1/1

May-21-12  Once: I think that's where we get the word checkmate from - shah mat. The king is dead.
May-21-12  dzechiel: White to move (15?). Material even. "Very Easy."

White picks up a piece after

15 Qxc6+

Black cannot recapture on c6 as after

15...bxc6 16 Rb8#

is checkmate. This has got to be it.

May-21-12  Patriot: <sevenseaman> <15. Qxc6+ Kd8 16. Rxb7 Rxb7 17. Qxb7 looks to be the right procedure, whatever Black chooses. No?>

I think <LoveThatJoker> hit upon the best procedure: 15.Qxc6+ Kd8 16.Qxd7+ Kxd7 17.Ne5+ and simplifying. Usually I don't bother checking lines where one side declines a sacrifice, except when pieces are still hanging or some type of threat is still present. Then it becomes worthwhile to calculate.

May-21-12  e4 resigns: What about 6.fxg7?
Then 6...Bxg7 7.Pxc3 leaves white a pawn up.
Or 6...cxb2 7.gxh8-Q wins almost instantly.
Am I missing something?

Of course I saw 15.Qxc6+. Who wouldn't, on a Monday? But after 15...Kd8 I was considering 16.Ne5 instead of 16.Rxb7 or 16.Qxd7+. And that would indeed be very strong if it just weren't for the little detail of 16...Qb1+.

So my question is: Why didn't Benjamin castle earlier? In this position:

16.Ne5 would be sheer genius.

May-21-12  1stboard: Black needed to play 14 Bd6 instead of Qg6 .........
May-21-12  TheBish: J Benjamin vs N Gamboa, 1995

White to play (15.?) "Very Easy"

Funny, but I was solving this without my glasses (to make it more challenging), and I immediately looked at the queen sac, but I was looking for the light-squared bishop to follow up with Ba6+ (as in Boden's mate), but then I realized that not only was there no light-squared bishop, but that wouldn't mate anyway! After opening my eyes, I noticed the other bishop, which works much better here.

15. Qxc6+! Kd8

Or 15...bxc6 16. Rb8#.

16. Rxb7 with an easy win.

May-21-12  zb2cr: Sorry <fokers13>, but as <Phony Benoni> pointed out, 16. Ne5 is not a good move. Black uncorks an intermediate move of his own, 16. ... Qxb1+; 17. Ke2, Qc2+; 18. Kf3, bxc6 and Black winds up at least a Queen ahead.
May-22-12  King Death: <Once: I think that's where we get the word checkmate from - shah mat. The king is dead.>

As far as I know this is true.

Aug-25-12  Cemoblanca: 14...Qg6???? ;0)

Nice joke Nelson! Very nice! LOL!!!

Aug-25-12  Cemoblanca: By the way Nelson: You've lost to the prototype of "Deep Blue" my friend! So keep smiling! ;0)
