Kibitzer's Corner
Jul-12-21  Brenin: 39 Qxh7+ Kxf6 (Kf8 40 Qf8+ Ke7 41 Qg7 mate) 40 Be5+ Kg5 41 f4 mate.
Jul-12-21  Lambda: 39...Kf8 40. Qg8+ I assume you meant.

I chose 40. Bf4 there.

Jul-12-21  Brenin: Thanks, <Lambda>, I indeed meant 40 Qg8+ here. Your 40 Bf4 also works, with White having only suicidal moves such as Qd2 or Rd7 to delay Bh6 mate by a move or two.
Jul-12-21  drollere: 39. Qxh7+ Kxf6, 40. Be5+ Kg5, 41. h4+ Kg4, 42. f3#

retreat to the back rank, e.g. 39. .. Kf8, is mate in two.

Jul-12-21  mel gibson: A nice little beginners mate.
Jul-12-21  Walter Glattke: A) 39.Qxh7+ Kxf6 40.Be5+ Kg5 41.f4#
B) 39.Qxh7+ Kf8 40.Qg8+ Ke7 41.Qg7#
C) 39.Be5 Rh8 40.Nd7 wins
Jul-12-21  raymondhow: Sure is complex for a Monday. I found the right line, but for some reason wanted to play 41 h4+, followed by 42 f3#. Figure I still get credit for extended torture.
Jul-12-21  timeclimber: <raymondhow: Sure is complex for a Monday. I found the right line, but for some reason wanted to play 41 h4+, followed by 42 f3#. Figure I still get credit for extended torture.>

41.h4+, 42.Qxg6+ and then 43.g3# also works ;)

Jul-12-21  agb2002: White has a bishop and a knight for a rook and a pawn.

The black is defenseless: 39.Qxh7+ Kxf6 (39... Kf8 40.Qg8+ Ke7 41.Qg7#) 40.Be5+ Kg5 41.f4#.

Jul-12-21  Nullifidian: 39. ♕xh7+ ♔xf6 (♔f8 40. ♕g8+ ♔e7 41. ♕g7#) 40. ♗e5+ ♔g5 41. ♙f4#
Jul-12-21  Refused: 39.Qxh7+ Kxf6 40.Be5 Kg5 41.h4+ Kg4 42.Qxg6+ Kh4 43.Bf6#

was my pick. I found this more asthetically pleasing.

Jul-12-21  Cheapo by the Dozen: Tuesdayish in difficulty -- but I love Tuesdays. :D
Jul-12-21  Cellist: Another way to extend torture is to go 40.Bh4+ g5 41. Bxg5+ Kxg5 42. Qg7+ Kf4 43. Qg3+ Ke4 44. Qe3#

Jul-12-21  TheaN: Whoops, missed a faster mate. I seem to have something against the f-pawn :>. Spotted <39.Qxh7+ Kxf6 (Kf8 40.Qg8+ Ke7 41.Qg7#) 40.Be5+ Kg5> and at this point it's clear Black's not going to survive. <41.h4+?! (f4#) Kg4 42.Qxg7+?! (f3#) Kxh4 43.Bg3#>.

  chrisowen: Bo knight you no?
Jul-12-21  Damenlaeuferbauer: After long thinking, the incredible strong and creative Russian GM Ratmir Kholmov, who, despite being "brother in alcohol" (G. Sosonko) with M. Tal, won famous games against giants like P. Keres, B. Fischer, etc., finally found the mate in 3 moves with the very nice knight sacrifice 39.Qxh7+!,Kxf6 (39.-,Kf8 40.Qg8+,Ke7 41.Qg7#) 40.Be5+,Kg5 41.f4#.
Jul-12-21  YoungEd: Score a rare victory for the YoungEd express! Got it in an instant! :)
Jul-12-21  King.Arthur.Brazil: As <Cellist>, one can torture the Black King in another way: 39. ♕xh7+ ♔xf6 40. ♗e5+ ♔g5 41. ♗f4+ ♔xf4 42. ♕h6+ ♔e4 43. ♕e3#... lgs

Except for the fact that Black can repeat with 41...Kf6, and that after 42. Qh6+ comes 42...g5. But fortunately you would still have a win after 43. Qxe6, when Black can't meet the dual threats of Qe5# and Qe3#. Only delay the inevitable for two more moves by throwing his rook and queen on the e-file.

Be careful of trying to "torture", you might get burned! Which would be justice IMHO.
