Chessical: A very impressive demolition of the Ruy Lopez, Classical (C64) by Smyslov. Randviir's mistake seems to be in selection of the opening variation itself, rather than a particular move, and Smyslov is relentless in his K-side attack.

The Classical Defence (3...Bc5) has proved difficult for even top players to handle succesfully:

Short vs Kamsky, 1994
E Jimenez Zerguera vs Fischer, 1960

<11.Ng5> Nxg5 12.Bxg5 Qe8 13.d6 Ng6 14.Re1 Nxe5 15.Bc4+ is also strong.

Black finds it difficult to organize counterplay aginst White's centre, especially in the face of the threat of the <d6> advance. Unfortunately, playing a preventative <11...d6!?> is not advisable 12.Nxe4 fxe4 13.Bxe4 dxe5 14.Nxe5 with advantage

<12.d6!> cuts Black's position in two, and he does not recover.

<13.Nc4!?> may be even stronger, 13... Nxd3 14.Nxb6 axb6 15.Qxd3 c6 16.Qb3+ Kh8 17.Ng5 winning

<17...h6> may have been a better defensive try 18.dxc7 Bxc7 19.Nxe4

<18.Nxh7> is an alternativce way of progressing the K-side attack 18... Nf3+ 19.gxf3 Kxh7 20.Bxe4+

<38.d7> Rd8 39.Re1 Bf7 40.Rxf7+ also wins

Jun-20-05  InspiredByMorphy: <Chessical> Very well put together post. I too play the Classical defense but think black should have played the Cordel gambit with 4. ...f5. Opening Explorer

<has proved difficult for even top players to handle succesfully:>

E Jimenez Zerguera vs Fischer, 1960

Fischer has no problems in that game.

However, I agree that the Classical variation favors white.

Chessical: <Montreal1666> I meant that Fischer could only obtain equality with the Classical Defence, and I believe that using an alternative set up he would have achieved more. I therefore blame the defence for Fischer's lack of success in this game.

It may be significant that the day earlier Fischer had his very unexpected loss Fischer vs C Munoz, 1960, so perhaps he regarded it as a drawing variation to be used when appropriate? Whatever the truth of the matter is, he apparently abandoned it after 1962, Tal vs Fischer, 1962. Evidence of a dissatisfaction with the variation's effectiveness?

Phony Benoni: You really have to admire the nobility of Black's DSB, giving up its freedom to join its crippled brother in miserable back rank Horrwitzery. They do limp back into action, only to fall victims to a windmilling rook on the rampage.
