Kibitzer's Corner
Jan-28-05  Whitehat1963: Player of the day sees clearly through the complications and beats Marshall.

Sep-03-23  Brenin: Looking at the position and the names of the players, I assumed that it was Black to move, and wondered what was so puzzling about Qxe5. Then I realised that it was White to move, and found the quiet 17 e3, attacking the N on f4 and threatening Qf3 or Qg4+. For example, 17 ... Bxg2 18 Qg4+ Kb8 19 Rfd1 Qxe5 20 exf4 winning the B, or 17 ... Qxe5 18 exf4 Qxf4 19 Bxh3+, or 17 ... Nxg2 18 Qf3 as in the game. Marshall's resignation was lamentably late.
Sep-03-23  agb2002: White has an extra knight.

Black threatens Qxe5 and B(N)xg2.

The white queen would like to go to f3. This suggests 17.e3:

A) 17... Qxe5 18.exf4, with the double threat fxe5 and Bxh3+, wins more material.

B) 17... Nxg2 18.Qf3

B.1) 18... Qxe5 19.Qxh3+ and 20.Qxg2.

B.2) 18... Qh6 19.Nf5 (19.Nxf7 Rhf8 might create complications) 19... Bxf5 20.Qxf5+ Qe6 (20... Kb8 21.Nxf7 looks much stronger now) 21.Qxe6+ fxe6 22.Kxg2 with a piece up.

C) 17... Bxg2 18.Qg4+ Kb8 19.Rfd1

C.1) 19... Qxe5 20.Nc6+ Bxc6 21.Bxe5 wins decisive material.

C.2) 19... Ka8 20.exf4 keeps the piece.

Sep-03-23  King.Arthur.Brazil: If W play 17. Nxf7?? Qg6 and Marshall's attack will be dangerous. Another try: 17. Nb5 Qh6 18. Nxa7+ Kb8 19. Qa4 Rd6 20. Nec6+ bxc6 21. Nxc6+ Rxc6 22. Bxc6 Qg5+ 23. Kh1 Bg2+ 24. Bxg2 Qxg2#.

Then, let's see: 17. Nb5 Qh6 18. Qa4 Rd6 19. Nxa7+ Kb8 (Kd8 20. Nxf7#) 20. Nec6+ bxc6 21. Bxc6? Qg5+ 22. Kh1 Bg2+ 23. Bxg2 Qxg2#. Or 20. Nac6+ bxc6 21. Nxc6+ Kb7 22. Qa7+ Kc8 23. Qa8+ Kd7 24. Ne5+ Ke6 25. Qe4... this line seems correct.

Sep-03-23  mel gibson: I didn't know.

Stockfish 16 says:

17. e3

(17. e3 (e2-e3 Bh3xg2 Qd1-g4+ Kc8-b8 Rf1-d1 Qd6xe5 e3xf4 Qe5-e4 Qg4xg2 Qe4xf4 Qg2-g3 Qf4xg3+ f2xg3 Be7-f6 Nd4-b5 Bf6xc3 Nb5xc3 Kb8-c8 Kg1-f2 a7-a6 Rd1xd8+ Rh8xd8 Ra1-d1 Rd8-e8 Rd1-d3 b7-b6 Rd3-f3 Re8-e7 Rf3-e3 Re7-d7 Re3-e8+ Kc8-b7 Kf2-e3 ) +4.56/50 732)

score for White +4.56 depth 50.
