Apr-23-06  RandomVisitor: considering that it is 3:15 here on the east coast, looks like its time to call it an evening...
Apr-23-06  SJP: I must admit I did not get the conclusion of the game but instead thought of 30...Qd7, giving:

1) 31. Nxa7 Bxf2 32. Qxf2 Rxf2+ 33. Kg1 Ree2 34. Kh1 Rxg2 35. Bxd5 Qxd5 36. c4 Rh2+ 37. Kg1 Qg2# 1a) If 33. Kxf2, 33...Qf5+ 34. Kg1 g3 35. Rf1 Re1 36. Bc4 Rxf1+ 37. Bxf1 Qf2+ and mate next move.

2) A better defence: 31. Re1 Qxc6 32. Re2 Rxe2 33. Kxe2 Qb5+ 34. c4 Rxf2+ 35. Qxf2 Qe8+ 36. Kf1 Bxf2 37. Kxf2 d4 and Black wins the endgame.

Apr-23-06  percyblakeney: <On 31.Qd3 Re4 32.Bxd5 Rf4 white could try 33.Be4 because best play would require the hard to find Rxf2+ 34.Kg1 Bh2+! 35.Kxh2 R5f3!>

35. Kh1 ought to be better, after R5f4 (R5f3 Qa6) 36. Re1 g3 37. Bf3 it's hard to find a clearly winning line with the help of Shredder. If black tries for example 37. ... Qf8 white can play 38. Qb3 Rxh4 39. Qe3 and survival doesn't look impossible.

On 31. Qd3 Rxf2+ 32. Kxf2 g3+ 33. Kf1 I doubt there is any immediate win for black.

Apr-23-06  EmperorAtahualpa: Just like yesterday, I completely missed this puzzle. :(

Open Defence: I got as far as ♕g4 but unless I am mistaken after 34♗e6 can't Black play ♕xh4 for which there seems to be no defence to ♕h2# unless White gies up the ♕ ?
Apr-23-06  LauraPalmer: I wouldn't have got this if had looked until monday.
Apr-23-06  jmelton: I was almost convinced Black could still win after White's best defense, 31.Qd3, but after more time than I wanted to spend going through various lines with Fritz, I now think that with best play White can not only hold, but come out with the better position. Here's the analysis:

31...Re4 looks tough to beat, but with best play White actually comes out on top:

A) 31...Re4 32.Bxd5 (32.Kg1 g3 33.Be3 Qg4; 32.g3 Rf3 33.Qa6 Qc7 34.Bxd5 Bxg3 35.Bxe4 Rxf2+ 36.Kg1 Bxh4 ), and now Black's best try is probably:

A1) 32...Ref4, but White has:
A1a) 33.Be4 Rxf2+ 34.Kg1 Bh2+ 35.Kh1 (35.Kxh2 R5f3 36.Qa6 Qc7+ 37.Ne5 fxe5 38.Kg1 Rf4 39.Re1 exd4 ) 35...Qh6 36.g3 R2f3 37.Ne7 Rxd3 38.Nxf5 Qd2 39.Bxd3 Bxg3 40.Nxg3 Qf2 41.Rg1 Qxd4 42.b3, and seems to have the better of it.

But if White doesn't play accurately, Black will gain the upper hand:

A1b) 33.Re1 33...Rxf2+ 34.Kg1 Qh6 35.Re8+ (35.g3 Qd2 ) 35...Bf8 36.c4 Rf1+ 37.Qxf1 Rxf1+ 38.Kxf1 Qc1+ 39.Kf2 Kg7 40.b3 Bd6 41.Ke2 Qc2+ 42.Ke3 f5 ;

Black's other main try on move 32 is g3, but it doesn't seem to work:

A2) 32...g3 33.Bxe4 Rxf2+ 34.Ke1;

So what are Black's main alternatives to 31...Re4? Perhaps the best line for Black is:

B) 31...Qd7 32.Kg1 Rxf2 33.Kxf2 Qxc6 34.Qf5 Bc7 35.Bxd5 Qd6, and Fritz says slight edge for White.

In the other main alternative that has been mentioned, 31...Rxf2+, Black can probably hold but it's not easy; e.g.:

C) 31...Rxf2+ 32.Kxf2 g3+ 33.Kf1 Qg4 34.Re1 Qf4+ 35.Qf3 Qxf3+ 36.gxf3 g2+ 37.Kxg2 Rxe1 38.Nxa7 Bf4 39.Nc8 Bc1 40.Nxb6 Bxb2 41.Nxd5 Bxd4 42.c3 Be5 43.f4 Bd6 44.Kf3 h5 45.Nxf6 Rf1+ 46.Ke3 Rxf4 47.Nxh5 Rxh4 48.Nf6 Ba3 49.Ne4 Kg7 50.Kd4 Kf8 51.Bd5 Rh7 52.c4 Ra7 53.c5 Ke7 54.Bb3 Bb2+ 55.Kc4 Kd7 56.Kd5 Ba3 57.Nc3 Ra5 58.Nb5 Ke7 59.Kc6 Bb4 60.a4 Ra6+ 61.Kb7 Rg6 62.c6 Ba5 63.Ka6 Bd8 64.Bd5 Rg1 65.Kb7=

