Feb-12-05  franksp: 15 Bxf6 - At last this capture is made but, for quite a while, White could have made this capture and forced a pawn recapture as the Bishop was needed at e7 to guard the d6 Pawn. So why not earlier? Breaking up K-side Pawns did not matter? The Pawn on d6 could not be captured for some reason?
Jan-08-06  itz2000: The Openning Called Scillian Nadjorf Varation and not only Scillian.

:S

Jan-08-06  GaryCoyotov: I thought the Nadjorf variation supposed 4 Nxd4 and ...a6 at some point... Am I wrong ?
Jan-08-06  radu stancu: <franksp> If you're talking about 12.Bxf6, then black can safely play: 12...Bxf6 13.Qxd6 Bxc3 14.bxc3 and black has three pawns up for grabs: a2 (not very wise, the queen kind of gets out of the action), c3 (even game) and e4: 14...Bxe4! 15.Qe5 <(15.Rxe4 Rad8 16.Rxe6 Rxd6 17.Rexd6 Qxc3 and as they say, the rest is a matter of technique ;))> 15...Qxe5 16.Nxe5 Bxc2 with a small advantage for black.
Jan-08-06  radu stancu: <GaryCoyotov> No, you're not, I don't know what itz2000 is talking about... :-?
Apr-14-06  YoungFischerSnapper: 4. Qxd4 An impatient Josh Waitzkin-esque move that costs White the game.
Apr-14-06  YoungFischerSnapper: I could imagine Andreas' jaw dropping as Fischer moves his Queen all the way to the other side of the board with 13... Qh5. Heheh, Andreas tried to decline the Sicilian by playing 4. Qxd4 but still couldn't get away from Fischer's fine playing.
Apr-03-08  GibGezr: <YoungFischerSnapper: 4. Qxd4 An impatient Josh Waitzkin-esque move that costs White the game.>

Actually...no. 4.Qxd4 is a fine, solid line against the Sicilian. Better than the Smith-Morra gambit or other odd anti-Sicilian lines, and they are still playable. Most people prefer castling long, though, as it saves a tempo if you want a rook on d1 anyway. If you don't believe me about the solidness of this opening line, check out Pete Tamburro's "Openings for Amatuers" lecture series on it at ICC; he really liked it, as did many of his students. Gave me my first tournament win, against an experienced Sicilian player ;)

Apr-03-08  depraved: In the 1980s, I had at least two games as Black in this 4.Qxd4 line and one as White- it isn't bad at all, but has variations stretching beyond move 20; so much for avoiding main-line Najdorf and Dragon theory!

An interesting example of the line is the game Tal-R Byrne, Biel IZ 1976; I got caught out the same way as Byrne in Glueck-A Shaw, Boston 1983, through not being familiar with all the nuances.

Jul-16-09  technical draw: Fearless Fischer puts his Queen in line with the enemy rook, 20..Qd6. "Go ahead , make my day"!
Oct-12-16  zydeco: Why not 20.Nxe4?
Oct-13-16  Retireborn: <zydeco> Probably White saw that 20.Nxe4 Bxe4 21.Qxe4 Qxe4 22.Rxe4 e5 would cost him a piece.

21.Rxe4 is better, but after 21...Qd5 (Houdini) the pawn on a2 hangs and ...e5 is still a threat; still, this would still be preferable to what happens in the game.
