Apr-19-06  Fezzik: Boy, who was this Gabriel Wood fellow? Didn't he even ask himself why Najdorf had 31...Bd7? Sheesh.

Does anyone know anything about this Barcelona tournament of 1946?

Apr-19-06  ckr: The Knight move uncovers two mate threats and white cannot counter both.
Apr-19-06  backyard pawn: <ckr> exactamundo! Black's queen can mate at h2, or his rook can mate at f1. Even I saw that one. : )
Apr-19-06  dhotts: What's wrong with 30.Rxa5?
Apr-19-06  ckr: <Fezzik> He thought 31...Bd7 was to clear the way for 32...Qc6+. So he blindly self-mates with Kh1.
Apr-19-06  blingice: After five minutes of cluelessness, I solved it in a millisecond. No, a millisecond is to a second as what I solved it in is to a millisecond.
Apr-19-06  Ashram64: I spent 5min looking for attack for white..and finally gave up and clicked the answer..and i saw the score is 0-1!

so quickly i stop the loading and got the move in few seconds! ridiculous >.< once again.. RTFQ (read the "friendly" question) :)

Apr-19-06  dzechiel: Saw it in about 10 seconds.
Apr-19-06  Infohunter: <blingice: ...a millisecond is to a second as what I solved it in is to a millisecond.> That would be a microsecond.
Apr-19-06  JustAFish: As this is a puzze, 32... Ng4 was seen more or less right away. The biggest challenge I had to deal was assuring myself that 33 g3 was not a serious challnege to the move. Simply taking the pawn, 33...Qxg3, seems to lead to mate in every line.
Apr-19-06  ppm: <JustAFish: As this is a puzze, 32... Ng4 was seen more or less right away. The biggest challenge I had to deal was assuring myself that 33 g3 was not a serious challnege to the move> 33 g3? white is at least losing his queen.

An Englishman: Good Evening: Once you realize that the mere existence of the Nf6 hurts Black's position, it becomes a simple matter of finding the best way of getting rid of it.
Apr-19-06  prinsallan: Missed this ,(
Apr-19-06  HelaNubo: Like <Ashram64>, I looked for a win for White, wondering that we have such a difficult puzzle so early in the week. Then I spotted that black is Najdorf, that the first rank is weak in f1 and that the obvious winning move is Ng4, all simultaneously;-)
Apr-19-06  yataturk: <<<<<>>>>HelaNubo: Then I spotted that black is Najdorf<<<<>>>>>

What exactly do you mean by this (i.e., what exact pattern are you talking about)?

Apr-19-06  midknightblue: I couldnt find a win for white. When am I gonna start reading the instructions properly?
Apr-19-06  EmperorAtahualpa: Needed 10 seconds for this! Was first considering Qh2+ and Bxh6.
Apr-19-06  dakgootje: few seconds to see the move, as it was the first i looked at (pretty easy if you see whites weak backrank). After that it took me about 15 seconds finding a possible counter-move as i thought it was too easy, yes even too easy for wednesday... (no offence to those who missed it)
Apr-19-06  SJP: <dakgootje>
This did seem too quick for a Wednesday
Apr-19-06  martr3000: Black Q has h2 covered, how to get that rook to f1...? Simple - move the Knight out of the way...
Apr-19-06  moppa: martr3000, The knight has to go to g4, becouse of 33.Qxd6

...This took me about fifteen minutes. First I started to look at a knight move that covers h2, but even thinking about that and Ng5 I - for some reason - didn't see it.

God I felt stupid after those 15 minutes.

Apr-19-06  WarmasterKron: I started looking at at Bxh3 before I saw the backrank weakness and the knight move. Pretty straightforward.
Apr-19-06  Richerby: I saw 32... ♘g4 very quickly but didn't spot the discovered attack on White's queen (duh!) so spent quite a while convincing myself that 33.g3 ♕xg3 is winning. Actually, since that checkmates (as far as I can see), 33... ♕xg3 is better than 33... ♕xg6 in that position.
Apr-19-06  NotABanker: 32. Kh1 was a gift. I wonder how long it took Najdorf to play 32. ...Ng4.
Apr-19-06  Halldor: When solving puzzles I find it useful just to try spotting some ideas in the position for possible combinations to begin with - instead of trying out individual moves. Here is a lot of such stuff: vulnerable first rank, unguarded queen indirectly attacked, etc. So consequently I saw that the knight was in the way as <An Englishman> points out, and then all these ideas combine easily and make a beautiful combination.
