| Jan-08-06 | | radu stancu: <franksp> If you're talking about 12.Bxf6, then black can safely play: 12...Bxf6 13.Qxd6 Bxc3 14.bxc3 and black has three pawns up for grabs: a2 (not very wise, the queen kind of gets out of the action), c3 (even game) and e4: 14...Bxe4! 15.Qe5 <(15.Rxe4 Rad8 16.Rxe6 Rxd6 17.Rexd6 Qxc3 and as they say, the rest is a matter of technique ;))> 15...Qxe5 16.Nxe5 Bxc2 with a small advantage for black. |

Better than the Smith-Morra gambit or other odd anti-Sicilian lines, and they are still playable. Most people prefer castling long, though, as it saves a tempo if you want a rook on d1 anyway. If you don't believe me about the solidness of this opening line, check out Pete Tamburro's "Openings for Amatuers" lecture series on it at ICC; he really liked it, as did many of his students. Gave me my first tournament win, against an experienced Sicilian player ;) |

20; so much for avoiding main-line Najdorf and Dragon theory! An interesting example of the line is the game Tal-R Byrne, Biel IZ 1976; I got caught out the same way as Byrne in Glueck-A Shaw, Boston 1983, through not being familiar with all the nuances. |
