keypusher: It's like Black forgot he was playing a gambit.
Dec-07-18  ChessHigherCat: I wonder why Fischer didn't play 34. Ra7? What a boring game! Maybe there were a lot of players in the simul.
Dec-07-18  Count Wedgemore: <CHC: I wonder why Fischer didn't play 34. Ra7>

Well, Fischer's winning plan was clear and simple; just walk the king over to the queenside, and it is game over for black. But 34.Ra7 is also winning, of course.

Dec-07-18  ChessHigherCat: <CW> It's just disappointing to see such a boring game from the Greater Fisherman of Fish. That said, an American friend in Paris once told me that he had played a simul with Fischer and was really proud because he had set up a complicated trap based on a pawn sacrifice. Fischer looked at the position for about 30s, which was a really long time for him, and played something else instead of taking the pawn. As he was walking to the next board, my friend grunted "hrumph" or something and Fischer wheeled around and said "You think I couldn't take that lousy pawn?" and then demonstrated that he could have taken it and won in all the variations. "But this is even better!"
Dec-07-18  Count Wedgemore: Wow, great story, <CHC>.
