Oct-30-05  ughaibu: The Ruy Lopez has the problem of weakening white squares on the kingside. See also P Guillaume vs O Hardy, 1962 Hoffmann vs Lambert, 1947

Open Defence: <Ughaibu> <The Ruy Lopez has the problem of weakening white squares on the kingside.> I agree, however if White can exploit the center then any flank attack by Black will be premature
Oct-22-06  J M: Geller should of played 12...Qd3! for a faster mate!
Jan-25-09  nosuchdude: The position after 12...Qd3! instead of the game move 12...Ne2+ was seen in the famous 1968 movie "2001: A Space Odyssey", in which the supercomputer HAL 9000 defeats astronaut Frank Poole after the further moves 13.Bd1 Bh3 14.Qxa6? Bxg2 15.Re1 Qf3. At this point HAL tells Poole "I'm sorry Frank, I guessed you missed it. Queen to bishop three, bishop takes queen, knight takes bishop mate." Frank resigns without questioning HAL's analysis. However, by "queen to bishop three" HAL obviously meant bishop six, and HAL does not mention that White can prolong his resistance by not taking the queen. Some have taken this as a foreshadowing of HAL's deception of the crew or imminent mental breakdown.

Jun-30-14  Dr. J: 18 Qe3. Then what?
Sep-18-14  Ke2: I guess Geller saw 2001.
Sep-18-14  Ke2: Or maybe not as he didn't play Qd3.
