Nov-22-10  Dr. Funkenstein: 26. Qxf8+ is a well calculated sacrifice that looks easy when you are clicking through moves, but must have been a bit nerve racking to calculate the quiet move Bxe7.

An Englishman: Good Evening: Whilst I respect Witt's attempt to match the imagination of Gerard Welling, I'm not sure that's possible, or if it is possible, I'm not sure it's a good idea.
Nov-22-10  rilkefan: Great self-referential pun. Aspires to and actually achieves the condition of wit.
Nov-22-10  Elsinore: It was a great Queen sacrifice, but was the point of 25. B6? Shouldn't black have moved his Queen back to his first rank, like 25 Qd8? I don't see what 25. B6 was protecting against.
Nov-22-10  rilkefan: I guess 25...b6 was to play 26...c5 to defend e7 and at least try to put a little pressure on the center. After 25...Qd8 I guess white just doubles rooks on the f file and eventually either wins the bishop or e7 or parks a pawn on f7 - pretty much whatever he wants since black has just no counterplay.

The move I liked was 25.d4 - I was expecting 25.Qxf8 immediately, but not dropping e5 is obviously much better.

Nov-22-10  Elsinore: <rilkefan> You're probably right, but it's suprising that black didn't see trouble when white lined up a mini Alekhines gun on the F-file. How about 25. Rf5? Black will lose a pawn, but he should have time to bring his other rook into the defense and put up some fight.

  Sastre: 25...Rf5 26.Rxf5 gxf5 27.Rg1 Bh6 28.Bxe7 is winning for White.
Nov-22-10  Morten: 25.-,Rf5 is probably no better or worse than other moves. Black's position is past repair. 26.Rxf5, gxf5.26.Rg1,Bh6.27.Bxe7 with Bf6+ coming next is terrible.
Nov-22-10  rilkefan: It looks to me like one needs to go back to 10...Ne8 instead of say ...c5 to save black's position, though the whole game from there is sort of played as a self-mate so it's a bit hard to tell.
Nov-22-10  belgradegambit: I don't know about the pun, seems like plagiarism P Chrz vs J Tuma, 2001
Nov-22-10  David2009: Playing through G Welling vs R Witt, 1984, I had the impression that Black simply over-estimated his attacking chances. Setting up the position at move 21 on Crafty End Game Trainer,

Welling vs Witt 1984, 21? http://www.chessvideos.tv/endgame-t... , after 21.f5 Rxh4 22.fxe6 the EGT finds 22...c5! 23.Qf2 Rh3! (threatening Qxe6) so 24.Qf7+ Kh8 25.d4 with strong threats, but the EGT finds 25... Qb5 to reach with White to play

Now 26.Rf2 fails to Qd3 threatening Qe4+, so 26.Bxc5 Qe2 27.Rf2 (27.Qf2? only invites 27...Rxe3) Qxe3 (threatening Qe4+) so 28.Qf4 Qxf4 29.Rxf4 to leave an ending where White has more activity but no clear win.

Nov-22-10  kevin86: a great king chase!
Nov-22-10  swr: 28...Kh6?? loses immediately, better would have been 28...Kg8 29. Bxe7 Qc8 30. Rf8+ Qxf8 31. Bxf8 Kxf8 32. Rc1 etc.

26. Qxf8+! is a really sweet move, needless to say.

Nov-22-10  tatarch: < swr: 28...Kh6?? loses immediately, better would have been 28...Kg8 29. Bxe7 Qc8 30. Rf8+ Qxf8 31. Bxf8 Kxf8 32. Rc1 etc.>

I had the same thought. What's the way to win in this line, after 32...c5?

Nov-22-10  DarthStapler: What's KNSB league?
Nov-22-10  Elsinore: <DarthStapler> I think it's a Dutch tournament.
Sep-27-18  Gejewe: KNSB stands for Royal Dutch Chess Federation so it was national league.
