May-02-06  KeRvY: quite an easy find even for a tuesday,
May-02-06  Alekhinelover: even easier than monday's
May-02-06  CitricAcid13: Rxd6 it's a miracle!
May-02-06  aazqua: Ridiculously easy and an embarrassingly bad game. Can't we limit the puzzles to 1800+ rated games? This is worse that fischer vs grennblatt
May-02-06  Gregor Samsa Mendel: <aazqua>--If you are implying that Unzicker and/or Robatsch are rated below 1800, then you should look up the players and their ratings before you make such statements.

cu8sfan: Unzicker memorial week, how thoughtful. Thank you, <chessgames.com>.
May-02-06  n30: amazing. everybody adding a post here must be close to a gm/im level. 1800+... wow. very impressive. I for once didn't find this one (sic!) Despite the fact I found last sunday's puzzle within 30 secs easily. so, what does that mean?

...probably nothing. ;o)~

May-02-06  pwrstick: Maybe more of a Monday puzzle, but I enjoyed it. I suck at chess though :-)

It's funny, I didn't see it until I stopped looking at checks and started surveying which of white's pieces were threatened, and then I found it immediately.

May-02-06  alphee: <pwrstick:I didn't see it until I stopped looking at checks > and as I did not stop looking at checks ... I did not find it.
May-02-06  John Doe: The first move I looked at was Qf8 because it looked strong... of course there's that pesky knight and queen keeping me from mating.

At that point I realized rook takes knight got rid of both my problems.

Making the position you want come to be seems to be a common theme harped on by many chess books. Perhaps it's finally come to use...?

May-02-06  dzechiel: Very close to time control, black must have been very low on time to miss 39 Rxd6, it jumps right off of the board.
May-02-06  cuendillar: I too wanted to play 39.Qe8# and so made sure it was possible. The final line I came up with was 39.Rxd6 Qc8 40.Qe8+! Qxe8 41.Rxe8+ Kxe8 42.Rd8#
May-02-06  ianD: Feeels like Moday...too easy

Sneaky: The real combination started with 37.Ne7!, it's all forced from there.
May-02-06  Marco65: It's not easy to see when Robatsch did his final mistake. Moves 35-38 seems rather forced to me.

Notice how 37.Ne7 doesn't threaten to win only the exchange but a full rook, for instance (after 37...null move) 38.Nxg8 Rxg8 39.Qh6+ Rg7 40.Rxd6 or 38.Nxg8 Kxg8 39.Rxd6 Qxd6 40.Qxg5.

Maybe 37...R8g6 "only" loses the exchange but it's understandable that Robatsch hopes his opponent doens't find the winning continuation rather than entering a lost endgame

May-02-06  prinsallan: Very pretty.
May-02-06  EmperorAtahualpa: I agree with the many others who say this puzzle is too easy. This should have been Monday's puzzle. I saw it in 1-2 seconds.
May-02-06  AniamL: Free knight week!!!!
May-02-06  Habalabam: I think the puzzles SHOULD vary in difficulty.
Regrettably, I go to "puzzle mode" when I'm looking at puzzles. I mentally sacrifice here and there and I explore forced combinations 6-7 moves deep, which is not how I play chess games.

If you started standardizing chess puzzles even more, my blindspots would only increase. I could even vote for the "puzzle of the week" to have three (?) games. Most with a definite "best move", but only one with a killer combination.

I hope to see chessmaster in the future analyzing my games, and then recognizing problematic "themes" which it could generate puzzles from using the included game database.

May-02-06  TheKid: Nice to see chessgames making a tribute to Unzicker. He died April 20th.
May-02-06  NotABanker: Very easy for Tuesday, I thought Monday was harder.
May-02-06  pleasebequiet: Good lord. Stop with the comments about how easy the puzzles are. You come off as arrogant and obnoxious.

I am a better player than most of you. Since this is a fact, I am not arrogant or obnoxious like you. I am simply stating fact.

May-02-06  kErVy2: Come on now, I'm an idiot!
May-02-06  Zplane: I appreciate having this database of games to review and these daily puzzles. (Sometimes I even appreciate the comments made on the games) Thanks for the work picking out these puzzles for our enjoyment/education.
May-02-06  Fezzik: I agree with TheKid!

Thanks for selecting Unzicker's games this week!
