Jun-03-04  beenthere240: A powerful refutation of the Vienna game!

  tpstar: <beenthere240> Miniature, yes; refutation, no. The Vienna is solid and strong, whereas moves like 3 ... Qh4?! and 6 ... Nh6?! are begging to be punished. White gets a great game with 7. Nd5 Qd8 (7 ... Qg6? 8. Nh4 Qg4 9. Qxg4 & 10. Nxc7+) 8. Bg5 f6 (8 ... Qd7? 9. Bxh6 gxh6?? 10. Nf6+) 9. Bxh6 gxh6 10. Nh4 and Black is reeling (10 ... Be6 11. Qh5+ Bf7 12. Qxh6 Nd7 13. Qg7). White's first blunder was 6. d3?? which should have lost a piece to 6 ... Bg4 7. Nd5 Qxf3 8. Nxc7+ Kd8 and after the fireworks Black picks off the Na8. Then 7. Ng5?? was one of the worst moves on the board, an oversight losing immediately to mate on f2. But please don't let these mistakes justify Black's play.
Jan-05-05  beenthere240: In case, white plays 4. d3, black wins brilliantly with 4...Qxf2#!!!

Of course I'm just being silly. 4. Qe2 followed by 5. Nf3 and regular development are examples of the way to go-- as black plays when white tries to get the old Scholar's Mate. I was just reacting to this game which looks much better when you first see it on the opening explorer.

Bubo bubo: I wonder what was White's idea when playing 7.Ng5, in particular in view of Black's preemptive 6...Nh6.

perfidious: Black's third move, curiously enough, is a novelty hereabouts, though it helps bring about his opponent's early demise after a singular lack of circumspection.
