Jul-20-05 | | Knight13: Ivanchuk played a 2000!? A player 700 points lower than him!? LOL. This is a cheap one for him.
He won it very easily.
That 27. Ra8!! is a nice finish off. |
Jul-20-05 | | Eatman: Well I guess 26. f6 was a nice finesse but I am pretty sure 26. Ra8 wins too :) |
Jul-20-05 | | Maroczy: So that's how you beat those lowly 2000 rated players! |
Jul-20-05 | | tldr3: <cade> sorry you are mistaken if Ivanchuck played 22.Ra8 black would just take it with the bishop on c6 |
Jul-22-05 | | Hidden Skillz: knight13 dont be surprised how many rating pts he was lower.. havent u seen the game where a GM loses to a 1700+ player? its somewhere here in the database dont remember the names tho.. |

 | | tpstar: I believe you mean M Fouts vs N Firman, 2003 although Black was apparently an IM at the time. Here are some other notable upsets based on rating differential: Karpov vs W Hartmann, 1983
Yusupov vs K Gentes, 1986
M Schmidt vs V Malakhatko, 2004
P Cramling vs Korchnoi, 1984
H Karner vs Karpov, 1972
J Shiber vs G Shahade, 2003 |
Jul-22-05 | | Hidden Skillz: tpstar indeed it was that game ^^ and a good one for the patzer.. |
Jul-22-05
 | | tpstar: <Hidden Skillz> Please change that to "a good one for the amateur" before I slap you silly. And would you all please stop bashing lower rated players just because we're lower rated!? Sheesh. |
Jul-22-05 | | Hidden Skillz: lol never bashed any lower rated players hmmmm? jokingly used the word patzer which makes sense comparing their ratings.. |
Jul-22-05
 | | tpstar: *slap*
No I don't, thank you very much, but I'm sorry if you were only joking. Yet I have never heard the P-word used in any friendly context on this site. And if Mr. Sladek ever checks his own games, I don't believe he would appreciate it either. You can play well but still lose. Especially against a 2700 GM. So let's accentuate the positive. =) |

Ac-cent-tchu-ate the positive
Ee-limm-mi-nate the negative
Latch on to the affirmative

 | | Honza Cervenka: My favourite upset is Van Wely vs G Fischdick, 2000 |
Jul-22-05 | | Hidden Skillz: heh tpstar maybe u dont know but id love to see many more upsets like these.. makes chess so much more interesting.. and if u think ima snob no im not =) |
Jul-23-05
 | | Honza Cervenka: Talking about great upsets I don't know how I could forget a game which I personally witnessed (it was played in a team match in which I also participated): A Lacina vs Navara, 2001 |
Jul-23-05 | | notyetagm: Ivanchuk wins with a nice <decoy/deflection into a knight fork> with 27 ♖a8! ♕xa8 28 ♘c7+ ♔d8 29 ♘xa8. |
Aug-05-05 | | Knight13: 23. Bxd5?? A BLUNDER! LOSING MOVE! 23... Ndf6 is better. |
Apr-18-06 | | blingice: So why was strutting the pawn up necessary? Why can't Ra8 come first? |
Apr-18-06 | | neilmcmurdo: blingice - it's just a flourish. Both win but 26. f6 is strictly better - all defences to the mate threat produce a situation that's worse for black after the Q for R exchange, than without 26. f6. |
Aug-01-06 | | islero: A good one: Morozevich (2595) - Ippolito (2280) 0-1 New York 1997 I assume that you can find the game (a Petrov) at www.chesslive.de |
Dec-02-07 | | Whitehat1963: Biggest upset in the entire database, in my opinion. |
Apr-09-08 | | Whitehat1963: So now I guess this was Ivanchuck's victory after all. Oh, well. |
Nov-20-16 | | Al2009: <Knight 13 + Hidden Skillz> Yes, there are MANY upsets in which lower rated players DESTROY GM, who were underrating them and silly believing to easily win. So, please, be RESPECTFUL toward ALL players, chess is teaching also HUMILITY. See for instance this game below, played in Italy in 2004, where the famous GM Igor Miladinovic is literally PULVERIZED in just 23 moves, in a regular tournament (it was NOT a simul!) by an “unknown” player (whose rating was at that time 639 points lower than that of Miladinovic), and admire the WONDERFUL Rook sac at move 21, forcing mate. Kindly, enclose this wonderful masterpiece in the games list, it is simply SHAMEFUL that nobody has done that yet, although several newspapers at that time mentioned this incredible loss by Igor Miladinovic and the wonderful game played by his unknown challenger

Jan-31-17 | | ColeTrane: <Al2009> very interesting you talk about respecting other chess players when one can read your comments on the wcc match between Carlsen and Karjakin page. Ever consider heeding your own advice? |
