Jun-20-12  M.Hassan: <sevenseaman: M.Hassan: A nice and expansive combination that thinks of many angles. Quite enjoyed running through it.>

What a nice positive comment as always.
Thank you and with great appreciations

Jun-20-12  bachbeet: I didn't get it because I didn't see that white needed to get his bishop out of his Q's way. Very nice! From the chess puzzles given here, it seems Tal never lost.
Jun-20-12  David2009: Tal vs R Mascarinas, 1981 White 28?

I spotted 28.Bc7 etc but not the best defence 28...Qe6! Here's a link to Crafty End Game Trainer http://www.chessvideos.tv/endgame-t... to explore the puzzle position above. Have fun finishing the robot off - if you get stuck (as I did!) consult <gofer>, <poszvald>, <LTJ> and <patzer2>'s excellent analyses for the way forward. <sevenseasman>: I recognise the feeling!

<gofer>: <The queen cannot move or black is dead and if the queen does move the the king is dead. Time to resign.> The EGT is not programmed to resign. Instead it finds resources defending when R for Q down, but the material deficit is too much.

Jun-20-12  Once: It's not often that you get to sacrifice the same bishop twice.
Jun-20-12  KingV93: Saw the vulnerabilities along the back rank and the gain in tempo by sacrificing the rook but missed the gain in tempo by moving the DSB out of the way by simply attacking and deflecting the queen. Excellent play and good puzzle!
Jun-20-12  BOSTER: This is the pos. black to play move 20...(they played ...h6).

click for larger view

How to play after 20...f5, the threat Nc3+ is always in the air, and white has no tempo to play Rxd5 (may be).

Jun-20-12  kevin86: The rook sac and queen mate must be set up by a bishop clearence sac...typical Tal,a sac to set up a sac.
Jun-20-12  Marmot PFL: White has a strong attack, but will lose most of that if g6 is captured, threatened by Rxg6. Rh8+ followed by Q+ is a typical attacking plan.

28 Bc7 Qxc7 29 Rh8+ Kxh8 30 Qh6+ leads to mate, but black does better to decline the bishop and play 28...Qe6 to interpose on g8. This is not too serious as long as white plays 29 Nd4 before Rh8+ (not after or Qe1+ would be nasty).

Jun-20-12  Once: <BOSTER> If 20...f5?, white crashes through with 21. gxh7+. Whether white recaptures on h7 or not, white is going to play Neg5 with a tremendous attack.

20...h6 is the best move ... as long as you realise that 21. Bxh6 is a bluff.

Jun-20-12  TheBish: Tal vs R Mascarinas, 1981

White to play (28.?) "Medium/Easy", Black is up an Exchange for a pawn. But what a pawn it is! The g6 pawn is very strong, helping to set up a mating attack. White's bishop is actually in the way of his queen, blocking access to h6. So...

28. Bc7! Qxc7

Anything else loses the queen or gets mated anyway.

29. Rh8+! Kxh8 30. Qh6+ Kg8 31. Qh7+ Kf8 32. Qh8#.

Jun-20-12  dragon player: First I was thinking about sacing the rook on h8, but the queen can't come in. Therefore you have to clear the way:

28.Bc7! Qxc7

Other queenmoves don't help either.

29.Rh8+ Kxh8
30.Qh6+ Kg8
31.Qh7+ Kf8
32.Qh8#

Time to check.

Yes, indeed.

Jun-20-12  Memethecat: 28.Bc7 & the only way for black to stop 29.Rh8+ Kxh8 30.Qh6+ Kg8 31.Qh7+ Kf8 32.Qh8# is to give up his Q.
Jun-20-12  BOSTER: <Once> <If 20...f5? ...white is going to play Neg5>.

After 20...f5 21. gxh7+ Kh8 22.Neg5 Nc3+ 23.Bxc3 bxc3 24.b3 Nc5. I don't think that white has the brilliant win.

To defend black pos. is not easy, but they has counter attack.

Thanks for your answer.

Jun-20-12  Once: <BOSTER> Let's just add one more move to your line with 25. h6 ...

White's kingside attack is much faster than anything black can do on thw queenside. Black is busted.

In this position, Fritz is giving white an advantage of +7.96.

Jun-20-12  RookFile: Let's play an opening against Tal where we move the queen 3 times and make 5 pawn moves by move 11, and find out what happens.
Jun-20-12  drnooo: just used the line elsewhere today but here it's nearly as good FAST AND FURIOUS
Jun-20-12  lzromeu: Amazing two rook's sac

AylerKupp: 19...0-0?????? on general principles. I don't know what's the maximum number of permitted ?'s, but only a madman castles into a Tal attack. You don't tug on Superman's cape.
Jun-20-12  King Death: <AylerKupp> In principle I agree but 19...0-0 wasn't a bad move objectively, just in a subjective way. The one thing I don't understand is how Black went for 19...0-0 20.g6 h6 if he was afraid of the obvious 21.Bh6. Black might have tried 19...Qa6 when Tal can go into an ending with a small advantage or play something like 20.Qe1 to keep things in the middle game. While 21. Bh6 shouldn't have gotten anywhere after the simple 21...gh, we got to see another nice Tal attack!
Jun-21-12  RookFile: Interesting observation.
In that position, black has an interesting tactical possibility of 19.... Nc3+, which at the moment doesn't work because of 20. Nxc3 bxc3 21. Bxc3.

So, you start thinking about ways to divert the e4 knight.

I have no idea - how would the game continue after 19.... Nc5?

19.... a4 also comes into consideration.

May-21-18  Senk: 28.Bc7!
May-27-20  carpovius: Tal... a man with thousand eyes))
