Dec-01-09  WhiteRook48: the fifty move rule was not reached, but it is highly defensible for at least 12 more moves

LIFE Master AJ: White is justified in trying to play for the win.

Black plays excellent defense, and eventually decides to give Black the draw that he has earned.

May-12-14  Howard: So according to the six-piece you-know-what, did Korchnoi miss a win anywhere ?

offramp: Only a fool breaks the 50-move rule.
May-12-14  siggemannen: Pretty ice-cold defence by black!
May-12-14  RookFile: From what I've read, you should always play out Rook and Bishop vs. Rook. Every time. Yes, it's a draw, but he slightest mistake and black is dead.

perfidious: Not even debatable; the only time I ever had that ending, my opponent suffered before he made the draw.

Never had the extra piece in R+N vs R, but I would also display my Missouri roots in that ending.

The main defensive point in R+N v R is to pin the N to the king.

perfidious: <offramp> Y'all might say I am familiar: twice I had to defend with the rook. First time, I blundered in sight of the fifty-move haven; the second, I held the draw without difficulty in a blitz game against a 2500 player.
May-12-14  Marmot PFL: How many times was this game adjourned?
May-14-14  Howard: Did Korchnoi miss a win anywhere in this endgame ?!??!

Tabanus: <Marmot PFL: How many times was this game adjourned?> Two, according to Augusta Chronicle.

According to Botvinnik's book Candidates' Matches 1974, the game ended 95...Re2 96.Rc7 Rf2 97.Be6 Rd2 98.Ke5 Ke8 99.Rc5 Rf2 1/2-1/2. Augusta Chronicle also has 99 moves, ending 99.Bd5 Rf2

Aug-28-14  Howard: I'm too lazy right now to look in the tablebases, but one has to suspect that Korchnoi almost certainly overlooked at least one forced win here.

Retireborn: <Howard> There were no missed wins in this version of the game, according to tablebase.

Chessbase Big Database 2002 does have a slightly different version of the game where Black plays 62...Rc8 instead of 62...Rd8+. Then 63...Kf3 is indeed a blunder allowing an instant win with 64.Ba6+.

I think it's unlikely the players would have missed that though. Notation errors in Big Database 2002 aren't unusual.
