<Brown>,
The centralisation on move 13 is also very impressive.

keypusher: What a wonderful game! Thanks for letting me know about it, <GrahamClayton>.

Was it really Ernst Gruenfeld playing black? He died in 1962, never saw a game of his after the 1930s before.

Apr-14-10  TheFocus: Wasn't this another Gruenfeld, an Israeli player?
Nov-27-11  King Death: < TheFocus: Wasn't this another Gruenfeld, an Israeli player?>

That isn't likely. Yehuda Gruenfeld was just out of diapers then.

Nov-28-11  TheFocus: <King Death> You are right. Ernst lived until 1962.

fredthebear: There are some nice surprises in this active game.

What's the finish you ask? Black is in check and is forced to interpose 55...Rf8. He has no other legal move. 56.RxRf8+ KxRf8 is also forced for Black. Now White seizes control of the promotion square with 57.Kh7. Thereafter, the White g-pawn will march forward and queen on g8 protected by the White Kh7. The new White queen will easily be able to catch Black's passed h-pawn, then turn her attention to checkmate the lone Black king.

57.Kxh5?? would lead to a draw after 57...Kg7 blockades the passed g-pawn. The White king would never be able to get in front of his g-pawn to control the promotion square g8. The White king can protect his g-pawn from behind, but he cannot help it promote from behind.

This finish would be a good position to share with chess students. Capturing a free unit isn't always best! Timing is everything.
