Apr-25-06  stradivarius17: Wow, this seems very much like a monday puzzle! Key to figuring it out is to find the queen sacrifice!!
Apr-25-06  Danpev: Pretty easy!! Nice though.

An Englishman: Good Evening: Does 25.Nc6 also work?
Apr-25-06  JustAFish: So... 24 ... Nd8 25 Ne6+ Qxe6 26. R1xd8+ Bxe8 27. Rxe8 Ke7 28 Rxh8 and white has a rook and two minor pieces for a queen. If ... Qxa2 white simply makes luft. Is there more?
Apr-25-06  soberknight: <JustAFish> Your variation works, but the "master-class" response to 24...Nd8 is 25 Nc6! Qf6 (other moves are no better) 26 Rxd8+ Bxd8 27 Rxd8+ Qxd8 28 Nxd8 and wins.
Apr-25-06  Calculoso: <JustAFish> I think the real threat is 25. Nc6 where black will have more difficulty meeting the multiple knight attacks (including on the queen and pinned knight) as well as the newly discovered R@d1 (I do not see any adequate defenses to this move).
Apr-25-06  Fezzik: I wonder if the theme of the Back-rank mate/attack will continue this week? I have a nice collection of games in my library but always like to add more.
Apr-25-06  Mattheus: I missed today's puzzle... I saw the Queen sacrifice but failed to see the significance of 25 Nc6! Instead I tried to swap the sequence of moves and looked to play 23 Nxe6 - but black's response of Qxe6 appears to squash white's attack.
Apr-25-06  prinsallan: Two in a row ^^ -both extraordinary simple-

LIFE Master AJ: 23.Qxc8+ is very simple.
(Now 23...BxQ/c8; 24.RxB/c8+.)

24...Nd8 is forced, otherwise White win more material. (24...Bd8?; 25.NxN/e6, and White will wind up with TWO rooks, and two minor pieces for the Queen, an overwhelming material advantage.) 25.Nc6 will either win the Black Queen or mate. (You don't really have to calculate too much in this one. White is winning a Rook and a Bishop for the Queen ... right off the bat. Further, Black is placed into a terrible pin, and White has more threats ... you almost could play a sacrifice like this just based on an elementary knowledge of tactics and the initiative.)

Have I missed anything?

Apr-25-06  Manu2: I got this one too. The Nc6 follow up will break the camel's back!!
Apr-25-06  Dudley: Better crank up Fritz to make sure! Or did you do that already?
Apr-25-06  eaglewing: <soberknight> You might get even better with 24...Nd8 25 Nc6! Qf6 and now 26 Bc5 renewing the mate threat 26... g6 27 Rxd8+ Kg7 28. Bd4 and only a lonely white rook and Ne2 should remain.
Apr-25-06  Soltari: Noticing 23.Qxc8+ isn't difficult, this puzzle is about finding 25.Nc6, which makes the combination winning. And yeah I solved it :P.
Apr-25-06  AlexandraThess: Easy one, found it while watching snooker on tv.
Apr-25-06  Georgie Dubb: This attempt to save a pawn with 9. ... Kf8 (instead of 9...bxc6 10.♕xc6+ ♗d7 11.♕xd5 was an eyesore and finally led to disaster ...
Apr-25-06  euripides: I think the move order 24...Nd8 25 Rxd8+ Bxd8 26 Nc6 also does the job.
Apr-25-06  United33: so the endgame is 1R,1N,1B vs 1Q and then 1Q is not enough to win the game
Apr-25-06  euripides: <united> White wins more material - see the posts by <soberknight> and <eaglewing>.
Apr-25-06  stanleys: Rather easy one - I will give some suggestions for tomorrow's puzzle later
Apr-25-06  TheUnkraut: Alternative: Qxz9 followed by the knightfork on s10
Apr-25-06  WarmasterKron: Fairly simple. The queen sac leapt out at me, but the follow-up required more thought.

<euripides> 25.Rxd8+ is not possible as the knight is still in the way.

Apr-25-06  euripides: <warmaster> White has a rook on c8, so Rxd8+ looks legal to me. It is true that my line would not allow <eagle>'s elegant finish.
Apr-25-06  Summum Malum: Elegant finish..
Apr-25-06  ChessPieceFace: i just got through looking at yesterdays puzzle again, so when i clicked on this one, the answer practically jumped into my lap! hooray for my best week ever! :)
