1. e4 {Notes by S. Tinsley} e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bb5 g6 {The
well-informed chess editor of the 'Times Democrat' (New
Orleans) says of this opening that "if not actually the
invention of Mr. A. P. Barnes, of New York, it was at least
first brought into prominent notice by him in the Canadian
"Spectator", July 1880, and subsequently in an analytical
article of some length and importance in "Brentano's Monthly',
vol. i. 1881, p. 73. It is somewhat singular that the
"Handbuch" wholly overlooks this fact in its last edition, as
well we believe as the actual merits of the defence, which, by
the way, is highly esteemed and was almost persistently
adopted by Pillsbury at the Hastings Meeting".} 4. d4 exd4
5. Nxd4 Bg7 6. Be3 Nf6 7. Nc3 O-O 8. f3 {The double object of
preventing Ng4 presently, and the exchange of Knight for
Bishop is thus accomplished, but at the expense of a very weak
centre of Pawns.} Ne7 {Preventing an inopportune exchange by
White, who might possibly have taken the Piece earlier without
much harm. Black is also now ready to assail the weak central
position by d5 etc.} 9. O-O c6 10. Bd3 d5 11. Nde2 {Supposing
now e5 instead --an obvious move--then 11...Ne8 12 f4 c5, with
a fine attack.} dxe4 12. fxe4 {Allowing the very evil, Ng4,
which was previously guarded against. Bxe4 was probably a
lesser evil; Nxe4 clearly loses his b-pawn.} Ng4 13. Qd2 Qd6
{Attention may be directed to the series of very forcible
moves by which Black wins this game. This is one. He gains
time by a threat of immediate mate, which can only be defended
by White compromising his King’s position.} 14. g3 Qe5
15. Rae1 Nxe3 16. Qxe3 Nf5 17. Qf3 Nd4 18. Nxd4 Qxd4+ 19. Kg2
Qb4 20. {As there appears no means of saving the valuable Pawn
this is the best course.} e5 Qxb2 21. Bc4 {The game is almost
hopeless, as another Pawn must go at once, and this is the
best chance.} Qxc2+ 22. Rf2 Qf5 23. Qe3 Qh3+ 24. Kg1 Be6
25. Be2 {It would be bad to open the file by Bxe6. Also his
e-pawn is weak when the attack comes. Bf1 seems better.} Qh6
26. Rf4 Qg5 27. Bd3 Rad8 28. Qf3 {Presumably a trap, but
Black’s reply demonstrates that the Pawn may safely be
taken. The whole game, in fact, seems to show that one player
sees a little clearer and further than the other, and is
mercilessly exact.} Bxe5 29. h4 Bd4+ 30. Kh2 {Rxd4 is answered
effectively by Qc5.} Qa5 0-1
