Jun-14-03  bishop: Capablanca's 29th is the move heard round the world.
Jun-21-03  kevin86: If instead,29...Qb1+? 30 Qf1 Rd1??? 31 Rc8+ and mate next!
Jul-03-03  drunknight II: umm what about 30 Rf8; now what am I missing?
Jul-03-03  thomaspaine: If 30 Rc2, then 30 ..Qb1+ and white loses the rook. If 30 Rc8, again Qb1+, and white loses the rook.
Jul-03-03  SEVEN: If 30.. Rc8 then 31. Qb1+ Qf1 32. QxQ+ KxQ 33.RxR
Aug-01-03  PVS: This game puts me in mind of the game mentioned briefly last night: E Z Adams vs Carlos Torre, 1920 As Dylan admonished: "Beware of lightning, it might strike!"
Aug-02-03  Sylvester: This is a way cool game. If 30. Qxb2, then 30…Rd1 mate. If 30. Rc2 then the queen is captured by 30…Qb1† 31. Qf1 Qxc2.
Aug-07-03  Harapu: White was trashed anyway ! Even instead 29. ..Qb2, Capablanca had moved 29. ..Qb1,he would win anyway
Aug-07-03  Calli: The win after 29...Qb1 30.Qf1 Qxa2 is thoretical and difficult. Capa knew that and saw the trap a number of moves back. Look at his moves 23 thru 26. He is moving the rook back and forth trying to lure Bernstein into the trap! Kind of funny actually. Poor Ossip takes the bait and Capa gets the easy win instead of sweating out a long one.
Jan-25-04  Dougy: Hmmm black has a mountain of back rank mates combined with a double attack.

If 30. Qe1 Qxc3 then if 31. Qxc3 Rd1+ 32. Qe1 Rxe1#

If 30. Qc2 Qa1+ 31. Qc1 Rd1+ 32. Qxd1 Qxd1#

If 30. Qd3 Qa1+ with mate soon to follow.

If 30. Rd3 Qc1+ (not 30... Qxe2?? Rxd8#) 31. Rd1 Rxd1+ 32 Qxd1 Qxd1# (otherwise 31. Qf1 Qxf1+ 32. Kxf1 Rxd3)

Jan-25-04  kevin86: I made a comment on this game a few days ago-thanks to chessgames for making it a game of the day! I hated to have been Bernstein, expecting to see 29 ♕b1??and instead getting 29...♕b2!!!.

I believe this to be high on the list of single move thrusts-and in the ballpark with Frank Marshall's gold piece move.

Jan-25-04  Catfriend: Can't Bernstein play simply 10.♗d3?
Looks safer!
Jan-25-04  student0440: What is wrong with 22. Rxc4?
Jan-25-04  Brian Watson: 22. Rxc4 Nc3
Jan-25-04  Bitzovich: I heard that this is the only game where the queen was sacrificed for nothing (material-wise), not even capturing a single pawn
Jan-25-04  Brian Watson: <Catfriend> This is just speculation: 10.Bd3 c5, and if 11.dc, then 11..Nxc5 forces exchange of knight for bishop. And if white doesn't play 11.dc, then black plays c4 with tempo, and can start pushing his queen side pawn majority forward.
Jan-25-04  Catfriend: I think white will be happy after 11..c4 to plant his bishop on b1 or c2, where it will never be molested but still will help the K-side attack.
Jan-25-04  GannonKnight: One of the great moves ever ... A bolt of lightning in a seemingly calm game.
Apr-14-04  metsajb: that was i sick move by capa to mate bernstein! one of my opponents once played a similar move in game four of the 2004 middle school nationals.
Apr-14-04  TrueFiendish: Then he's probably as good as Capa.
May-19-04  notyetagm: 29 ... Qb2!!
Jun-04-04  who: did anyone notice how capa was leading him on with his rook
Sep-06-04  lao tzu: wonder if Levenfish had Capa's 29...Qb2 in mind when he played 25...Qxc5 in Korchnoi vs Levenfish, 1953
Sep-07-04  Calli: "did anyone notice how capa was leading him on with his rook?"

Why yes, someone seems to have pointed it out previously in this very thread ;->

Sep-17-04  notsodeepthought: Capa's great final move must have been enough to @#$%* off Ossip (with no good puns available, I have to fall back on palyndromes).
