Jun-28-08  ravel5184: This is in my introduction for Game Collection: 11 Miniature Games
Jul-01-08  0o0o0o0o0: To reach the completely devastating checkmate, black needs to hope that white captures with the knight and 'nae' the bishop. For white to do this, black is hoping that they are good enough to see the knight fork, over the obvious pawn stealing Bf7+. However, they also hope white is not good enough to know this trap.

So, it seems like a trap for a very particular player to me. Hope I get one!

Apr-22-09  JonathanJ: <tactic101> if white takes on f7 with the bishop, black plays Ke7 and either knight or bishop are lost.

tpstar: Unless anyone can identify Mr. Schilling, I am taking Bill Wall's reference as authoritative (link by <Hanada>) and calling this the Blackburne Shilling Gambit (aka Kostic Gambit).

That is a cute story behind the eponym. =)

GrahamClayton: This game was duplicated in A Jordan-N Banks, 1917. A Jordan was Alfred Jordan, one of the top checkers/draughts players of the time:

offramp: White must have been tearing his hair out in disappointment after this game.
Oct-17-13  erimiro1: <offramp> Why? He should be proud of himself! After all, formally, he was the first one to test (and to taste..) the trap.
Oct-17-13  Abdel Irada: From White's perspective, this was indeed a caustic gambit.

Oct-17-13  chessbug2: So happy to see my pun first thing on the morning!
Oct-17-13  Shamot: <chessbug2: So happy to see my pun first thing on the morning!>

Pardon my ignorance, but, what does it refer to?

Oct-17-13  HSOL: Shamot: I guess "Just my luck" or is there another pun from Game of the day "Just Muhlock"?
Oct-17-13  Shamot: HSOL: Thank you. I guess I was not paying attention to phonetics, and was expecting some reference to something like a song, movie or alike as is the case usually.

wow! :D

Oct-18-13  chessbug2: The pun is "Just my luck" as <HSOL> said and that Costic is saying "Just Muhlock" as he finished him in 7 moves.
Nov-18-15  Computer149: Nifyofine balimutoba takabwekeshepo ututeya ifyabupuba!!! kikikiki

Mar-10-18  Korora: Isn't this a variant on the (very risky if White doesn't take the bait) Oh [expletive] Trap?
