Kibitzer's Corner
Jul-30-05  Koster: Maybe this draw clinched 1st place for Fischer. Otherwise it's surprising to see him trade queens on move 7 with a much lower rated player.
Aug-02-05  Resignation Trap: <<Koster>> <Maybe this draw clinched 1st place for Fischer.>

As the old tattered rope said, "I'm a frayed knot."

This was the round four game of an eight-round swiss with 161 players, played July 4-7 1963. It was also the only game which Fischer didn't win.

Here are Fischer's games in chronological order from this tournament: Round one : Fischer vs J Fuller, 1963

Round two: A Reinhard vs Fischer, 1963

Round three: Fischer vs N Leopoldi, 1963

Round four: Fischer vs. Poschel [here]

Round five: Fischer vs R Finegold, 1963

Round six: Bisguier vs Fischer, 1963

Round seven: Fischer vs D Byrne, 1963

Round eight: Berliner vs Fischer, 1963

Aug-02-05  Resignation Trap: In the September 1963 issue of Chess Life, Fischer had this to say:

"The players at the Open were surprisingly strong. I was expecting twenty move-crushers, but it didn't happen. In fact, the opposition was keen enough that I consider 5 or 6 of 8 of my games played there to be superior to any games played in the Piatigorsky Tournament with the exception of Najdorf's win over Keres."

See: Najdorf vs Keres, 1963

Fischer then annotated his wins over Berliner and Reinhard.

Dec-25-11  King Death: <...In the September 1963 issue of Chess Life, Fischer had this to say: "...the opposition was keen enough that I consider 5 or 6 of 8 of my games played there to be superior to any games played in the Piatigorsky Tournament with the exception of Najdorf's win over Keres.">

This should be taken with the same grain of salt as "The King's Gambit is busted..."

What's funny about it is that if Nakamura had made these statements, he'd be getting roasted on a spit for being arrogant.

Feb-22-25  wabrown: I grew up in Michigan when Paul Poschel was our finest player. He was 2350 or so when ratings were not inflated. I heard him talk about this game and he said that he planned to do exactly what happened. Lock up the board, give Fischer no chance to open the game and thats exactly what happened.
Feb-23-25  Petrosianic: <This should be taken with the same grain of salt as "The King's Gambit is busted...">

And that Black is better after 1. Nf3 Nf6 2. g3 g6 3. Bg2 Bg7 4. O-O O-O.

<What's funny about it is that if Nakamura had made these statements, he'd be getting roasted on a spit for being arrogant.>

Fischer was considered arrogant at the time. Keres called out this exact statement as an example of Fischer's lack of objectivity. Read "The Selfmate of Bobby Fischer", in July 1964 for what Americans thought about him. At the time people thought Fischer was a bad sport, afraid to play in the interzonal, et cetera. But a lot is forgiven and forgotten when you win the world title. If Nakamura wins it while it still means anything, he won't be arrogant either.