LIFE Master AJ: As several have already pointed out ... taking on d6 was a slight error, 31.Qd3 was much better.
Apr-23-06  dakgootje: < I got as far as Qg4 but unless I am mistaken after 34Be6 can't Black play Qxh4 for which there seems to be no defence to Qh2# unless White gies up the Q ?> The point of 34. Be6 is that black doesnt have a mate after Qxh4 anymore because of Bh3 blocking it ;-)
Apr-23-06  Marmot PFL: Even after the better 31 Qd3 black should win Rxf2+ 32 Kxf2 g3+ 33 Kf1(or g1) Qg4. If 34 Bxd5 Qxh4 wins, while 34 Re1 is met by Qf4+ 35 Qf3 Qxf3+ 36 gxf3 g2+ 37 Kxg2 Rxe1 38 Nxa7 Rd1 with much better ending. White should have moved the King off the f file (and out of the pin) much sooner.
Apr-23-06  Marmot PFL: Looking at the ending more, while black is better I think white should draw. Not bad for Bird's Defence.

Apr-23-06  jmelton: In the 31.Qd3 Rxf2+ line, here's what I got Fritz to come up with after another look:

C) 31...Rxf2+ 32.Kxf2 g3+ 33.Kf1 Qg4 34.Re1 Qf4+ 35.Qf3 Qxf3+ 36.gxf3 g2+ 37.Kxg2 Rxe1 38.Nxa7

C1) 38...Rd1 39.Nc8 Bc7 40.c3 Rd2+ 41.Kf1 Rxb2 42.Ne7 (42.h5 Rh2 43.Ne7 Rxh5 44.Nxd5 Bd8 45.Kf2 Rh2+ 46.Ke3 h5 47.c4 h4 48.Nf4 h3 ) 42...Bg3 43.Nxd5 Bxh4 44.Nxb6 Rf2+ 45.Kg1 Rxf3 46.Nd5 Be1 47.c4 Rf2 48.c5 Rb2 49.c6 Ba5 50.Nxf6 Bb6 51.Kf1 Bxd4 52.Nd5 Rf2+ 53.Ke1 Rf8 54.c7 Be5 55.Bd1 Rc8 56.Bg4 Rxc7 57.Nxc7 Bxc7=

C2) 38...Bf4 39.Nc8 Bc1 40.Nxb6 Bxb2 41.Nxd5 Bxd4 42.c3 Be5 43.f4 Bd6 44.Kf3 h5 45.Nxf6 Rf1+ 46.Ke3 Rxf4 47.Nxh5 Rxh4 48.Nf6 Ba3 49.Ne4 Kg7 50.Kd4 Kf8 51.Bd5 Rh7 52.c4 Ra7 53.c5 Ke7 54.Bb3 Bb2+ 55.Kc4 Kd7 56.Kd5 Ba3 57.Nc3 Ra5 58.Nb5 Ke7 59.Kc6 Bb4 60.a4 Ra6+ 61.Kb7 Rg6 62.c6 Ba5 63.Ka6 Bd8 64.Bd5 Rg1 65.Kb7=

Apr-23-06  aazqua: Suprisingly easy. The queen is (emarrassingly) serving as a stopper for the pawn and the pin, so use the bishop to deflect and get a rook on the 7th and a very dangerous attack. Be6 is pretty pathetic for black, although there doesn't seem to be much to be done to stop the queen. Neither one of these players looks any good.

OBIT: I don't have anything insightful to say about this game, but I'd bet it holds the record for greatest discrepancy in the length of the last names.
Apr-23-06  Jim Bartle: Actually I think she hadn't added the "Ivanchuk" by 1989.
Apr-23-06  kevin86: Black is able to establish two rooks on the seventh-not much more need be said...
Apr-23-06  RandomVisitor: <jmelton>in the 31...Re4 line, A1 section Black has 35...R5f4, which is an improvement and stands better. 36.Kxh2 is met by R4f3.
Apr-23-06  AniamL: Looks like L Oll's play lolled a bit in this one.
Apr-23-06  nateinstein: I threw the Qd3! line into chessmaster, it can't find any immediate win, and perhaps its just a drawn game. But at the least, it still the best move for black, just not sure its a winning one. White has to play exact for the rest of the game though.
Apr-23-06  Greginctw: <To claim success today, you should have seen at the very least, 33...Qg4 (or a move earlier, with 32...Qg4).> I dont know about that. I stopped at 31. G3 after looking at all of whites 32nd moves and seeing that none offered him any tricks or prospects and that black had developed and overwhelming position. I think alot of people on here probably did the same.
Apr-23-06  Fezzik: Hey, there was some great analysis of the positions arising from the 31.Qd3 line!

Chessgames.com, do we get credit if we saw the game continuation but weren't sure if there was a win after Qd3?

Apr-26-06  patzer2: Black's 30...Bd6!? is a true positional sacrifice, which is good for at least equality if White declines with 31. Qd3! and a winning attack if he accepts with 31. Qxd6?? g3!

Yes, especially since we're being graded and these puzzles determine your position within the unspoken social hierarchy within <CG.com>.
