 | | An Englishman: Good Evening: The big variation consisted of 32.hxg3,Qh1+; 33.Kxh1,Rh4+; 34.Kg1,Rh1X. Nice variation upon a well known theme. Why didn't White play 19.Nc7? |
|
Sep-26-19 | | Walter Glattke: Good morning, 32.hxg3 Qxg3+ 33.Rg2 Qh3 34.Bc5 Re1+ 35.Kf2 Rxc1 36.Rxg6+ hg6 37.Rxc1 -++ 34.Rh2 Rg4+ 35.Kf2 Qxh2+ 36.Kf1 Rg1+ -++ After 34.-Rxe3 can follow 35.Qf2 Bxg2+ 36.Qxg2 Re1+ 37.Kf1 Qxg2+ 38.Kxg2 Rxa1 39.Kxh2 -++ |

Sep-26-19 | | TheBish: A Grosar vs Zsuzsa Polgar, 1991 Black to play (31...?) "Medium"
In a fantasy variation, I imagined 31...Qxh2+ 32. Kxh2 Rh4+ 33. Kg1 Rh1#. Of course this is ridiculous, as 31...Qxh2+?? is easily answered by 32. Rxh2. But this thought experiment quickly led me to the solution. 31...Bxg3! 32. hxg3
If the rook moves, 32...Bxh2+ is crushing, ripping open the white king's shelter. For example 32. Rg2 Bxh2+ 33. Kf1 (33. Rxh2 Rg4+ wins the rook with mate following soon enough) 33...Bf4 looks crushing. 32...Qh1+!!
Always look for double checks! You probably wouldn't sacrifice your bishop and not see this line, if you've ever seen the theme. After 32...Qxg3+ 33. Rg2 Qxe3+ 34. Qxe3 Rxe3 35. Rd2 Black is better, but there are lots of moves left to play. 33. Kxh1 Rh4+ 34. Kg1 Rh1#. |
|
Sep-26-19 | | Cheapo by the Dozen: Dumb puzzle, IMO. Each move is obvious, as Black builds a material advantage while keeping an attack. Fortunately, White's queen is too awkwardly placed for counterplay. |
|
Sep-26-19 | | Cheapo by the Dozen: Oh. I didn't even bother finding the potential 32 ... Qh1+ line, because 32 ... Qxg3+ is so strong. |
|
Sep-26-19 | | patzer2: I correctly picked 31...Bxg3! as the solution to today's Thursday puzzle. I didn't get the second move of the combination, but it doesn't matter as any reasonable follow-up wins. After 32. Rg2, best is 32...Bxh2+ -+ (mate-in-24 @ 35 ply, Stockfish 10). However, several other follow-up moves also win. My follow-up was 32...Be5 -+ (-14.30 @ 34 ply, Stockfish 10) which wins easy enough. P.S.: So where did White go wrong? The losing move appears to be 26. Ba5? allowing 26...Rxe4 -+ (-2.49 @ 27 ply, Stockfish 10). Instead, 26.Ba7 Bxe4 27.Rf2 Qxb2 ∓ (-1.03 @ 31 ply, Stockfish 10) gives White drawing chances in a pawn down middle game. Earlier, instead of 16. Be3 ⩲ (+0.56 @ 30 ply, Stockfish 10), White could have maintained a strong advantage with 16. Qd2 ± (+1.22 @ 33 ply, Stockfish 10). |

Sep-26-19 | | patzer2: White could not resist going for the Knight fork 21. Nc7 Bb7 ± (+0.74 @ 27 ply, Stockfish 10). However, it was more important for White to first improve the position and attack the Black castled King with 21. Be3 ± to +- (+1.80 @ 34 ply, Stockfish 10). |
